I love the Business Courier, but they are really having a field day with this Terry's Turf Club drama. They probably published a dozen articles about Terry's comments and the restaurant closing, being sold, and reopening with new ownership.

^ I know, who cares.  Geesh

Plenty of chatter in Columbus media about the place as well

Yeah it's making me feel like I'm the only person who's never eaten there. Is it more of a Cincinnati institution than I realize? I would understand this level of coverage for someone like like Jeff Ruby, but I never knew who this person was until these stories.

I don't think many people knew who Terry actually was (obviously some did), but Terry's Turf Club has definitely been a Cincinnati Institution. I've never been there either, though. I've heard it's overrated and expensive.

Also, there is plenty of onion to peel back with Jeff Ruby, from what I've heard.

Never been to his restaurants either.

I don't know that it's an institution in the way that Jeff Ruby restaurants or Montgomery Inn are, but it certainly has been a popular restaurant since they were featured on Food Network a few years ago. For awhile it was a multi-hour wait to get in.

I enjoyed Terry's Turf Club, and they did make an excellent burger. I wasn't a huge fan of the whole experience, though. You often had to wait, and the service was usually kind of rushed and rude, and they bring the food out on paper plates. I'm not a snob, but if I'm paying a pretty steep price for a burger and fries, I don't want to eat off a paper plate. Their toppings and sauces were legit, and the burgers were thick and large. A good option on the East Side, but I agree it's a bit over hyped.

The servers were probably in a bad mood from having their butt grabbed 5 seconds before. And the dishwasher was on strike for the same thing

Is it me or have Montgomery Inn really fallen off the past few years?

Terry's is getting all the coverage because it was on TV. I've been there twice. It's nice. The burgers are good and all the signs are fun. Zips is better though.

Restaurants are often extremely toxic work environments.  A small group of 7-8 employees usually bullies the rest of the staff.  They hire their drug buddies and they're promoted to manager after four shifts.

You are not alone, but the Gregory family is just clueless, case in point, sat next to Ted Gregory's daughter in law on a flight to Cincinnati while back. I didnt know her at first, but we got to talking next thing you know she is bad mouthing Eli's BBQ, and saying she doesn't understand why people love it so much. I put my foot in my mouth before she told me who she was and i said because everyone knows Montgomery Inn is made off site now and shipped to the stores and reheated. Its terrible quality for the price. I wouldnt feed my dog Montgomery Inn. I am surprised she didnt stab me in the seat...

^Family-owned businesses are often clueless because the loudmouth knucklehead of the second generation always seems to get in charge, not the person who understands technical stuff.

Everything is made in bond hill at the commissary, then they ship them to the restaurants where they are slathered in bbq and reheated.

Downtown pub to be overhauled under new owners

A downtown Irish pub is getting an overhaul and a more authentic menu under new ownership.

O'Reilly's in the AT580 building on Sixth Street downtown is being taken over by the owners of Prime Cincinnati. The new owners plan on reopening it as Street City Pub early as next week, according to Michael McCabe of McCabe Media, who represents Prime Cincinnati.

I don't think Montgomery Inn has attempted to change their menu or the decor of their restaurants since about 1985. They have made no attempt to cater to younger people who might have different tastes or a more adventurous palate. So I think that as their primary clientele continues to get older, Montgomery Inn does not have a bright future ahead of them.

Eli's is the perfect example. There is a line out the door at their original location. It's really good quality food and it's super casual. Paper plates, picnic tables, community record player, etc. BBQ is really popular with younger people right now, but in a more authentic casual type of environment.

Having "real" BBQ at Eli's certainly helps too. Montgomery Inn seems to be about as authentic as getting riblets from Applebees.

Haha, Boomer Cincinnati stuff is SO over.

Fixed that for ya. ?

Yeah, an "authentic" BBQ joint would be a food truck, a shack, or a hood strip mall.

Mount Adams cafe renovates to compete with OTR

A Mount Adams cafe that bills itself as the neighborhood's welcome center underwent a complete renovation to keep up with Cincinnati's booming dining scene.

Bow Tie Cafe at 1101 St. Gregory St. just completed a total overhaul of the interior of its dining room. Flip through the photos above for a look inside.

Bow Tie, owned by Caveh Azadeh and Niko Grammas with former Bengal Dhani Jones as a co-founder, opened in 2010 as more of a traditional coffee-focused cafe. That shifted over the years to fill a need in the neighborhood where there were many restaurants will full table service but not a lot of grab-and-go or casual eateries.

Iconic downtown diner closing after 60 years

A longtime downtown diner that has called the Carew Tower home for the last six decades is closing its doors.

Hathaway's Diner at 441 Vine St. announced on Facebook on Tuesday that it will be closing. A final date has not been set. The diner has been at its location on the ground floor of the Carew Tower since 1956.

I assumed that they were closing because the new Frisch’s stole their business. However, the article states that “the diner's lease was not renewed” so maybe something else is going on.

Honestly the past year Hathaway's Diner had gotten to a place of no return even before Frisch's opened up. I took some co-workers in there about six months ago place was dirty, not just dirty tables, but floors, walls, kitchen area. Then the servers didnt want to be there, they were out of everything, and the food that did arrive 40 mins later was inedible. I use to love coming here with my parents and grandparents, the ownership just didnt know how to keep the place going correctly.

Tokyo Kitty, Video Archive owner branches into restaurants with newest venture

The owner of some of Cincinnati's most creative bars is branching into the restaurant industry with its latest venture.

Gorilla Cinema, which opened Overlook Lodge in Pleasant Ridge, Video Archive in Walnut Hills and Tokyo Kitty downtown, is launching Lonely Pine Steakhouse at 6085 Montgomery Road this spring, next to its original spot in Pleasant Ridge.

Owner Jacob Trevino told me he wants the place to harken back to his past growing up in Houston, Texas.

"Looking at the history of the steakhouse, a good steakhouse was based around the family," he said. "When you go to an opulent steakhouse, you're not necessarily paying for the steak on your plate. You're paying for the sommelier and the tablecloths and the waitstaff."

Secret's out on Chick-fil-A's downtown Cincinnati location

Chick-fil-A usually opens new restaurants with a splash, with lines out the door before opening for a chance at free food for a year. But the popular chicken sandwich chain quietly opened a new spot downtown recently with almost no fanfare.

Chick-fil-A opened a pop-up shop inside the 580 Building on the second floor near the 580 Market in October. It's what the chain calls an "alternative distribution point," much like when it sets up on Fountain Square during the summer.

Jose Salazar's third restaurant is going to be an American comfort food eatery named for the crossroads near Findlay Market where it's located.

Salazar hopes to open Goose & Elder at 1800 Race St. by late spring. He plans it as an American comfort food restaurant with healthier options and an adjoining bar that will stay open late to serve residents of that area.

The menu will contain items like steak frites, shrimp cocktail, chicken schnitzel, duck confit and bone marrow, as well as healthier fare like avocado toast, quinoa bowls and salads. The restaurant will also offer a number of gluten-free items.

Condado opening 2nd Cincinnati location

Condado Tacos, a Columbus-based tacos and tequila restaurant, is opening a second location in Cincinnati.

Condado has signed a lease for a 4,000-square-foot restaurant in the Encore of Oakley development. Joe Kahn, CEO of Condado, said with the success of the first Cincinnati Condado at the Banks, he started looking for a second location. MadTree Brewing Co. and Crossroads Church attracted Kahn to the Encore of Oakley development.

“MadTree is in our backyard and it’s jam-packed any given day of the week. It’s the demographic we go for,” Kahn told me. He also said being right next to Crossroads is a plus, as the church fills its parking lot on a regular basis.
