I haven't seen a single news article about this place, and they don't seem to have any social media...but apparently there's a second Cincinnati chili parlor in OTR now?

That's where the old smores place used to be of I'm not mistaken.

Hopefully this place can survive until the pandemic is over.

Would be a hit with the late night bar crowd, if we had late night bars.

Apparently the same family that runs the Philly cheese steak window on 13th street across from Longfellow also owns this place.

Makes sense since the Philly cheese steak place didn't have a social media presence either. The family is super old school from what I understand.

Apperantly the food for lucky dog is also equally solid and fairly priced. I have yet to check it out though.

It looks like Social OTR is now Elm St. Social Club. Does anyone know if it's just a rebranding/new concept for the same restaurant, or did the ownership change?

Wasn't the idea of that space to be an incubator for restaurants, similar to the Findlay Kitchen? I thought the model was for each concept to open for 9 months before moving on tho their own space. https://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2019/03/29/findlay-market-seeksfood-entrepreneurs-to-fill-its.html

I knew Social OTR was supposed to be a training ground for people to get into the restaurant business, but I didn't realize the space itself was supposed to turn over every 9 months. Interesting concept.

Update on the Social OTR space. Apparently Elm Street Social Club is built on nostalgia for the 90's:

Cincinnati chef opens nostalgic restaurant in Over-the-Rhine: PHOTOS

A nostalgic '80s- and '90s-themed restaurant that's hearkens back to big-city bodegas and delis of those decades has opened in a shuttered restaurant space adjacent to Findlay Market.

Chef Jordan Anthony-Brown, who is opening the Aperture in Walnut Hills, opened the Elm St. Social Club at 1819 Elm St. across from Findlay Market. The restaurant held a soft opening the week of Oct. 19. Flip through the photos above for a preview.

I have recently been getting ads for Danny Boy Burger, a "retro-style burger joint that specializes in hamburgers, cheeseburgers, Impossible burgers, and golden fries." Their website and social media have a pictures of the food and links to order via DoorDash, but no photos of a restaurant and no address. After doing some digging, it looks like this is a delivery-only 4EG concept, and I suspect they're fulfilling the orders from their Keystone kitchens.

This is similar to Thunderdome's new Mason location for The Eagle, which is a "ghost kitchen" — they are actually cooking the food in the kitchen of Maplewood and offering it for carry out or delivery, but have no plans to open a dining room.

It is interesting to see local restauranteurs getting into this business model. It's a great way for them to do more business during the pandemic and not have to worry about the risks of having a dining room right now.

This idea has been catching on in bigger cities for awhile now, even before the pandemic. Former Uber CEO Travis Kalanick launched a business in 2019 that creates these ghost kitchens, and of course, Chuck E Cheese got "caught" a few months ago selling food on Grubhub using the name Pasqually's Pizza & Wings.

What's strange to me is that 4EG appears to be trying to hide the ghost kitchen status while Thunderdome is being open and up front about it. I think that over time, there will be less of a stigma against restaurants that aren't "real" restaurants selling food for delivery and companies won't try to hide it as much.

Yes, even more '50s! Even with no dining room, it's still the '50s!

Clustertruck https://www.clustertruck.com was very close to opening a ghost kitchen in OTR in 2016. I worked on the project and we were even into building permits before they pulled out.

In this case I would guess it is because Thunderdome's restaurants have a fairly strong brand when it comes to food. 4EG not so much. Maplewood cooking up some Eagle fried chicken on the side - great. Keystone making burgers - meh.

D*** move by 3CDC:

Quote

3CDC moves to evict upscale OTR restaurant

The Cincinnati Center City Development Corp. (3CDC) has moved to evict an Over-the-Rhine restaurant that has remained largely closed for the duration of the coronavirus pandemic.

The developer filed a complaint for eviction on Nov. 16 against 1324 Vine LLC, the owner of the Mercer OTR restaurant in Over-the-Rhine.

Adam Gelter, executive vice president of development for 3CDC, told me the dispute with the owners of the Mercer was not a rent payment issue, but rather that they have not made any plans to reopen despite having the ability to do so since May.

3CDC doesn't get a cut of profits when a restaurant isn't open. So despite a restaurant doing what is morally responsible - and financially right for them, they are being forced out. Really bad look
