Bagel bakers sought

Einstein Bros. hopes to open several shops here

BY MIKE BOYER | CINCINNATI ENQUIRER

August 3, 2007

Einstein Bros. Bagels, a Denver-based quick casual restaurant chain that launched a franchising effort earlier this year, is looking for franchisees in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

"Cincinnati is a great city and has the type of demographics we're looking for," said Paul Carolan, senior vice president of franchising and licensing for the parent Einstein Noah Restaurant Group.

See link above for article.

The only time I have been to Einstein Bros. Bagel is in Atlanta, GA.  The food reminds me of Bruegger's.  Looks like they won't put one downtown if they are wanting a drive through to go along with it.  The way Cincinnatians drive though, we can put them in for free!

^ I used to live near the Einstein Bros. in Brewery District in Columbus.  Went there more because it was close as I think I prefer other bagels more (Panera) and they used to have this "double-whipped" cream cheese that I didn't care for.  Not sure if they still do . . .

On another note, Universal Grill I hear is changing their menu . . again.  It changed a few months ago when they did the renovations on the dining room. They are currently serving their bar menu in the restaurant along with a selection of other salads and entrees on a printed menu.  Note, they have also stopped serving lunch and brunch on Sunday.  Not sure if they will bring them back.

Here's an email I received today regarding the latest info on the new menu for Universal Grille:

Greetings!

Hi Gang!! Can you believe it's August already?! Things are moving fast at YOUR  Universal Grille!!

The new menu is ready and it's great! We got tons of feedback on what to include and we listened!! You'll find some new healthier choices, a more international, "Universal" palate of flavors, the return  of a few old favs that people really seemed to want and some great new entree's!!

Construction is almost complete on the new "Cabaret Room" and it should make our live performances even more fun because you'll be much closer to the performers! We have lots of fun stuff planned for the future, so read on and get all the 411!!

Thanks for your interest in Universal Grille!!

Your Friend, Peter

I hope they bring back a lot of the old stuff.  My husband and I used to eat at Universal Grille almost every week since October.  Since they changed to the new menu, we have only been there twice.  We went there so often because you could get a great casual meal for under $10.  The new menu seemed much more formal, and my favorite entrees disappeared.  I hope they go back to some of the old stuff.

I totally agree xumelanie.  I think they went a little more upscale and not sure if it worked for a lot of people . . and they got rid of my favorite Cobb salad!

^ I'm surprised to hear that they no longer serve lunch.  I wonder if they could get a good lunch crowd again if they went back to their old menu.

New Graeter's store to open

August 3, 2007 | CINCINNATI ENQUIRER

Zaki Barakat, the franchisee for Graeter’s in Northern Kentucky, is set to open a new location Monday for the popular ice cream store at 342 Monmouth St.

See link above for article.

That is my guess but we asked the bartender that very thing and he said he didn't know if they were going to re-open for lunch.

This might be old news, but....

Cincinnati Steakhouse Becomes One-Of-A-Kind

Posted By: Ian Preuth

A one-of-a-kind Morton's Steakhouse is opening downtown.

The restaurant will be the first Morton's in the country to have windows.

Morton's new location is on the second floor of the Carew Tower, which looks over Fountain Square.

The restaurant opens on Monday.

People can head down to the restaurant around 1:30 p.m. for an opening day celebration, complete with free food.

This new Morton's will also feature a wine and martini bar.

with windows?!?....damn.

This might be old news, but....

Old news indeed, but it's alright.

I heard a rumor on Friday that the old Chili Company location in Oakley is going to become a Fatburger.  I did a google search today for "Fatburger & Cincinnati" and there are job postings on CareerBuilder for an Asst. Mgr for an Oakley location so it must be coming fairly soon.  I believe Willie Anderson of the Bengals is the owner.  According to his player page from the Bengals website:

"Owns an investment company called Think B.I.G. Inc., which owns rights to 20 Fatburger franchises to be built in the Cincinnati and Atlanta markets"

If you are not familiar with Fatburger, it is a west coast hamburger joint that not surprisingly makes some large burgers.  Hopefully they will keep late night hours to replace the post-bar void the Chili Company left.  I'm not big on chains, but their burgers are pretty good and I think this will be a decent add to the area.  http://www.fatburger.com/home/

Email I received from Jeff Ruby's mailing list. Check out the price tag on the event!

I firmly believe that Rudy Giuliani will be the next President of the United States of America. I also believe America will be safer in his hands.

That is why I am co-chairing a luncheon in his honor on Thursday, August

9th at my steakhouse in Cincinnati. Mayor Giuliani will be making remarks as well as taking questions from the audience. It will be a great opportunity for you to ask your questions of the next President of the United States of America. Please see attached invitation for further event details.

Recent polling shows Mayor Giuliani continues to be in a strong position to win the Republican nomination. A new ABC News/Washington Post poll has the Mayor at 37 percent of the vote; a 21 point lead ahead of his nearest competitor.

These encouraging poll numbers further prove that Rudy is in a strong position to win the Republican nomination. Although it is only 5 months till the first primary, absentee ballots can be cast as early as October to be counted in these states.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for your interest. I hope to see you on the 9th!

Jeff Ruby

I went to Fresh (4th and Walnut) for lunch today.  They have expanded their menu.  They now have baked potatoes, more choices of bread, and more side items, such as chips.  Some of the prices are slightly lower, too.  At least the price of my regular meal there has gone down slightly.  They also added Coca-Cola products.

^^Ruby is gonna freak out when the Republicans wake up and nominate Ron Paul.

Actually, republicans do not like RP.

When they wake up from the weird, feverish, codeine induced nightmare they are now suffering - they will understand what it is to be true Republicans and they will embrace Ron Paul's candidacy and his call for reason and liberty with open arms.

Quim, you know I jsut noticed that you said "wake up" ... my bad.

Yes, RP is what a president should be. The word "democrat" and "republican" no longer has meaning in todays world.

'Mr. Cincinnati' to leave council

Tarbell unsure what he'll do next

BY HOWARD WILKINSON AND JANE PRENDERGAST | [email protected] AND [email protected]

Cincinnati Vice Mayor Jim Tarbell - the most recognizable council member for his bald head, tuxedo on Opening Day and Oktoberfest lederhosen - said Tuesday he is resigning.

...

Many in Cincinnati political circles thought Tarbell would leave early after he found another job. He said he has not done that yet. He is selling Grammer's, the historic Over-the-Rhine restaurant he has owned since 1984. He is also the former owner of Arnold's Bar and Grill, downtown.

Grammer's will be sold by the end of the month to a development firm that "will keep up the tradition of the place," Tarbell said. "I didn't want it to become a fast-food joint or a Marathon station." The restaurant closed in 1992 except for private parties.

It's at the corner of Liberty and Walnut.  I got to go inside it last year during the Prohibition Resistance tour.  It would be great if it became a restaurant again.

New life for Grammer's?

The former Brickyard bar/restaurant in O'bryonville is being rehabbed and is looking for a new tenant!

83841373.jpg

wouldn't it be better to have the tenant prior to rehabbing?

I wouldn't imagine it being hard for them to market it in that location.  I'm sure they figure it's an easy sell.

I heard the Mythos next to Fountain Square is doing a promotional event tomorrow with Q102 where they will be handing out free gyros and diet pepsis from 11:30-2PM.  I checked the hours on the door and they will NOT be open on Saturday or Sunday.

That's a bummer about the lack of Saturday or Sunday hours.  It's sometimes hard to get excited about another Monday through Friday lunchtime place since there are so many options already.

It's a Sonic boom

BY POLLY CAMPBELL | CINCINNATI ENQUIRER

August 15, 2007

CINCINNATI - Expect to see more Sonic Drive-ins around Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

Drew Ritger, senior vice president of franchise development for the Oklahoma-based chain, says three franchise groups are each planning to open more Sonics.

SEe link above for article.

^ That's awesome. ;)

Well, they seem to be avoiding Cincinnati as much as possible.

Just curious, how does a fast food joint like this employ 100 people per store ?

100 is probably the amount of people they hire at the start.  Restaurants typically hire a glut of employees knowing that a good number will quit or not cut it through the start up.  Restaurants typically hire high turnover rates, and when you're first starting out it is especially more prevalent because all over your workers are new.

If they do have 100 employees even after startup then it would be attributed to the restaurant giving a lot of people a small amount of hours.  Most of the employees will be teenagers and part-time workers.  Therefore you will have virtually nobody working a full work week (in retail that's 35 or so hours...not 40).  So, that essentially mandates you to hire an abundance of workers to be able to properly staff yourself.

All in all...service based jobs are a sham when they are presented in this fashion.  Total wages paid or something of that nature would be a better gauge on its impact.

yeah, I know it's all part time, sub minimum wage, no benefits crap. The type of job growth the neocons love to brag about. But, even then, 100 people sounds like a bit of a stretch. Never thought of the over hiring strategy (and then boasting about it).

sigh

welcome to the 21st century.....

My hubby and I celebrated our 1 year anniversary with dinner at Mortons Sunday night.  I wanted to do a review of the new location and the restaurant.  This was my first visit to the restaurant, so I can't compare it to the previous, but I have to admit the interior decor is pretty cool.  One side of the entire dining room/bar area consists of windows that face Fountain Square and Vine Street.  We had requested table #12 as all of the articles about the opening had instructed to do, but it was occupied by another couple celebrating their anniversary.  Instead they must have put us at table #13.  We were practically sitting above the corner of Vine and 5th Street.  Mortons was running a special that I found out from their website where for $99 you could do a dinner for two.  Believe me it was plenty of food and we brought home leftovers.  The dinner consisted of bread, 2 salads, 2 filets, 2 seafood add-ons, a potato dish to share, a veggie dish to share, and two desserts.  I highly recommend if you are interested in checking out the restaurant but are concerned about the cost, this is the way to go!  All in all, the restaurant seems to have found itself in its new location and the Sunday night crowd seemed to prove this.  By 8PM I would say about 75% of the tables were occupied.  Kudos to Mortons for staying downtown and investing in our city.

Awesome to hear MrsAWeeks.  Glad you guys had a nice evening on your anniversary.  I wish that price included a bottle of wine though ;)

From the Foodie Blog on Cincinnati.Com..............

Restaurant week is coming...

Maybe you've heard about restaurant weeks in other cities. Restaurants unite and offer deals on (usually) prix fixe meals, at a heckuva good price.

Well, Cincinnati is getting a Restaurant Week, as Polly reported today:

"Greater Cincinnati Independents, a group of local restaurants, will

sponsor a Greater Cincinnati Restaurant Week Sept. 4-8.

The 25 restaurants

in the group will each offer a three-course prix fixe dinner for $25.07. (It's

25 restaurants, and the year is '07.)"

So far, these restaurants are participating: Andy's Mediterranean Grille, Behle Street Café, Bella Luna, Brown Dog Café, Daveed's at 934, deSha's American Tavern and Grille, Encore Bistro and Bar, The Grand Café, Hugo, Jean-Robert at Pigall's, Jimmy D's Steakhouse, Kona Bistro, Mesh, Mike & Jimmy's Chophouse Grille, Nicholson's, O'Bryon's Irish Pub, One Restaurant and Lounge, Pho Paris, Polo Grille, Pompilio's, The Pub at Crestview Hills, Red and Universal Grille.

We'll post more details as we know them, or you can check out the restaurant group's Web site. Make your reservations today!

Two questions.

Has anyone heard anything about Jeff Ruby's new concept "Bootsy Ruby's"?

Also, any word on this new rock cafe "Buddakhan"?

I think Buddakhan is supposed to be opening soon.  They will be serving American and Thai food.
