Good, if exceedingly boring news. :)

Hey if its good enough for Times Square...

McDonald's is also "good enough" for Times Square.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

and two Mcdonald's restaurants right next to each other are good enough for Easton

Great news for the reasons BallHatGuy named!

The Greaters stores in the Dayton area are run by the Columbus franchisee...

Who is running the Springboro store?

Ate lunch at the Green Papaya on the corner of Wasson and Paxton earlier in the week and I was very happy with the food.  Had one of the Bento Boxes but can't remember all of what was on it.  Very good sushi.  The box was around $10.  Good place for decent lunchtime Asian.

Looks like the "FRESH Deli" place is going to open soon. All of the paper is off the windows now. The location in on the corner of 4th and Walnut St. It looks really cool and reminds me of the color scheme in Vinyl.

Also, it looks like Guido's is opening up a pizza place in the location on the corner of Main St. and 9th (?). Not sure if this is affiliated with the Guido's in Mt. Adams though.

^it is, Guido's corner tap... maybe thats the name.

that is the location of what was (for a week at least) news cafe, which was the same ownership as guido's/mangia osteria in mt. adams.

until someone tries something truely unique or of exceptionally high quality, that space is and will remain lava (rip) to me.

Yea, but Guidos is a decent pizza place. Maybe they will give away free pizza at halftime of the bengals games like they do in the Mt. Adams location.

"FRESH" deli opened today. Show your support and urge them to stay open late!

^Is that on Main st. right down from the Aronoff?

It's on Walnut Street.

We stopped there on Saturday.  Unfortunately, it wasn't very crowded.  However, there was a sign saying that they have free food during the half-time of Bengal's games.

I tried to eat at "Fresh" this evening but they were closed.

^ I ate there for lunch today.

They were slammed! They ran out of some of the meet, so they gave the sandwiches they had away for free! Awesome service and great food! The staff was very friendly and apologetic. I guess they did better than they thought they would. Everything is also organic.

^ Absolutely shitty.  I loved Bella.

You can't be serious...

^I'm sorry, can't be serious about what specifically?  I didn't follow you...

Bella closing... Wouldn't have seen that coming.

I was concerned after Watson Brothers closed.

Does anyone know if SouthFood the "Urban Soul Food" restaurant is open at the Levee?  I have a friend coming in town this weekend from Atlanta, AKA the Dirty South and I was trying to think of a trendy place to take her.  I would like to stick to the Ohio side of the River but I need some suggestions.  She works at a restaurant so she is a tough person to impress.  I don't want to take her to a chain or anything.  Also, it needs to be pretty reasonable in price so Jeff Ruby's, Jean Roberts, etc are out.  Has anyone been to Honey or the Sturkey's restaurants?  I have been to Vinyl and thought it was ok.  Any help would be appreciated.

^Honey is very good, but the better choice in Northside is Slims.  It is like $28 for a 3 course meal, but you can BYOB for no extra charge so it is actually pretty reasonable.  Another great choice for the atmosphere is Arnolds on 8th street.  For Indian, you could go with cumin in... i guess that is Hyde Park or Teak in Mt. Adams for thai.  I don't know your price range, but arnold is probably the cheapest of the ones i mentioned.

I have been very impressed by the food and service every time I have gone to Honey.  Not too bad on the wallet either!

Haven't been to Honey, but I've heard nothing but raves about it.

And Arnold's has always had surprisingly good food.  Though that's mostly because you expect really typical bar food, and it exceeds those expectations - not because it'll blow you away of its own accord.

*********

EDIT: Regarding Arnold's, I should amend that - they do have food that's surprisingly good of its own accord sometimes.  Like one time, we got Goat Stroganoff.  WTF?  Goat Frickin' Stroganoff?  But it was really tasty - the goat really went well in the stroganoff.  A daring choice, no doubt, and one they pulled off.  Gotta give them big props for that.  And eating it while listening to live bluegrass?  Hard to top that evening...

*********

I've also always heard good things about Slim's, for that Northside-y feel, but haven't been there...

Pomodori's wood fired pizza's and pasta dishes are reasonably priced and very, very tasty...another good choice...

And obviously, there's Cincinnati Chili at the parlor of your choice - unique and tasty.  Then there's also Zip's for a Girth Burger - very nice stuff in a fun setting for cheap...

That's what comes to mind for me first...

Pomodori's is delish.

I think with the Fountain Square activities downtown on Saturday night that I will take her to The Universal Grille.  I have not been since it changed from Hamburger Mary's.  Thanks for the suggestions though.  I haven't been to a lot of the places mentioned so I will definitely have to check them out.

Just went to the Universal Grill last night.  They have mini-burgers for an appetizer - three mini-hamburgers, on a roll, with cheese, a slice of tomato, a piece of lettuce, and some yummy sauce...flawless bar food!  Their other offerings looked great too...very good choice!

JUST FYI...Cincinnati magazine's November Issue is called "The New Downtown" and is focusing on all of the great things that are ongoing and people making the choice to live downtown.  They are having a kickoff celebration for the issue at Universal Grille on October 27th.  I received an advertisement for the event at the DRC meeting last night with RSVP info on it.  I will try to pass it along if anyone is interested in attending.

^Cool....I like it...THE NEW DOWNTOWN!!!!!

It's the 'NATI biotches!!!

Former Poppies to resurface on the river

Cincinnati Business Courier - 5:54 PM EDT Wednesday

The operator of the former Poppies deli, a popular eatery known for sandwiches such as the Riki Tiki Turkey and the Ring Dang Doo, is planning to open in a new space on the other side of town.

This is great news (I'm a Rikki Tikki FREAK)!!! ... but, on PRW??? I don't know about this?

I thought the location was a little suspect as well.

Actually, there's probably good money to be made over the next couple of years feeding workers for the Edge and One River Plaza condominium construction sites.

The owners of Nicola's are opening Via Vitte in the Fountain Square Restaurant

^ Yeah, I mentioned that in the Fountain Sq thread.

I hear Javier's on court street is moving to the old Busken Bakery location on 8th and Walnut. The court street area is nice but they will have a lot more room for seating at the new place.

Quite a bit of shuffling going on with Cincinnati restaurants.  I guess the jury is still out on whether this is a good thing or not.

McCormick's and Schmidt's is coming along nicely.  I really like the new fountain square.

I stopped by "Fresh" for lunch today.  Everything was very tatsy, but I have to admit going into sticker shock at the price.  A sandwich, bottled water, and chips and hummus totaled out at over $12 (there's no options for any kind of chips without the hummus or guacamole).

It seems a bit high to me.

Yeah, it seems like hummus is always much more expensive than you'd expect...any of the Mediterranean places, it's always pricey.  You'd think, it's a staple of 2nd World Cuisine, how can it not be cheap?  But it ain't...

A big, quality sandwich with fresh ingredients, and some good hummus, for $12?  Yeah, I'd rather pay less than $12, and you could find a good lunch for half that price, but I guess it's not crazy for a frou-frou place...

arnolds always has a $4.25 lunch special and a 7oz lunch beer for another $1.25

Where is the Ethiopean restaurant someone told me about in P-Ridge? I lived there 3 years and have never heard of it. He said on Montgomery Road I'm wondering if its where Manhattan West was? Never had Ethiopean food...i bet its worth checking out.

It is on Montgomery, near Pleasant Ridge Chili.  It's on the opposite side of the street.  I forget the name of it, though.

^east african cafe.  Excellent Ethiopian food for the price.  The veggie combo is almost enough for two people and it costs $9.  The place is BYOB with no corkage fee.  I think they are closed on mondays and sundays, but this place has better food than places I have been to in DC, Atlanta, and Harlem.  Get the veggie combo and maybe a doro wat.

Cool but do you know if its where the Manhattan West was? I have a hard time conceptualizing where this place is and I use to go to PR Chili all the damn time.

Oh yeah and I've said it a million times but everyone here has to go to Pleasant Ridge Chili and try the gravy and cheese fries atleast once!!! You can even get a half order as like a side dish.

It's not where Manhattan West was, but just down from there.  It is in a house on the opposite side of the street from PRC.
