January 13, 200718 yr Here is my question to the enquirer, why is the closing of a single retail buisness news? Channel 5 is just as bad, they announced the jewler closing. The BoRics in Blue ash closed recently, just down in the stripmall so did the happs memories and the halmark shop further down hunt road also closed. But does the media say there is a string of closings in Blue Ash, of course not. The anti-urban bias is astounding.
January 13, 200718 yr ^ LOL... Kendall I was thinking along those lines as well. When you look at the photos, it looks like McFaddens and it is also under the same management.
January 14, 200718 yr Is McFaddens in Cincy owned by different people then the Mcfaddens in Louisville? The website makes reference to McFadden's all over the country but neglects to mention Cincy
January 14, 200718 yr Author In this article in the City Discussion forum http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=3636.180, they mention that JeanRo's Bistro will be expanding next door shortly when The Lofts at Fountain Square get going. Good news!
January 15, 200718 yr ^I'm actually a little disapointed with JeanRo expanding. One of the bartenders there told me there were plans to make next door a wine bar, which would have been really cool. Then again the expansion might be to add a wine bar to Jean Ro's which would also be awsome. I just like wine bars... as long as I have a bus or cab to take home.

January 15, 200718 yr A little related ... http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/AB/20070115/NEWS01/3 01150031/ Oh my God ... I can't believe the Cincinnati Enquirer actually reported on a project that has come to a halt that is outside the city limits? This is the dawn of a new day. I guess if the paper does decided to become less biased then I will reactivate my membership with the Enquirer, until then it's going to take a lot more than this. On a side note - Hey Enquirer how about the new restaurants that were just announced to open the other day? Sully's Pub (Race and 7th), Jalepeno's (Elm and 7th) ... oh yeah that's right, you had to use that column space for Roger's Jewlers closing. Take care, and keep up the good journalism, Jane. Cincy-Rise ;) - Response: Thanks, Cincy-Rise. I sent those two new restaurant names to our business and restaurant writers. I don't know if they know about them or not. The hell they didn't know about them, they were in the Business Courier.
January 15, 200718 yr Gypsy Cafe is on Calhoun in the cluster of rowhouses before you get to the Urban Outfitters church. It's mostly just a hookah lounge with a few types of drinks, coffee, tea, etc but no food. The owner said they'll add some food soon but it wont be anything major.. It's a hole in the wall but its a nice place to chill and watch foreign films on the projector.

It's a hole in the wall but its a nice place to chill and watch foreign films on the projector. I saw this place last night when leaving work (Panera across the street). I thought that it had been there, but that somehow I had never seen it. I will say that it adds an interesting element at night to the Calhoun St. corridor. I walked past and saw people lounging on couches and enjoying their hookah. Its a cool addition imo.
January 16, 200718 yr I like it because its such a good grassroots example of creating "the third place" which is such an important element to a community. People criticize Panera and Starbucks to death, even I do to an extent but you can't really be mad at 'em. They're just capitalizing on what people in communities crave. Something comfortable, familiar and an excuse to get away from their job and home life. It's like those guys you always seen in barber shops that get their hair cut like every single week. They're not there because they need a hair cut, they do it to get away from their nagging families.

One of Panera's motto's/slogan's is "Panera is an everyday oasis for its customers"...pretty much sums up what you just said! ^Oh..and its great to see that the Enquirer finally picked up on a week old story!
January 16, 200718 yr Oh...and while I'm at it, just down the street from the new Gypsy Cafe, a Subway is opening in the existing Shell gas station. They are building onto the bldg to create space for the sandwich place...its looks as if it will have a separate entrance from the gas station, and will be on the Calhoun St side of the property.

January 17, 200718 yr At least the Enquirer made mention of this, but it is interesting to compare their article to what the Post wrote. January 17, 200718 yr Well the Post has typically been known as a more liberal (than the enquirer) newspaper...I'm guessing thats why the enquirer is going to let it go under once their contract runs up for the printing press that the enquirer owns. :|

January 19, 200718 yr On my way home today...I noticed a new Mexican restaurant opening along Harrison Ave. (next to the old E-check) in Green Twp.!!!!! I couldn't be more excited...Mexican restaurants are sorely lacking on the westside and even the city as a whole....I will welcome any other Mexican restaurants with open arms!!!
January 19, 200718 yr Why, there are Taco Bells all over the city! In fact, with a new one planned at Highland and McMillan!

January 20, 200718 yr "Our vision - we're going for an older crowd, 25 and up," said Grammas. Oh for crying out loud! That's an older crowd? I guess that puts me at senior citizen status!

January 24, 200718 yr Best of luck to them...I definitely look forward to seeing the whole Greenup area really take off!
January 26, 200718 yr Not a new place, but Chamber's Restaurant on Court St. has extended their hours. They are now open from 6:30 AM - 8:00 PM, Monday through Friday. :) I noticed the sign in their window about their new hours, so my husband and I tried them out tonight. They have hot sandwiches, burgers, salads, and appetizers. Inexpensive, too. Our bill was less than $15. They have a bar, too, with happy hour from 4-8. They told us that they are trying the expanded hours for the locals. They are located at 125 E Court St, in between Walnut and Main.
January 26, 200718 yr ^ There was a new sign/flyer in our lobby today with the Chamber's extended hours. It also said they also deliver!
January 26, 200718 yr Just finished dinner at Pho Paris, and WOW!!! Just stellar food...we got four appetizers for the four of us, then split two entre's, and everything was just astonishingly tasty...they don't have their liquor license yet, so we're sitting in Coco's for a nightcap...
January 29, 200718 yr Northside's Potluck becomes restaurant POLLY CAMPBELL | [email protected] December 14, 2006 CINCINNATI - Potluck in Northside has transformed into The Hideaway. We ate here Saturday night..it was awesome I would advise anyone interested in a good meal to check this place out. They don't have a liq license so you can BYOB or pick something up at the Northside Tavern.
January 29, 200718 yr ^That just shows the effectiveness of limiting the amount of liqour licenses. That law is limiting the amount of places where regulated liquor sales can occur, and dampering the sales of businesses who wish to profit from the sales of alcohol...makes a lot of sense huh...
January 30, 200718 yr Well NKY has 80% of all of Kentucky's liquor licenses. ;) Ohioans know that you only go to NKY for Hofbrauhaus, Cheap Liquor and the view of Cincinnati.
January 30, 200718 yr Well NKY has 80% of all of Kentucky's liquor licenses. ;) Ohioans know that you only go to NKY for Hofbrauhaus, Cheap Liquor and the view of Cincinnati. ...and Riverside Korean and now Pho Paris - and to smoke at dinner or in a bar!
January 30, 200718 yr ^I can understand smoking at a bar, but doesn't smoking at dinner make your food taste like smoke?
January 30, 200718 yr Well, you don't take a bite, take a drag, take a bite, take a drag...that would definitely suck...the only time one does that is when you've got a really short lunch break! But there are few things as wonderful as sitting down, putting in your drink order, then lighting up and being on your second drag when the bourbon/rocks arrives; going a round with a few appetizers, then hitting the booze and another smoke before the entree's arrive; and then a cigarette with a cup of coffee after dinner... I say this as a former smoker - I quit (for the second time) at the end of June...I'm very happy I don't smoke anymore, but man, do I miss smoking over dinner...
January 30, 200718 yr ^Well in regards to the smoking in restaurants issue: If the restaurant is actually preparing the food fresh and/or baking their products in house...then the smoke inside the building jeopardizes the foods quality. I know at Panera that is the main reason why their restaurants have been smoke free...Panera does all the baking in house and does not want the smoke to take away from the quality of their final product.
January 30, 200718 yr ^I can understand smoking at a bar, but doesn't smoking at dinner make your food taste like smoke? Isn't smoky flavoring a desireable attribute with barbecue ?
