OTR restaurant reopens after renovation, menu overhaul

An Over-the-Rhine restaurant that opened toward the beginning of the neighborhood's renaissance is re-introducing itself to diners with a new menu and renovated dining space.

Quan Hapa, which opened at 1331 Vine St. in 2012, has been closed for renovations since late September. The wait is now over, with the restaurant reopening on Nov. 17, showing off a new dining room and menu developed by its culinary team.

Quan Hapa was one of the Lang Thang Group's earliest restaurants, opening after Pho Lang Thang's 2010 debut. Bao Nguyen, who operates the group alongside his brother Duy Nguyen and business partners Danny Yant and Mike Dew, told me the idea behind the renovation and the menu overhaul was born from the coronavirus pandemic.

$150 million Montgomery Quarter lands first restaurant tenant

Montgomery Quarter, a $150 million mixed-use development in the heart of Montgomery, has landed its first restaurant tenant.

Cunningham Restaurant Group has signed a lease for about 4,500 square feet of space for a Bru Burger Bar. This will be the company’s third Bru Burger Bar location in Greater Cincinnati, joining restaurants in downtown Cincinnati and Fort Mitchell, and 14th overall.

Mike Cunningham, founder and CEO of Indianapolis-based Cunningham Restaurant Group, said with the success of his Stone Creek Dining Co. location in Montgomery, it made sense to build on that presence.

$20 million Cincinnati food hall lands first tenant, reveals name

The $20 million food hall that is under construction at Madison Square in Madisonville has its first tenant and a new name.

Element Eatery is the name of the 34,500-square-foot food hall and live entertainment venue coming to Madison Square at the corner of Red Bank Expressway and Madison Road. And the venue will be anchored by Taft’s Brewing Co., which will oversee the 48-tap beer garden.

Tyler Troendle, associate director of AT Hospitality LLC, which is developing Element Eatery, said the venue will provide another reason for people to visit Madison Square, making this part of the city its own culinary destination.

“Our intent is to bring more people to the neighborhood,” Troendle told me. “This is an entryway for Madisonville from the west, and we are getting people accustomed to stopping here and hopefully that spreads down the road.”

Chef Christian Gill closing his flagship Cincinnati restaurant

[...] Boomtown Biscuits & Whiskey at 1201 Broadway St. in Pendleton, the first restaurant Gill opened, in conjunction with business partner PJ Neumann, will host its last dinner service on Jan. 23. The restaurant first opened on March 3, 2018. [...]

While the restaurant did great brunch business for two days on weekends, it struggled to build a lunch and dinner business during the other days of the week, Gill said. With food costs rising, it became harder for brunch to carry the business.

Boomtown has made various attempts to expand its dinner business in Pendleton, something it has found success with in its sister location in Union, Ky., but it never found the audience.

On 1/6/2022 at 10:15 AM, Cygnus said:

I enjoy this place too and my wife and I have been twice now.  The last time was after a playhouse in the park show. Not a bad walk from Mt. Auburn where we live.

So we've now seen several different restaurants close their smaller OTR locations while keeping their larger suburban locations open (Senate, A Tavola, Boomtown). It is a challenge to operate a restaurant in these OTR retail spaces with a small kitchen and small dining room. I think that 3CDC and other landlords should really make an effort to lure up-and-coming chefs to try out new concepts with small menus in these spaces but I suspect the reaction will be exactly the opposite -- to combine these storefronts into larger spaces that can be filled by established restauranteurs like Thunderdone and Dan Wright.

Yeah i fear that too.  I get the flight to the suburbs for established brands that got their start in OTR.  There's plenty of money to go around in the Cinci burbs, and OTR's established restaurants are currently too dependent on suburban families making their way downtown.  Instead of doubling down and trying to compete with suburban restaurants for business, keeping spaces small/takeout-oriented for the growing residential base/worker base downtown should be the focus.

Exactly. The restaurant/bar industry is so different today than when the Gateway Quarter was originally envisioned. There are now plenty of places where suburbanites can get excellent food/drinks without having to come downtown. OTR should differentiate itself by giving opportunities to up-and-coming people and give people a reason to come to OTR to experience something special, rather than just having Vine Street be a lab for Thunderdome to come up with its next brand that it will then recreate in Indy, Columbus, and Louisville.

At the same time, the A Tavola owners opened Taglio in OTR. I'd say there are more restaurants opening in OTR than closing. Pearl Star is amazing Meat and Three is awesome. The Empanada Box. The list goes on.

Did did Boomtown just close? Sad to hear this news! I went last week and it had a long line out the door. Always seemed busy.

Let’s not pretend the pandemic hasn’t played a huge role on essentially crippling the restaurant industry.

I was able to get a reservation to Carlo and Johnny on NYE and that places is usually booked ahead for a good month or 2. When I was there eating dinner the restaurant was half empty (when it’s normally packed to the brim, especially on NYE).

The current omicron spike is causing a lot of people to continue to shift from going out and rather eating at home and cooking/door dashing food.

I’d also argue the current inflation is really hurting alot of average Americans. Wages aren’t exactly skyrocketing for customer service employees or those with average paying jobs…but grocery prices are becoming quite insane and a record number of people are now on government food assistance than ever before.

Before you could maybe argue in some ways that certain places were cheaper to eat out and justify not grocery shopping as much - as a way to save money. Now both options suck. Food is just way too expensive now.

My rent has also gone up 6 percent a record, for 2022, and when I called and asked why the steep increase they said it was because of the current inflation…same went for many of my other friends who rent.

Life is really hard right now financially for many Americans. Many aren’t rushing to eat. Heck, some of them are barely

rushing out the grocery stores anymore. Food insecurity has really become a huge problem in America and has now begun to really hit the middle class - working class American family harder than ever before in recent memory.

4 hours ago, Troeros2 said:

No one’s pretending anything.

Christian Gill mentioned the pandemic as part of the justification for closing the Pendleton location — but he also said that the NKY location has a larger kitchen which can accommodate a larger menu, which has helped it appeal to a wider audience, and does better weekday business because of the residential base and big employers nearby. The Pendleton story might be totally different in a few years with Industry open and hopefully some more of the nearby parking lots being redeveloped.

And while many people have struggled financially during the pandemic and might be cutting back on restaurant visits, other people are doing exceptionally well and have more cash to spend than ever before. For example, there are a lot of families that would normally go on a summer vacation every year but skipped them over virus concerns, and now have extra money to put into buying a new TV, a new car, or dining out. And that's a part of the reason we're seeing inflation right now.

Didn't @taestell just mention this?

Anyone know if The Mercer OTR has permanently closed? Wife was supposed to attend an event there Wednesday and it was just canceled. Their website returns a 404.

Yea, that’s the Eventbrite event I linked. Refund came across around 3pm but no reason was given for the cancellation.

Overheard a conversation yesterday (both people connected to the local restaurant/bar industry) about how Mercer OTR has permanently closed, although I can't find any news articles or social media content to back that up.

I saw Margy Waller post a photo that it closed on her instagram story.

Shake Shack plans first Greater Cincinnati location

A Michigan-based commercial real estate developer is working on plans to bring the region’s first Shack Shake to Liberty Township.

Liberty Retail Management LLC, an affiliate of Bingham Farms, Mich.-based Alrig USA, is requesting a major modification to a preliminary planned unit development for a proposed medical office and future restaurant and retail development at the northeast corner of Liberty Way and Wyle Street in front of the $350 million Liberty Center. According to the application, the first phase of the site would include a two-story dermatological clinic and the second phase is planned for restaurant and retail development.

The preliminary development plans for the property show a 3,200-square-foot Shake Shack, the popular fast-casual chain based in New York City known for its cast-iron cooked burgers, located in the western portion of the 4.2-acre property. There are currently no Shack Shake locations in Greater Cincinnati, with the closest locations in Columbus and Indianapolis.
