"The restaurant group quietly closed its location in Cincinnati's CUF neighborhood back in March after only being open for business for a few months. The University Heights Bistro moved into the former Fuzzy's Taco shop space at 165 W. McMillan Ave. near the University of Cincinnati, opening in late 2023.

He plans on reopening the bistro once the UC student body is back on campus for the fall semester as a Taste of Belgium Student Edition. The concept will feature a more streamlined menu and streamlined service. The goal is to reduce the labor cost and the cost of operating in order to be able to offer price points closer to what the average college student can afford."

I don't really understand their original expansion strategy. They seem to just be repeatedly opening large "bistros" in the most expensive buildings and expecting business to be good. 3700 square feet in CUF trying to sell $17 lunches + tip and relying on alcohol sales during every meal just isn't going to work IMO. Every successful business in CUF and Corryville seems to be small spaces that accommodate take out and delivery. I think Adriatico's is half the size of the TOB location in CUF.

Then I imagine they are expecting suburban diners to spend $X on alcohol like they would on Vine Street, and I just don't think the suburban locations are going to be highly alcohol driven. So they probably spent a lot of money on a nice 20-draft system with expensive Belgian beers, and they just aren't going to sell that many.

Because people have to drive afterwards.

By Liz Engel – Digital editor, Cincinnati Business Courier

May 24, 2024

An Over-the-Rhine bar – opening in time for Memorial Day weekend and the unofficial start of summer – is getting a refresh under new management.

Ziggy’s, located adjacent to Ziegler Park in the former Yoli’s space, will celebrate its grand opening at noon Saturday, May 25. The concept takes up residence at 213 Woodward St. in Cincinnati Center City Development Corp. (3CDC)’s Willkommen project.

Yoli’s closed temporarily in late December, a few weeks after announcing a new executive chef, an expanded menu and an extension of its hours. The taco bar, which debuted in July 2023, was the latest venture from operators Garth Lieb and Tom Stephen, who own Liberty’s Bar & Bottle and the Pony nearby. Lieb and Stephen also opened Atwood Oyster House in quick succession in November 2023 in the former Pearlstar spot on Vine Street.

Lang Thang Group co-owner Mike Dew to open Wayfarer Tavern pizzeria

A co-owner and partner of a longtime Cincinnati-area restaurant group is branching out to open his own pizza joint in Northern Kentucky.

Mike Dew of the Lang Thang Group, which is responsible for Vietnamese restaurant Pho Lang Thang, Quan Hapa, which specializes in Asian street food, and Hi-Mark bar, is opening Wayfarer Tavern in Dayton, Ky. He recently signed a lease with Orleans Development for 3,000 square feet in the historic Burton Building, located at 635 Sixth Ave. Previous tenants include Dayton City Hall and the city’s first Kroger.

Dew has been experimenting with pizza for a long time, and he’s finally come up with a style he’s ready to share with the world.

Looking forward to this. Wayfarer has been operating as a pop-up for awhile but sells out so fast I haven't had a chance to try it. Tons of stuff happening in Dayton, KY these days.

Rumblings of a Shake Shack going in where the old Keystone was in USquare by UC.

I wouldn’t be surprised. Going to assume we’ll see one going in Oakley/Madisonville (maybe at the new retail strip they are building across from Madison Bowl) and one going in Florence. Would also love to see one in OtR but I don’t think that’ll happen anytime soon.

The initial renderings of Madison Parke, the area across from Madison Bowl, did show a Shake Shack-esque place in front and I think the developer was trying to manifest that but that was before they added a Swensons one block away which seems pretty redundant to me.

I think Liberty & Elm would be a great location for a Shake Shack (or other national tenants that 3CDC tends to avoid in their retail spaces).

Ruby's Chocolates relocates to Findlay Market following Oakley store closure

A family-owned chocolate shop has relocated from Oakley to Over-the-Rhine.

Ruby’s Chocolates now sits in a 550-square-foot space at 1725 Elm St., a historical mixed-use building right next to Findlay Market.

Sina Danesh is a broker, commercial real estate agent and senior investment adviser at 3CRE. He's also a co-owner of the chocolate shop with his mother, Melinda Mueller. The two were looking to leave their standalone Oakley Square location, at 3923 Isabella Ave., after their lease was up this year.

They loved the Oakley area, where they opened in 2020, and were doing extremely well around holidays such as Mother’s Day, Christmas and Valentine’s Day. But they felt they could grow more if they were located somewhere with more foot traffic.
