Agreed...why is it that people can't get used to calling the area Uptown.  I understand that lehman cannot grasp the idea of different neighborhoods, but then at least call it by an area name....Uptown.

^ Don't you mean Midtown?  I am not aware of any area in Cincinnati branded, "Uptown".

It's definitely uptown.. There's signage refering to it as uptown and the uptown consortium serves CUF, and even into Avondale and East Walnut Hills.

It would be nice if it were better known as that, instead of just "Clifton". The only people that I've heard refer to it as uptown are people that have disproportionately high knowledge of the city.

I was talking to my friend about Andy's Mediterranean Grill and another person in the room asked where it's located and my friend replied, "Clifton".

sweet mother of god.

Andys blows. I hate the people that work there. It was like 8pm, we stepped inside and I got IDed by Mr. Hard-ass before I could even sit down to order my meal. The food isn't good for how expensive it is and there's a 20 dollar per person minimum to get a hookah. It's not even in the cool part of Mt. Adams. It's technically in Walnut Hills.

Andy's...Booo...Miami-Oxford grads rejoice.

Mejana, though *thumbs up*

^the food is very tasty.  the hummus, taboouli (sic), baba ganoush (sic) and lamack (sic) with pita bread appetizer is very good, but expensive ($10).  Also I don't know how to spell mediterrianian food.

It's not even in the cool part of Mt. Adams.

Dude, who on earth said it was in Mt. Adams?  The ads on the radio say it's in Eden Park, which isn't more than a block off of reality, but I've never heard anyone think it was in Mt. Adams.

And I agree that the food is pricey, but let's not leave the impression that it isn't good.  It is phenomenal food - but you'll pay $16 for an entree, even if it's just a kebab and rice, and $12 for a sampler platter that gives you a quarter cup each of hummus, tabouli and babaghanoush (EDIT: Thanks to thomasbw, with a more accurate description of both the sampler and its price!).  Though it comes with homemade pita bread, which is exceptionally good...

And come on, Mejana is expensive for what you get too.  The only difference is that they have the buffet, which is awfully tasty - but if you order off the menu, it's in the same class as Andy's.  That's one thing I've never understood - how what developed as 2nd and 3rd world staple foods can be so damn expensive...I've yet to find a cheap Mediterranean place...gotta make the stuff myself...

And furthermore:

It's not even in the cool part of Mt. Adams.

Walnut Hills is a phenomenally cool area, with a great housing stock, Eden Park, a historic business district, lots of great infill, phenomenal access to downtown, and a far more diverse population than Mt. Adams could dream of.  For my money, Daveed's isn't even in the cool part of Walnut Hills.

the second streetcar line out of downtown needs to hit peeble's corner, that area would just explode.

Wow if I thought people were going to take my "review" with anything more than a grain of salt then I wouldn't have said that. I thought it was obvious I was being a little extreme. Andys has good food, I enjoyed my kebob and rice, but I hated the atmosphere which was definitely mt. adams-esque, except worse and atmosphere is 50 percent of the reason I go anywhere but I'm weird like that when it comes to restaurants, coffee shops, clubs, etc.

Mejana's buffet is really good and also cheap. I believe its somewhere around 10 bucks, and on certain days you would get a free hookah with the buffet. Im sure those days are gone with the smoking ban though.

Sad; WH along McMillan was at one time the second most bustling neighborhood to downtown.

I agree completely.  Andy's serves pretty much the same things that you find in very cheap Mediterranean places in most cities.  I do enjoy their food and the atmosphere's a bit more upscale, but I've never understood how they can charge what they do.  $12 or so for falafel is a little ridiculous IMO.

I am aware of the nasty signage from the 1970's that needs to be replaced but if that is considered "Uptown", what the hell is Midtown?  Surely it isn't Over-the-Rhine...

You can still get a hookah at the tables outside in front of Mejana

A few weekends ago a friend and I tried to hookah at Mejana and were told they weren't allowing smoking, so we went up to Andy's and just got hookah and some baklavah.  No 20$ minimum and the environment was cool, imo.

I have NEVER heard the term of 'Midtown' used for anyplace in Cincinnati.  I would assume that they use Uptown as a recognition that the area is 'up' on the hill from downtown.  In addition to the crappy signage that says Uptown...bus routes also designate the area as Uptown.

So the downtown/uptown designations in Cincinnati do not necessarily refer to southern most/northern most/midground.  But rather more so for elevation in the city.

the term midtown, at least in office leasing circles is the area on I-71 around rookwood/Norwood.

Uptown is Mt Auburn, CUF, Corryville, Clifton and Avondale. (maybe I missed one)

Yeah, never heard of Midtown but Rookwood is the center of the city, population wise (not geographically). Hence "Center of Cincinnati" being like one exit up but I've worked there and I've never heard of Rookwood or anywhere near it being refered to as "midtown". :-/

Wow..there was definitely a 20 dollar minimum for us. I got the impression we were just percieved as the group of obnoxious college kids coming in that were probably going to stay in there all night and not tip. Maybe I'd have a better experience there if I went again.

Nice! I saw the tables out there...didn't know they allowed that though.

BTW, something I had for the first time at Andy's was Pama, a pomegranate liqueur...absolutely phenemonal.  There's such an explosion of flavor...that unique mix of sour and sweet and fruity and yet not frou-frou...mmm.  I had it straight, bought a bottle myself at the Party Source, and that's gotten mixed in cosmo's and consumed up and on the rocks...mmm...

Love Roosters!  Wings are 10 times better than BW3 or Willey's.  How about one downtown?

Looks like a new restaurant is coming to Oakley called HUGO ...I didn't see it mentioned yet in this thread.

Welcome to Hugo, where our southern sophisticated cuisine blends the traditions of the low country with metropolitan twists. We will be opening our doors May 12th, 2007."

It looks like it is on the same level as Boca... http://www.hugo-restaurant.com/Home_Page.html

De Cavel plans restaurant in 'Gateway Quarter'

By Joe Wessels

Post contributor

Cincinnati restaurateur Jean-Robert de Cavel plans to open a new restaurant late this year or early next in the city's Over-the-Rhine neighborhood, joining a growing group of business owners giving the troubled neighborhood a chance.

The owner of popular downtown restaurants JeanRo Bistro and Jean-Robert at Pigall's said he plans to open a café akin to his Greenup Café, near the foot of the Suspension Bridge in Covington's Licking Riverside neighborhood.

Thats great...awesome to hear the news about de Cavel!!

Yeah, I'm sure we'll have to go a couple rounds with that menu!

I strongly suggest Indigo on Hyde Park Square (not just because I work there and you'd have the chance to experience my presence). It's a little expensive but eating outside on the patio is fun and the food is EXCELLENT. It's mostly Italian food; they're known for their pastas. :]

I can't wait for BW3s on Calhoun...urghh hurry up. I want some boneless mild wings.

I should try that Indigo again...used to go to the one in Ft. Mitchell every week for trivia when a friend worked there, but since he's not there, we've laid off...and I had three or four bad experiences at the one in Hyde Park (a former girlfriend loved the place, which kept us going back, but they always made me feel utterly unnecessary and unwelcome)...but that's been eight years now - I should try it again.

And if it's like the Ft. Mitchell one, it's really not very expensive - probably cheaper than Teller's, and better food...their pastas are definitely good, and their wood-fired pizzas and calzones are in the same league as Pomodori's - maybe one a notch down, but not a big notch...

I really like Indigo on Hyde Park Square.  I don't think it's really expensive, though.  You can easily eat a meal for less than $10.

It's expensive for the stuff I like : D

^Then you should just go on half-price wine night!

I like Indigo, but they are no Pomi's!

DOWNTOWN - The former Uno's Pizzeria on Walnut Street downtown is the top potential location for a new restaurant and nightclub that may be developed by restaurateur Jeff Ruby and funk musician Bootsy Collins.

great location

Great idea and location!  I wonder what the prices will be like.

^ That's awesome.

I did eat at the Precinct on Sturday and while service was excellent, I wasn't as impressed with my lobster this trip. Oh well . . .

Oh, and Indigo is a favorite of mine as well.

I'm really excited for this to happen...seems like just the type of thing that downtown has been in need of for some time (obviously I'm meaning in terms of entertainment aspects...not living necessities).

Collins, Ruby look at former Uno's for nightclub

Cincinnati Business Courier - 3:37 PM EDT Tuesday, April 3, 2007by Dan Monk and Lisa Biank FasigSenior Staff Reporter, Staff Reporter

Cincinnati celebrities Bootsy Collins and Jeff Ruby are teaming up on a new nightclub that would feature live entertainment, dining and Cincinnati music memorabilia.

The idea has been percolating for months, but went public Tuesday as Cincinnati City Councilman John Cranley submitted a motion for city administrators to "collaborate with the Bootsy Ruby architects and designers to fully realize the excitement of their vision."

^neat.  I was just going by that empty space wondering why it sat empty.

BTW, I hear Paula's on 4th will be closing.  Or at least Paula will be leaving the operation.

That is too bad.  I wonder why?  It certainly can't be for lack of business.

^personality conflicts with the partners in the deal I think.

Not a big deal, but I also noticed that KFC in Over-the-Rhine was shuttered, and I checked the records and KFC still owns the property.  It was always an eyesore, but I have not heard if it is going to be re-opened or sold.

That's too bad.  :(  I was disappointed when the Findlay Market location closed.

That doesn't really surprise me a whole lot.  Every time I drove past it, it was always empty.  I wondered how they stayed in business.

Bootsy, Ruby going into the club business

By Rick Bird

Post staff reporter

A new restaurant venture teaming Jeff Ruby and funk musician Bootsy Collins could bring a Hard Rock Café-style nightclub/restaurant with a local music twist to a key downtown block that city officials have hoped would emerge as the city's core entertainment district.

Ruby, a high-profile restaurateur and Collins, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, are partnering to open what they're tentatively called Bootsy Ruby's in the former Uno's restaurant on Walnut Street across from the Aronoff Center between Sixth and Seventh streets.
