Greater Cincinnati restaurant featured on Food Network reopening after expansion

A Greater Cincinnati restaurant that was featured on the Food Network's "Ginormous Food" has set a reopening date after expanding its dining room due to customer demand.

Bard's Burgers & Chili at 3620 Decoursey Ave. in Covington is reopening on June 26. It has been closed since May 23 as the dining room expands from 40 seats to 68, along with the addition of a new bar and a waiting area.

"On the weekends and sometimes during lunch we'd have to turn people away," owner Jordan Stephenson told me. "There's nowhere for people to wait, so I wanted to add a little bit of seating and a comfortable area to have a beverage or a beer."

Shake Shack has announced it's opening in both Columbus and Cleveland, so I have a feeling Cincinnati won't be far behind. Strangely, Lexington, KY has also had a SS for a few years at this point, too.

Cbus' is going to Easton, and Cleveland's is going to a suburban shopping center, too. I'd love to see Shake Shack open a location downtown (maybe at the Banks?), and they are one chain I wouldn't mind seeing in OTR either. Assuming Cincy gets one, it will probably land in Rookwood or Kenwood if the nearby locations are any indication, though. Some food for thought.

^ Hopefully Cincinnati holds out as long as possible. There are probably 50 places in town currently to get a better burger, but they don't have the hype. Without the mystique of Madison Square Park, Shake Shack is just an expensive fast food burger. I had one out on Long Island once shortly after they decided to become a chain and remember regretting having not gone to a Five Guys or something. It gets talked up like In-N-Out, but it's not as good and has double the price point.

I wonder if one would open up at Summit Park in Blue Ash? Hopefully it won't get dumped at Liberty Center. Wait, actually, dump it at Liberty Center... that's closer to Dayton!

I agree that it's nothing really special, but I think it's a solid spot for burgers and fries. I definitely like it better than In-N-Out (blasphemy in CA, but I really don't get the hype) and even 5 Guys which feels greasier and more 'fast food' than Shake Shack. It's like a better quality Johnny Rockets without the 50s nostalgia.

You know, I can so see them opening at Liberty Center. It's weird that the only 'Cincinnati' location of North Star Cafe is at Liberty Center. Talk about a great fit for OTR...they could do a carbon copy of their Short North location and probably make a killing.

There’s the spot in Rookwood where the W.G restaurant was. That could be a decent location even though I would prefer it be in OtR. Not sure how Walburgers would fair to it if they had one opening downtown.

I made the mistake a couple months ago of mentioning in the Cleveland threads that Cleveland UO posters (and I'm a Clevelander, so this isn't intra-Ohio city bashing) were only excited about Shake Shack because it made them feel validated as Clevelanders, and that SS is completely mediocre.  I experienced a furious and defensive UO backlash, lol.  Seriously though, SS is overpriced and not very good.

People in the Cleveland retail and restaurant threads are very touchy and protective/proud about getting the first-in-Ohio of any retail/restaurant establishments because the said same people are the one's who take Cleveland's lack of an IKEA as a personal insult that keeps them up at night feeding their inferiority complex.  Darn you Cincinnati and Columbus for having an IKEA! ;)

What would we ever do without our IKEAs... have a lower divorce rate?

I've pointed out before that Dayton has 3 IKEAs that are all closer to Dayton than either of the two IKEAs within driving distance of Cleveland. I got ignored by the Clevelanders.

I’m sure you weren’t ignored; the other Clevelanders were too upset to reply;)

A popular Northside restaurant and bistro concept that focused on craft cocktails, wines and seasonal dishes is no longer in business.

Bistro Grace, owned and operated by Suzanne McGarry, closed its doors on May 31. An employee answering the phone at the Hamilton, McGarry's other Northside restaurant, confirmed the closure.

Here's when downtown's newest gastropub and bakery opens

Downtown's newest gastropub, with an attached bakery window, is opening this week.

Crown Republic Gastropub, at 720 Sycamore St. on the ground floor of the Eighth and Sycamore development, is hosting its grand opening on Wednesday, June 20, but Cincinnati can get a tasty preview starting today: the attached bakery window housing Fat Ben's Bakery is already open and serving up pastries and breakfast items.

Peek inside the Banks' newest restaurant

A new Nashville hot-chicken restaurant will open Wednesday at the Banks. It's the second location in Greater Cincinnati for Louisville-based Joella’s Hot Chicken.

The 30-year-old style of chicken has six different degrees of heat depending on what the customer wants.

I've tried Aladdin twice. They keep it freezing cold in there and they can't make a decent salad.  Nice space, plenty of seating, but don't think the quality is high enough considering the competition in OTR.

I don’t think alladin is trying to compete with the other vine st resturaunts tbh...

Maybe it's owed by Yum! or White Castle... that would explain why it's freezing inside.

My girlfriend and I have eaten there probably 3 or 4 times since they opened and have had good experiences. To us, it is not competition with Vine Street, it is a basic neighborhood restaurant where we can get a quick, healthy, inexpensive meal on a weeknight, which is not something that most of the Vine Street restaurants excel at. We would eat at The Royal a lot more (their grain bowls are great) but they are currently only open for weekday lunches, plus late night weekend hours to serve the bar crowds. (In other words, they are not open for weeknight dinners or weekend lunches.)

Don't they have a nicely shaded patio out back? Seems like that is a good option if the air conditioned inside is too cold.

How long are they closing for?

EDIT: on their website it states they will be closing for July 1-9. Reopening July 10 at 6am.

Is it closing when he retires? I haven't been there in awhile but it's always ranked pretty highly on my list of lunch buffets. I'll have to remember to swing by again.

Speaking of Vine Street restaurants, I recently ate at Bakersfield and noticed that they no longer give you free salsa at the table. You can either order chips & salsa for $4, or order chips & guac for $6 and add salsa for an additional $1. It also comes in a bowl now instead of bottles, which I liked because it made it easy to add squeeze of salsa onto your tacos if you wanted a little extra spice. Yes, I realize making this complaint makes me sound like Dusty Rhodes, but it seems odd that an already somewhat expensive restaurant needs to gouge each table for a few extra dollars.

Yep, they were looking for buyers if anyone wanted to keep it going but not sure they found any. https://www.facebook.com/IsadoresPizzeria/

Eh, it's just like restaurants charging for bread, I think. It seems like a small cost, but I'm sure it adds up. At places like Nada or Bakersfield I would expect to pay for chips and salsa. The cheaper, family owned places (which unfortunately seem to mostly locate in strip malls for some reason) are the places I expect free chips and salsa at. Places like that spot in Hyde Park Plaza, or maybe even the place on Vine and 8th...blanking on the name.

Walnut and 8th is Taqueria Mercado #3, and they do charge for chips and salsa.

They got rid of the squeeze bottles of salsa altogether? That is a downgrade.

You guys sound like the Wednesday night church crowd at Frisch's.

Holtman's Donuts coming to Oakley

mapholtmansoakley*750xx.jpg

A Cincinnati favorite is opening its fifth location in one of Cincinnati's hottest neighborhoods.

Holtman's Donuts has signed a lease to open a donut bakery at 3450 Madison Road in Oakley with the goal of being opened by the middle of 2019.

Katie Willing, who owns that location with her husband, Danny Plazarin, along with the bakery's Over-the-Rhine and West Chester spots said they had looked at Oakley before opening in West Chester in 2016 at the Streets of West Chester but hadn't found the right spot until now.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

^The article doesn't specify... but I guess this will be new construction on parking lot surrounding the Crossroads Annex? According to the auditors site, there is a new parcel that was just created at 3450 Madison, and in June was sold to "Dragonfly Real Property Investments LLC", mailing address at 8600 Governors Hill Dr, Suite 160. Another bit of the parking lot (closer to the railroad tracks) was also parceled off, sold to "OAKLEY CHILD CARE III LLC", also with street address 3450 Madison, also with mailing address at 8600 Governors Hill Dr, Suite 160. The larger parcel sold in June for $2.6m and the smaller parcel sold in May for $1.9m. The land use for both parcels is still marked as "685 - Public Worship".

Yes i believe that is the case - they already ripped up the parking lot in that area as of yesterday.

Pretty weak that Crossroads got that land at a discount because they're a "church" but then they can go and sell it for market value.  But that's a discussion for another thread.

Par for the course in Oakley. Sad!

Crossroads is a giant scam.

what is the plan for the other side where the canes is? They are well underway there.

Not totally sure which parcel you're talking about, but a gym (Crunch Fitness) is going in at the corner of Ibsen and Ridge.
