I think my wife had two country cd's when we got married and they some how disappeared.

That's kind of funny!

Mr. xumelanie and I ended up stopping at Cadillac Ranch last night for a drink (and saw Kendall, Mrs. Kendall, and aweeks).  The patio was nice, and it was perfect weather for it.  They also were not playing country music the entire time.  Most of it was rock.

what's the crowd and music at below zero?

I don't remember the music, because we ran into an acquaintance and were deep in conversation.  They had an internet jukebox on the wall, and I didn't see a DJ.  The crowd was a mix of casual and well-dressed, gay and straight.  It wasn't busy.  I walk past the building almost daily and I didn't know it was open until we walked by at night.  I suspect a lot of the people there last night were neighborhood residents or friends of the owner, Nigel, who used to be a partner at Hamburger Mary's.

They also were not playing country music the entire time.  Most of it was rock.

Most country music nowadays is rock.

Wish I could go check out some of these places that have just recently opened up...I guess it will have to wait until September  :|

Enjoy your Pigs-In-A-Blanket Randy! LOL!

^I wish I could even enjoy those...lately it has been a bunch of cold, lunch meat sandwiches.  Tonight I went gourmet with a frozen dinner.

I have also had trouble finding anything unique to Atlanta...I would like to dive into the local customs as much as possible, but it has been difficult outside of driving a lot and like a crazy maniac.

Im sure Chris can inform you of all the good soul food places in the ATL

I've seen more than one Bojangles

The Varsity or Silver Skillet are local places to check out (the latter has an excellent breakfast).  Also, Gladys Knight's Chicken N' Waffles is something I am envious of (Midtown, near Bank of America Tower, along Peachtree; check it out).

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

My friend and I went to Below Zero last night to end the evening and we were there for a few drinks last weekend too.  It wasn't crowded but it was like 2:00 am.  Got to play some videos on the video jukebox.  I like the interiors but I was never there when it was Alchemize.  (Did I spell that right?)  Last weekend was more crowded but then it was probably midnight when we stopped then.  They are doing a "soft" opening now and will have a grand opening party in July.

I had Sunday Brunch at Cadillac Ranch. It was mediocre food, however I was totally impressed with the way the bar opens onto the sidewalk.  I've seen places like this in other cities, and it  has the potential to completely change that corner.  6th and Walnut looks to be a happenin' place.

New Italian restaurants coming

June 27, 2007 | CINCINNATI ENQUIRER

About 60 restaurants will open in southern Ohio, Indiana and Northern Kentucky under the Noble Roman's banner, the Indianapolis-based company announced today.

I lived on the Noble Roman's lunch special in High School.  $3 got you a personal pizza, breadsticks and cheese, and a coke.  I think all of Centerville High School ate their at least once a week during the school year.

I went to Cadillac Ranch last week. I'd say the food is a notch below mediocre. The service was just a bit better. One thing that was obnoxious — someone couldn't pick a song to play, so they cruised past old blues, rock, and country to settle on the latest hits from Nashville. Very irritating. Worst onion rings I've ever had. Pulled pork sandwich was not as good as what you can get at Union Terminal food service.

Were there at least attractive girls on the mechanical bull??  :-D

^Sadly, no! I guess the bull wasn't even fired up for riding. I did like the way it opens to the outside though. Seems like a much better bar than restaurant, though the beer selection is thin.

Anyone have a picture of the way it opens to the outside?

For years, I've been amazed that we don't have more open-facade restaurants, cafes, etc.  It's a very European thing that carried over to most eastern cities, but we never got unfortunately.

I'll see it at some point, but that's the closest I'll ever get to the place.

I just drove by it about an hour ago and I have to say I do like the open look myself.    Haven't gotton the nerve yet to go try it!

CiNYC, unfortunately I don't have a photo.  I agree with the comments above, it utilizes the open space better than any other bar in the city.  When you walk by 6th, you can see the entire interior from the street, in this regard it is well done.

Pigall's to add lounge

De Cavel hopes to have adjacent club operating by October

BY JOHN ECKBERG | [email protected]

Chef Jean-Robert de Cavel, operator of Jean-Robert at Pigall's and Jean-Ro Bistro in downtown Cincinnati, plans to add to his galaxy of French-themed restaurants with a lounge at the site of the former Dodd Jewelers on Fourth Street. The site is adjacent to Pigall's.

Neat, I can't wait.

This is great news! However, does anyone thing Jean Robert is perhaps expanding a little too quickly?

I think it does seem he is taking some risks in this new "bar" and in the restaurant in OTR....but this city will never improve unless we have people like him with deep pockets who believe in the city and will invest.

Jean-Robert was at the VIP opening night of the Lodge Bar. I wonder if he was just checking things out, like the crowd turnout, etc ...?

Went to Boi Na Braza - AMAZING!!! if you go you better be ready to eat a lot of meat..

we also checked out the new Cadillac ranchand the lodge bar... the lodge had GREAT music... and the crowd was great... as for the ranch, it was PACKED and we were having a great time there... that will definitely be one of those places that i take friends from out of town...

all in all, Downtown was PACKED tonight there were people everywhere. There were lines for both places and the lodge was especially long.. it could have easily taken you 45 minutes to get in luckily one of the people i was with knew the manager so we were able to get in quickly...

all in all i had some friends that commented things such as "downtown is really cool now" and " we nee to come down here more often", and the occasional "i believe you now brad, Cincinnati is pretty cool"....very good night!  :drunk: not such a good morning  :|

^ Nice. Yeah, I noticed downtown was SLAMMED last night ...

The square was packed, 7th St. was rediculous, 4th St. was doing it's thing with Bang, and 5th was slammed with patrons pouring in/out of Havana, Boi Na Braza and McCormicks!

There are a lot of St. Louisans in town right now taking note. ;)

This is great news! However, does anyone thing Jean Robert is perhaps expanding a little too quickly?

When I was talking to the owner of Park + Vine we discussed this a little bit, and he was able to comment on what he knows about Jean Robert.  He said that Robert lives by the you only live once type of mentality, and he doesn't want to waste anytime with things he wants to do.  So he just goes for it...does that mean that he might lose on a couple of these ventures along the way...maybe, but in the long run I think he'll chalk it up to experience and keep living the good life.  He is truly a great asset for the Cincinnati community to have!

So far he has been pretty spot on with his ventures...almost everyone of his places gets rave reviews and are very successful (correct me if I'm wrong).  I trust his judgment.

Jean-Robert does well; case-in-point - Greenup Cafe, Covington, had to stop taking brunch orders on Sunday at 1:15pm.  They normally stop serving at 2:30pm.  The kitchen was overwhelmed.  They served over 300 that day.

This is not exactly something to be proud of.

No restaurant owner is happy about closing early because the kitchen staff was unprepared for the business it did.

I had brunch there last week and was really disappointed. The service was almost as bad as Wildflour's was and the food was just okay.

I have to agree about The Greenup Cafe. I hate to say anything negative but my husband and I went for brunch a couple of weeks ago, and we won't go back.  We had terrible service, it took 45 minutes to get our food, and we were still hungry when we left.  We sat outside at a table on Greenup Street so the atmosphere was nice, but it didn't make up for the other things I mentioned.

One more thing, I also think it is ridiculous to pay $8 for a beer at happy hour at JeanRo's Bistro.

I am cheering for success in his ventures though! His style is definitely appealing to a certain crowd.

I really enjoyed brunch at Greenup Cafe.

I liked the Bistro, but I thought Bistros were supposed to be cheap !

^ They are cheap if you are paying in Euro, since the dollar sucks right now the French Bistro's are pretty pricey.

I think the best best plan at Greenup is to get carry out coffee and  bag of assorted pastries.  Yum.  The couple of times we had breakfast there I was underwhelmed. However, the pastries are divine.

Jean Ro is one of our all time favaourites.  8 bucks for a beer?  They have some high end offerings there, but I had no idea (but I'm still going back).

By the way, in case you didn't know, Jean Ro has all bottles of wine at half price on Sundays.  That brings it down to less than what you pay at the Party Source in Bellvue for the ones we like.  Check it out. I prefer to call it "two for one".  My wife always reminds me it's actually half price for one.  I like my version better.

Retail Scene

For Uno spot, second chance as restaurant

Cincinnati Business Courier - June 29, 2007

by Lisa Biank Fasig

Staff Reporter

Come August, one Uno will be replaced with one Olive.

A local investor, who with his partners recently acquired the historic Ludlow Garage and several other buildings in Clifton, is reviving the former Pizzeria Uno. The new place, called Olives, will specialize in upscale-casual American fare such as steak, seafood and chicken, with prices ranging from $11 to $22.

way to hype your restaurant pal.

^ :D

So are we talking about the Uno's downtown across from the Aronoff?

No, the one in Clifton on Ludlow.

MrsAWeeks, I believe that Uno's is where Bootsy & Ruby are interested in opening up their joint venture restaurant.

The building formerly occupied by Jack Quinn's Restaurant & Irish Pub may be bought by operators of an Irish bar in Louisville.

The owners of Molly Malone's Irish Pub and Restaurant hope to make the purchase this month.

^ Have you guys ever noticed how hard it is to find something quick to eat in Blue Ash in the evenings or on Sunday? Everything is closed, it seems.

I can't wait to get downtown to go to some of these restaurants... especially Boi Na Braza. Anyone been there yet? What is the $$ looking like?

Haven't been to Boi Na Braza, but I will be going next week.  I've heard wonderful things about it.  Dinner is around $44 per person, and salad bar only is around $20.  Lunch prices are a little cheaper.
