There's a gap between those two buildings, so I'm curious how they'll "provide slices to the taproom through a window between the venues." Will there be outdoor seating there?

Chef Jean-Robert de Cavel hires Chef Kevin Worthington, reopens French Crust Cafe for dinner

Chef Jean-Robert de Cavel has reopened his Findlay Market restaurant for dinner, and still has plans to revive his flagship eatery, which he closed in 2020.

De Cavel on Oct. 24 reopened his French Crust Cafe at 1801 Elm St. for dinner. He is a French master chef who trained a generation of chefs in restaurants like the Maisonette and Pigall's, restaurateurs who went on to reshape Cincinnati's dining scene.

French Crust Cafe had been closed for dinner service since early spring. It is one of two restaurants de Cavel operates in Cincinnati, alongside Le Bar a Boeuf in Walnut Hills. De Cavel told me the decision to close for dinner stemmed from the staffing shortage that has plagued the entire industry since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Inside Cincinnati's top upscale restaurants: RANKING

By Andy Brownfield  –  Senior staff reporter, Cincinnati Business Courier

Oct 27, 2022

The Maisonette, the legendary restaurant that once defined fine dining in Cincinnati, is no longer around. But there is no shortage of upscale eateries in the Queen City.

Each week the Business Courier brings you a list of the largest players in a given industry – the 25 largest manufacturers, law firms, architectural firms, hospitals. Many of those are easy to quantify: how many employees do they have? How much in local revenue did they bring in last year?

Restaurants are a bit different. Chains would dominate locally if you only look at employment, likely revenue too. So we here at the Courier decided to take a different approach: who has the highest average entree price? Not that price necessarily correlates to quality every time, but let's be real, it often does.

North American Properties partners with Galley Group for food hall at Newport on the Levee

The owner of Newport on the Levee is partnering with a food hall development group to open a new dining destination at the entertainment property next year.

North American Properties announced Tuesday its partnership with Pittsburgh-based Galley Group, a developer and manager of food halls, to open the Galley on the Levee in the former Exchange building outside of the main Gallery, which originally housed Barnes & Noble Booksellers. The food hall is slated to open summer 2023.

Food halls are a modern take on something like the mall food court, in that they bring together multiple food vendors in the same space, allowing diners to choose their preferences. Galley Group, however, operates more like a full-service restaurant. Galley employs its own front-of-house staff of managers, bartenders, runners and bussers, so diners place their order at their food vendor of choice and the food is brought out to them.

^Pretty damning feedback on Short Vine from that article:

Quote

Taste of Belgium’s founder and owner, Jean-Francois Flechet, said the inaccessibility of Short Vine Street was a hinderance to the location there. Additionally, Short Vine seemed like a location with the potential to become a dining destination in the short run, but that potential was never fully realized.

“We really liked the area,” Flechet said, “it’s just that particular street with the wayfinding is just horrible.”

...

“I’m really excited to be … on the right side of campus,” Flechet said. “We always wanted to be around that development.”

I'm not entirely sure what would help Short Vine at this point. I suppose it's just the nature of having three competing business districts around UC (Ludlow, McMillan/Calhoun, and Short Vine), that there will be some "cannibalization" between them.

Edited by jwulsin

...or they just need more population density to better support all three.

I work on campus. I don't feel like Short Vine is that bad, I just don't think ToB was all too popular so I'll be curious to see how it does there.

I would also say that hangover easy didn’t help them on that side of campus either. With being on W. McMillan they will probably have better luck.

Isn't ToB more suitable for Clifton's Ludlow?

Krueger's Tavern reopens at 1313 Vine St. in OTR on Dec. 13, with a menu that includes familiar favorites, but also new dishes evocative of an English tavern.

Kruger's Tavern first opened at 1211 Vine St. – the former home of Lavomatic – in 2015. The restaurant served an eclectic menu of burgers and house-made sausages, with favorites like a pesto jar appetizer and veggie burger made with beets.

Paris Baguette opened at the $116 million 4th & Race development downtown on Dec. 17.

The bakery, which has more than 4,000 locations worldwide, with only 90 of those in the United States, was opened locally by restaurateur Ai Lin. Lin was the founder of Sichuan Chili Chinese Restaurant in Evendale – which she later sold – as well as the owner of Gyu-Kaku Japanese Restaurant at the Kenwood Towne Centre. Her Paris Baguette is the first location in the state of Ohio.

I remember seeing him hanging out of a car window on 4th St. back in 1998, flag waving, when France won the world cup.  This is when DT Cincinnati was in rapid decline, and there were no other cars.
