Tom & Chee releases revamped menu under new ownership

Cincinnati-born grilled cheese and soup restaurant – and "Shark Tank" phenom – Tom & Chee is releasing its first new menu since the company was acquired by Gold Star Chili.

Tom & Chee is rolling out a simplified menu that has been revamped to include new elevated sandwiches. It's the first major change since the company was acquired by Gold Star in 2017.

"People look at our menu and say, 'it's just grilled cheese and soup, I can make that at home,'" co-founder Jenny Rachford told me. "We had to do something to cut through that perception."

A Columbus-based pizza parlor and its sister liquor bar are preparing to open their first Cincinnati location next month.

Mikey's Late Night Slice and its adjoining drinkery Oddfellows Liquor Bar plans to open to the public at 2014 Elm St. in Over-the-Rhine on March 11. That's about a block away from Rhinegeist.

"We found a little corner of the neighborhood we thought was underdeveloped and could use some help," owner Mikey Sorboro told me.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

I'm not sure if this weekend was just especially busy due to Bockfest, but it was extremely hard to find anywhere to eat in OTR that didn't have a 2+ hour wait. Normally you can just walk in to some of the more "hidden" places on side streets with little wait, even on weekends, but even those were packed. We ended up walking to Taqueria Mercado downtown and getting seated immediately.

But did you get a Margarita tower?

If you're solo or just with one other person the bar is always my move anywhere in OTR.  You can get seated and eat your entire meal before getting an actual table.  If you've got a group though then the bar isn't really an option.

Dining Out: Libby's Southern Comfort

libbys*750xx640-360-0-34.jpg

Having recently been on vacation in Charleston, S.C., I had a flashback when I stepped into Libby’s Southern Comfort. Brad Wainscott and his wife, Michelle, opened the restaurant in January in Covington’s Duveneck Square. Brad is no stranger to the restaurant business, having grown up helping in his dad’s local spots: His father, Butch Wainscott, is the owner of two popular places in Northern Kentucky: Greyhound Tavern and the Tousey House Tavern.

The Libby in the restaurant's name is Brad's daughter; the logo is Libby and Yuma, their black Lab.

The feel of this charming place is "modern rustic," featuring a long bar made from a black walnut tree that came from Indian Hill and a quaint area of tables. As soon as this weather cooperates, there is space outside with plenty of seating.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

Earlier this week, I got a preview of the new Mikey's Late Night Slice location that is opening in the Brewery District, just north of Rhinegeist, and the attached Oddfellows bar. I'm not exaggerating when I say that this will be transformative for the Northern Liberties/Brewery District area. Rhinegeist is a hugely popular destination already, but it's hard to tell since it's a big brick building with nothing at street level to give any sense of activity. With LNS, Oddfellows, and the ax throwing place all open, I think you're actually going to start to see large crowds of people walking around on the street in that part of the neighborhood for the first time in...80 years?

Anyway, if you'd like to check out Late Night Slice, they are having a neighborhood preview tonight starting at 6pm. They're giving away free pizza and a cash bar will also be open.

Oddfellows will take a few more weeks to open, but it looks like they had the buildout mostly finished, aside from a few used Bevador coolers they bought and were trying to get back into working order.

Why doesn't this have putt putt? You can't call yourself a country club and not provide putt putt... http://bushwickcountryclub.com/

This bar seems super half assed. They're blatantly ripping off the name from Northside Yacht Club, and the description of their food and drinks looks like exactly 0 thought was put into making the place special in any way. Every bar doesn't have to be unique and special, but saying you'll be serving long island iced teas and ham and cheese sandwiches in the press release seems super lazy to me. Oh well, I wish them luck.

"A partial menu posted on Facebook shows food offerings like fries and tater tops served with dips like cheese, honey mustard, ranch and aioli and toppings like chili cheese, vegan chili, bacon cheese, cheeseburger and chicken garlic parmesan. Other food offerings include sandwiches like ham and cheese, turkey club and a BLT, as well as a Chicago-style hot dog.

Drink options include cocktails like the Cape Cod, Long Island iced tea, screwdriver, margarita, Tom Collins, sea breeze and Manhattan. The club offers shots like the lemon drop, Washington apple, green tree and honey badger."

Daniel Wright's newest restaurant and bar – with a Middle Eastern flavor – set to open

Chef Daniel Wright's newest outing is a pair of concepts – a dive bar and a walk-up food window serving Middle Eastern street food – and it's set to open early next week.

Daniel and Lana Wright, who operate three restaurants in Over-the-Rhine – Senate, Abigail Street and Pontiac BBQ – plan to open Forty Thieves and Holiday Spirits Bar at 1538 Race St. on March 19.

"It's not a restaurant, it's a bar with really, really good food," Wright told me. "I wanted to build a place I wanted to eat at and a place I wanted to hang out and drink at."

The two concepts are connected but independent. Forty Thieves will serve dishes like falafel, shawarma and grilled chicken thighs either in a pita sandwich with house-pickled vegetables and house-made sauces or over hummus with pita on the side.

Check out Cincinnati’s impressive showing among top cities for foodies

sotto9125*750xx600-338-0-31.jpg

Cincinnati ranks among the top 2.5 percent of U.S. cities for foodies, according to a new report.

The Queen City ranks No. 14 of 628 cities surveyed by real estate website Zumper.com. Cincinnati is the top-ranked city in Ohio, joined only by Mentor (No. 70) in the top 100.

To determine the top cities for foodies, Zumper analyzed data from all U.S. cities with a population of at least 60,000 residents across four metrics:

*Restaurants per capita

*Bars per capita

*Yelp rating rank (percentage of 4-star or better restaurants)

*Percentage of income spent on rent.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

That entire article skips the fact that Covington is ranked #15, just one spot below Cincinnati. They go out of their way to mention Mentor Ohio at #70, but no love for the Cov. This is one more (albeit small and stupid) example of Cincinnati ignoring NKY. So there was only one other city in Ohio; how is Mentor, a city 250 miles away, any way more related to what a Cincinnatian should care about or to use as context for this ranking, than a city that literally borders Cincinnati?

Sorry about the rant, I love Business Courier, but a good chunk of the Cincinnati MSA is in Kentucky and I often feel left out. Good for BOTH Cincinnati and Covington for being in the top 15 of this pointless ranking.

EDIT: Business Courier updated to add Covington to their story, apparently sometimes complaining works.

Covington chef opens food operation in local craft brewery

Chef Baron Shirley partnered with owner Tricia Houston to open Farmstand Market & Cafe inside of Wooden Cask Brewery at 629 York St. in Newport. The restaurant opened on March 28. It's the second location for Farmstand, behind Houston's first in Union, which opened in 2017.

The Farmstand at Wooden Cask has a menu focused on sandwiches, both hot and cold, and bar bites meant to pair well with and utilize the brewery's beer. Shirley said about half of the menu overlaps with the original Farmstand in Union, with the other half created by him.

A College Hill Mexican restaurant using a tortilla recipe that dates back to before America was even a country is set to open this week.

Tortilleria Garcia is opening April 17 at 5917 Hamilton Ave., with a grand opening celebration set for April 23. It's the second location for owner Omar Garcia, who opened a restaurant in Springdale in 2014.

Garcia grew up on his family farm in Michoacan, Mexico, where his mother and grandmother would cook and grind the corn to make masa, the dough used to make tortillas.

Cincinnati restaurant launches second food truck

A Cincinnati restaurant that was born as a mobile food trailer has returned to its roots in a sense with the purchase of a second food truck.

Sweets & Meats BB launched with Kristen Bailey and Anton Gaffneysmoking meats in the parking lot of the Mount Washington Creamy Whip in 2014. They went through the Mortar entrepreneurship program, then debuted a food truck in 2016, before opening a brick-and-mortar take-out restaurant in Mount Washington in 2017.

They hit the streets in their newest food truck on April 11.
