The Mercer in OTR has closed.

Sad. Feel like there aren’t to many fine dining experiences in otr left.

Still boggles my mind how thunderdome can continuously pump out successful restaurant concept after successful restaurant concept in otr yet to so many others continuously fail.

Hopefully the economy improves soon, and 3cdc can finally get tenants. I know the pandemic and inflation has taken a toll but you would think regardless that places like the old 16 bit spot or the old elm and iron spot would have some type of tenant by now…

Is this satire?

Another otr restaurant is shutting down…boom box buns the latest restaurant to shut down. So many restaurants closing.

While I hate to see any small business fail its important to remember that restaurants are one of the riskiest businesses to be in. They close all the time and most don't make it more than a couple years. Restaurants close all the time in New York / Chicago / SF - and locally they close in Hyde Park / Anderson / Mason etc... I would not use that as a barometer for the success of a neighborhood.

Kenwood didn't die when Prime & Wine caught fire.  OTR will be alright.

That location is kind of cursed. Picnic & Pantry, Injoy, and Boombox have all failed there and I think it's because it's just big enough to have a high rent but not big enough to actually have meaningful interior seating. Depending strictly on takeaway business is one thing, but it has a weird layout that means the rent is paying for a couple hundred square feet of space that really isn't utilized.

Clearly the intersection isn't bad, as Salazar and Low Spark have been successful throughout all those restaurants closing, that spot is just weird and will require a really popular takeout space only similar to City Bird. Personally I think OTR needs a cheapish, lunch focused sandwich spot every since Panino closed and that would be a great spot.

I think Boom Box had a couple of problems.

1) Covid really hurt some of the biggest audience. Late night crowds simply stopped going out for a long time, and it hasn't fully recovered.

2) That location isn't great for late night food. Most late night food is centered around Main Street, where they started. I was worried about them as soon as they announced the move because the location isn't busy late at night. It's a little off the beaten path.

Obviously Covid hurt them but I agree that the move to that location was not good for business. Many people were saying that back when it was originally announced 2 years ago, pre-pandemic.

Neighborhood bar with ice cream window opening in $9M College Hill development

A College Hill couple plans to open a neighborhood bar to serve their community, but with a twist: a walk-up ice cream window serving cones out to an expansive patio.

Big Chill is coming to 5912 Hamilton Ave. in College Hill as part of the $9 million mixed-use, scattered-site Keymark project being co-developed by the College Hill Community Urban Redevelopment Corp. (CHCURC) and 8K Construction. The goal is to open by fall or early winter of this year.

Big Chill is being opened by Evan Wallis, a veteran of Cincinnati's bar and restaurant industry, and his wife Hannah Wheatley. Rather than pigeon-holing Big Chill as a craft beer bar or a cocktail bar, they're aiming to open a neighborhood bar.

"We want it to be the type of place that anyone would walk into and feel like there's something for them," Wheatley told me.

Food hall with 36 holes of mini-golf planned for Oakley

The developer behind Northern Kentucky's Covington Yard outdoor food park is planning on opening a similar concept in the heart of Oakley, but with the addition of two 18-hole miniature golf courses.

A development group led by Josh Niederhelman and Mark Hemberger with CURO has plans to develop an indoor-outdoor food hall with an elevated balcony, stage, courtyard and 36 holes of miniature golf – an easy course and a difficult course – in the southwest corner of the Oakley Station development, next to Anthem's office. A name for the concept has not yet been chosen.

Niederhelman told me that with the success of Covington Yard, the group was looking to expand the concept with a new location, and the 3.5-acre site in Oakley seemed like a great fit to include the miniature golf component. They had looked at different entertainment options from pickleball to a craft brewery, but miniature golf seemed like the best fit.

"There are not many locations for that in close proximity to the Oakley area," he said. "We wanted to bring back the miniature golf concept that can be played by all people, from kids to adults to golf professionals."

Damn on one hand I want to hate things that go in Oakley Station but on the other hand I love drinking and playing putt putt. This could be really awesome and I've wanted an urban and adult putt putt for a long time after doing it in Brooklyn. Hopefully if it's successful they bring the idea back to Covington or do new location in OTR because I would much rather do that than throw axes or go duckpin bowling.

^From a broader neighborhood perspective, this is the most interesting part of the article:

Quote

One of the things that was most attractive about the Oakley location, he said, was the proposed pedestrian tunnel underneath the Oakley rail yard that would connect the Oakley Station development with the neighborhood's business district and Oakley Square.

The Oakley Community Council approved $265,000 to explore a pedestrian and bike connector from Disney Street in Oakley Station underneath the rail yard to 34th Avenue, which feeds into Oakley Square. Engineering firm Woolpert is creating drawings that will be used to apply for federal funding to construct the tunnel.

Shuttered OTR restaurant plans reopening

An Over-the-Rhine restaurant that has been closed since the beginning of the year has plans to welcome diners back.

Quan Hapa, a pan-Asian street food eatery at 1331 Vine St. in Over-the-Rhine, plans to reopen by the end of April after having temporarily shuttered in early January amid a labor crunch caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Quan Hapa is operated by the Lang Thang Group, which also owns Pho Lang Thang adjacent to Findlay Market in Over-the-Rhine. At the time of Quan Hapa's closure, Lang Thang Group partner Bao Nguyen had said the staffing shortage caused the group to consolidate both of its restaurants' staffs into Pho Lang Thang and expand service there to add dinner.

Restaurant with rooftop deck planned for East Walnut Hills

The owners of an Oakley restaurant and pub plan to renovate a former garage building in East Walnut Hills into a restaurant with a rooftop deck.

Brothers Troy and Brendan McAndrews, owners of McAndrews Glass and the Establishment in Oakley, plan to convert the former garage building at 2724 Woodburn Ave. in East Walnut Hills into a high-end neighborhood bar across two floors, with several areas for private events and a rooftop deck.

The brothers purchased the building in early 2019 for $50,000 in hopes of renovating it into a space that could then be used by another restaurateur or chef. But as time went on and they vetted potential lessees, Troy McAndrews told me that he and Brendan started to feel like maybe they were the ones who should to bring new life to the space.

A new restaurant from an acclaimed Cincinnati chef is now open inside of the Cincinnatian Hotel downtown.

Maverick's Restobar and Lounge quietly opened its doors inside of the Cincinnatian Hotel at 601 Vine St. on March 18, and Chef Josh Campbell said a grand opening celebration is in the works.

Maverick's features a menu of new American cuisine with ingredients sourced as locally as possible. The menu harkens back to his restaurant Mayberry, which he operated in Over-the-Rhine from 2009 to 2013, with food Campbell said is approachable, but very good.

Django Western Taco opening at downtown Cincinnati craft brewery Rebel Mettle

A popular taco restaurant that once had three locations around Cincinnati is being revived at a downtown craft brewery.

Django Western Taco will begin serving its fare at Rebel Mettle Brewery at 412 Central Ave. on May 3. Django will serve its tacos during the brewery's open hours.

Rebel Mettle Marketing Director Jillian Francois told me it had always been the brewery's intention to offer some sort of food, and it had previously tried to schedule food trucks to park nearby, but with all of the turmoil amid the Covid-19 pandemic and the restrictions on gathering that came with it, it was hard to maintain a consistent schedule.
