Still no Gold Star downtown...

Restaurant Frankie's Sips & Savories opens downtown in tribute to Frank Daoud, Gold Star Chili co-founder

Frankie's Sips & Savories quietly opened mid-June at 14 Garfield Place.

The children of one of the founders of Cincinnati staple Gold Star Chili just opened a new downtown bar and restaurant in tribute to their father.

Frankie's was opened in honor of Fahid "Frank" Daoud, one of four brothers who bought a Mount Washington restaurant that became Gold Star Chili. Frank Daoud died in May 2020 at 83 years old. Daoud's four children – brothers Sami and Samir Daoud and their sisters Sama Daoud and Muna Naber – opened Frankie's to honor Frank Daoud's love of travel, food, friends and hosting.

"One of the most memorable things about dad is he was known as the greatest host that ever lived, and I think that is what we reflect to everyone that comes into this place," Sami Daoud told me.

The walls of the entrance are covered with Frank Daoud's popular quotable sayings, and then throughout the restaurant are family photos from Frank Daoud's travels around the world, each with a story.

It looks like Frankies will be open only for dinner/evenings, which seems odd to me in that part of downtown. There is a decent amount of residential on Garfield, and it's only a couple blocks from Fountain Square in one direction and Court street in the other, but right now that area is kind of dead in the evenings. I know that the downtown daytime population isn't the same with many people working from home now, and that staffing is probably the main reason, but I hate how many restaurants downtown and in OTR are no longer opening for lunch.

Also to @Cygnus's point, it is weird that there are zero Gold Stars downtown. How is it supposed to be a competition/rivalry between Gold Star and Skyline when one of them isn't even an option throughout all of downtown, OTR or even all of Uptown with the MLK location closing. With Skyline being right next to fountain square it also becomes the default Cincinnati style chili for most visitors to try as well. Oh well the Skyline on Court has reopened and looks great, they even found some nice historic details behind the crappy old ACT ceiling.

The owners of Sebastian Bakehouse, whose colorful viennoiserie pastries have garnered long lines at weekend pop-ups in Hyde Park, have signed a lease at 6846 Wooster Pike in Mariemont.

One of Cincinnati's largest restaurant groups revives concept by GABP

One of Cincinnati's largest restaurant groups is reviving a piece of Cincinnati sports history with its latest concept.

Ignite Entertainment, owner of venues like Pampas Argentine Gastropub and Che Empanadas y Mas, is reviving the In Between Tavern in downtown across from Great American Ball Park, officials announced in a news release. The restaurant will open to the public July 11.

In Between Tavern, located at 307 Sycamore St., first opened in 1969 serving home fans and visitors for nearly 50 years before closing. It was replaced by Asian restaurant Corner Bistro, which closed for good in 2021.

Barbecue restaurant with live music coming to Newport on the Levee

A Kentucky native with 20 years of hospitality experience is opening his first restaurant at Newport on the Levee.

Kevin Dailey, who worked in hospitality jobs in Las Vegas, San Diego and San Francisco, has established Prodigal Son Hospitality Group, his first solo venture. And he has signed a leased with North American Properties to open his first restaurant, Shiners on the Levee, an 8,400-square-foot barbecue restaurant with live country music and entertainment this fall.

“The Levee is an untapped jewel with so much potential to be the entertainment anchor of Northern Kentucky,” Dailey said in a news release. “NAP’s investment in the property has led to it doing a complete 180 and filling a recreational gap on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River.”

Relocating. Old location has been closed for a few months.

Somewhat unsurprising. They spent a fortune redoing the space. I think its too large and chopped up to be logistically managed as a restaurant. the overhead had to be killing them. Restaurants are among the toughest businesses to operate. i don't seeing it getting any better as food costs are climbing, and potentially getting worse as the Ukrainian source for feed grain impacts livestock supply in the near future. Any one of your go-to spots could easily disappear.

Boomtown location in Pendleton closed, for good this time

In another reversal, chef Christian Gill has closed his flagship Cincinnati restaurant.

Boomtown Biscuits & Whiskey, located 1201 Broadway St. in Pendleton, closed at the beginning of July. It was the first restaurant Gill opened, along with friend and business partner Paul J. "PJ" Neumann in 2018. The biscuit-centric restaurant offered a twist on traditional American fare.

In late 2021, Gill announced plans to shutter Boomtown's original location due to Covid-related headwinds. However, those plans were reversed in January.

Growing Cincinnati coffee shop buys pastry company

A growing local coffee shop is merging with a local pastry wholesaler.

Urbana Cafe has bought Moxy, a Newport-based pastry company founded during the Covid-19 pandemic, for an undisclosed amount, according to the owners of both businesses. Moxy's pastries will arrive at Urbana's five locations across Cincinnati later this summer. In the meantime, Moxy will work on creating a unique menu for Urbana.

Under the terms of the deal, Urbana founder and CEO Daniel Noguera said Moxy will continue to sell its pastries under its current name to its wholesale accounts – including 1215 Wine Bar and Coffee Lab, Mom' n 'em Coffee & Wine and Collective Espresso.

Korean fried chicken chain bb.q Chicken opening in downtown Cincinnati at 4th & Race

A Korea-based fried chicken chain is opening its first Cincinnati location at a major downtown development.

Seoul, Korea-based bb.q Chicken is opening in a 3,500-square-foot space downtown at the $116 million 4th & Race development with a goal of serving up fried chicken in early 2023. An exact opening date has not been set.

The restaurant chain was founded in Korea in 1995 and began a global expansion in 2003. The chain specializes in Korean-style fried chicken, which is different from American-style fried chicken in the spices and flavor profile, as well as being deep fried twice to give it an extra crispy shell.

Sharonville Italian restaurant Vincenzo's rebranding as Porta Nera under new ownership

The new owner of a longtime suburban Cincinnati restaurant is rebranding it as an Italian-American eatery.

Chef Aaron Boehm, who acquired Vincenzo's at 11525 Chester Road in Sharonville in May, rebranded it as Porta Nera effective July 19.

Boehm told me the rebranding came as he began making changes to the menu at Vincenzo's and found himself introducing more Italian-American comfort food staples, rather than the old country-style Italian food Vincenzo's was known for.

"People expected a style of Italian that was not my own and was not the direction I wanted to go," he said. "The best way to proceed was to change the name to coincide with a change of direction."

I’m assuming it has something to do with the owner of the building. Maybe huge rent increase? Is it 3cdc owned? If that’s the case hopefully hu can find another space in OTR. I’d love to see them go up to Findlay market if they can’t find a space below Liberty.

Cincinnati restaurateur Joe Creighton opens Covalt Station in Milford

A Cincinnati restaurateur has just opened his latest eatery, a family friendly restaurant on the border of Old Milford and Terrace Park meant to evoke the feeling of being on vacation.

Joe Creighton opened Covalt Station at 222 Wooster Pike on July 20.

Creighton is best known for his neon-drenched Over-the-Rhine bar Mecca, as well as having been the proprietor of restaurants like Cheapside Cafe and Mount Adams' the Rookwood. His establishments have all been deeply personal – Mecca, which opened in 2016, was modeled after a room lit by black lights and neon where he and friends would watch movies in high school – but for Covalt Station the father of two young children turned his eye toward family.

Royce sets opening as Nashville restaurateur aims to bring new life to iconic downtown Cincinnati corner

When Terry Raley opens his latest restaurant, Royce, in downtown Cincinnati next week, it will bring to fruition a concept more than a decade in the making.

The eatery — the second project in the city for the Nashville-based restaurateur and Amaranth Hospitality Group founder — will open at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Foundry development on the corner of Fifth and Vine, facing Fountain Square. Royce, a modern brasserie, or casual French-leaning restaurant, borrows heavily from elements found in a 1920s Paris sidewalk bistro with a menu starring charcuterie, a la carte meat and fish dishes and one of the most super wine programs in the city, Raley said.

It's his most important project to date, he told me. Royce is named in honor of his grandfather, who first introduced him to cooking. Cincinnati’s walkability, its European-inspired architecture and the restaurant’s location — anchored on one of the most prominent corners of downtown — made it the ideal setting to finally bring it to life.

Miss Mary's Ice Cream opening in Sharonville

"It was a grief thing, adjusting to grieving," she said. "'Mom' was my grandmother, she was my dad’s mom, and she took me from the hospital. It was something I did to cope. Once I started focusing on that, it helped me deal with her passing."

Columbia Tusculum's Streetside Brewery unveils expanded patio area, outdoor bar

A craft brewery on Cincinnati's East Side is doubling the number of people it can serve with a new expansion.

s5a8463*750xx5760-3240-0-300.jpg

Columbia Tusculum's Streetside Brewery at 4003 Eastern Ave. just debuted a $500,000 overhaul of its outdoor space that adds a new patio, outdoor taproom, TVs, bathrooms and a new home for its in-house food truck.

The addition of the outdoor taproom and patio traces its origins to 2019 and a decision that likely saved the brewery from potentially having to shutter. At that point in time, brewery founder Kathie Hickey told me, Streetside was choosing between constructing an outdoor patio or buying a canning line to package its beer. It went with the canning line, and that came in just one month before Covid-19 halted all in-person bar and dining activity.

"Delivering beer and carryout in cans saved us," she said.

This outdoor space has been open at least a month and the bar really perplexes me. For its size, it only has a 4 tap kegerator and a fridge with some of their canned beer and misc. seltzers. Not well thought out IMO.

Thunderdome Restaurant Group opening CityBird chicken restaurant on Fountain Square

Thunderdome Restaurant Group is bringing one of its eateries to Fountain Square downtown.

Thunderdome, one of Cincinnati's largest and fastest-growing restaurant groups, is opening its fast-casual CityBird chicken tender restaurant in 2,400 square feet inside a portion of the former Rock Bottom Brewing space on Fountain Square. The goal is to open by spring 2023.

The 15,000-square-foot Rock Bottom Space, which housed the brewery from 1996 until it permanently closed in 2020, is being subdivided to accommodate CityBird and March First Brewing and Distilling, which is taking over 10,000 square feet of space for a restaurant, tasting room and bourbon bar.

Closed Fountain Square restaurant Zablong Peculiar Pizza reopening in Krogers' On the Rhine Eatery food hall

A Fountain Square restaurant that closed its doors earlier this year will reopen downtown inside Kroger's On the Rhine Eatery food hall.

Zablong Peculiar Pizza, which shuttered in February, is reopening in the stall that formerly housed Eli's BBQ in the Kroger food hall. The goal is to open Sept. 12.

Zablong is a fast-casual pizzeria that specializes in oblong-shaped pizzas, customizable and made to order. It puts an emphasis on nine house-made sauces that range from classic tomato to roasted garlic puree or mushroom truffle. Diners can pick from a menu of specialty pizzas, or create their own from a list of toppings. Pizzas are fired in a 600-degree oven and cooked in about 2 minutes.

Crown Restaurant Group reopens Rosie’s Italian in downtown Cincinnati

Crown Restaurant Group has reopened one of its downtown restaurants about a month after announcing it was closing for a rebrand.

Rosie’s Italian is now open in the space that housed Rosie’s Cocktails & Pies at 300 E. Seventh St. The new restaurant serves a menu that includes the recipes and traditions chef and owner Anthony Sitek grew up with.

“Rosie’s is a place to bring some of what I loved about where I grew up on the East Coast to Cincinnati,” Sitek said in a news release.

In that article it mentions that "The Crown Restaurant Group is also taking over the former Mercer restaurant space in Over-the-Rhine, but it has not yet revealed its plans for that location."

That's the first I've heard about the replacement for The Mercer space.

Upscale sushi restaurant Baru, new to Cincinnati, coming to long-vacant downtown space

A high-end sushi restaurant and bar will take over a large space in the 84.51 building downtown that has been vacant since 2019.

Baru is the first elevated sushi concept from Further Concepts, a hospitality group led by Fairfield native Tyler Wogenstahl. The restaurant will be a place to go out for the evening, not take out food.

“One thing we want to embrace is a big night out. Have a date night. Have a celebration. Have an evening with friends. I think everybody deserves that. Everybody’s been through a lot,” Wogenstahl told the Business Courier. “I love the location and what was coming up around it that was going on in the Foundry (building on Fountain Square). The neighbors around it are great operators.”

Element Eatery food hall opening at Medpace's Madison Square development in Madisonville

A $20 million food hall that is bringing nine restaurant tenants to the heart of Medpace's Madison Square development has set its grand opening.

Element Eatery food hall will welcome guests to sample food from nine restaurant tenants, a gelatoria and spirits from a craft distillery inside of the $115 million Madison Square project on Sept. 24.

Tyler Troendle, managing director of the food hall's operator, AT Hospitality, told me he was inspired by food halls he's encountered in cities such as Tampa and Denver.

"We really wanted to do something that was uniquely Cincinnati, that had a focus on cultivating local vendors and top-quality food," he said.
