July 1, 200915 yr Give Chalk, a Wade restaurant, in Covington a try. Mark Bodenstein, former owner of NuVo, is now executive chief. I've eaten there twice in the last week or so. Food was fantastic.
July 1, 200915 yr Speaking of Chalk. There was an article in CinWeekly, maybe early June, about their Sunday brunch and it sounded pretty good. We tried going on Sunday and it was closed. Anyone know if they're not going to be doing brunch anymore? The bright spot was that we ended up going across the street to Keystone and they had the "Inn the Wood" potato crisp which was killer!

July 4, 200915 yr I wonder how successful this business will be. It's across the street from a surface lot covering nearly one whole block. Retail is a different animal from an eatery. Perhaps that's what they're saying, when they report a *need* for a restaurant in that area, since there are virtually none within the four-block area. I'm skeptical but I'm definitely supportive of the reuse of that building, which is west of the Walgreens.

July 4, 200915 yr I ate there when it was Queen of Sheba...quite enjoyed it. I am glad someone is doing something on that frontage, as the facade is trashed. Also the photography studio on the corner recently vacated for new digs in City Beat's building, so it's good to keep some life on that block other than Walgreen's (along with the residential, of course, which is decent on that block, as noted above).

July 6, 200915 yr The place never interested me. It looked too off-putting from the outside, expecially compared to Nada which has the whole outdoor vibe going-on. I remember once waiting in Nada for 40 minutes to sit. We looked across the street to Oceanaire, and couldn't see a soul in the place.

July 7, 200915 yr The Reserve at NOTL also closed, another victim of the economy. I think it's victim of NOTL. I loved that place when it was downtown on 4th & Race - good & random. I do not think the owner wanted to leave downtown; the lease was yanked by the building's owner.

He got a voicemail telling him that he no longer was employed and thanking him for his service after the news came out on the enquirer's website. Him and his girlfriend just moved back to Cincinnati from New York and they were finally settling in... now he is unemployed.

Jin Kim, owner of Asian restaurants in Dayton and Symmes Township, will open an 80-90 seat restaurant with sushi bar at the building, confirmed Christi Laduca, property manager for 580 owner BPG Properties. Cuba Cafe opened at 630 Madison Avenue and will, unsurprisingly, feature Cuban cuisine. The intimate cafe seats 20 to 25 people and is located in the heart of Covington - only a short walk from the popular Greenup Street and Main Strasse commercial districts. Cuban-born restaurant owner, Willie Rodriguez, came to the United States in 1980 when he was six during the Mariel Boatlift and came directly to the Cincinnati area where his grandmother had been living since the 1960s. Rodriguez says that the plan was to start small. "We can have our own little niche here since there's nothing like us nearby." The Cuban dishes will include "homemade rice, beans and a variety of meats." The always popular Cuban sandwiches will also grace the menu with pulled pork and ham. Cuba Cafe will also serve a variety of homemade pastries "filled with fruit, fruit and cream cheese, coconut and flan." Early morning goers, or those just looking for a jolt, will be able to enjoy the notoriously strong Cuban coffee called "bustelo" or "cafe con leche" which has proven to be extremely popular thus far according to Rodriguez. He also offers bestelo which is served in a tiny shot glass and delivers "a jolt of espresso" for just 85 cents. The restaurant is open Monday through Saturday for lunch and early dinner. Rodriguez's mother is also on hand and serves as the main cook of the Cuban dishes served in family-style portions made fresh daily. The family operation also includes Rodriguez's sister who serves up the dishes that go for the typical lunch price of $5 to $8. The restaurant features dine-in and carry-out options and encourages those with large orders to fax them ahead at (859) 261-7600. Major credit cards are accepted and the restaurant is closed on Sundays. Cuba Cafe is open Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm, and on Saturday from 10am to 5pm. July 14, 200915 yr I've been to Cuba Cafe twice for lunch and enjoyed it. The owner and his sister both are extremely friendly and more than willing to explain everything that they have to customers. I think their their prices are pretty reasonable and their cuban sandwich and beans & rice are good. The only drawback is that their space is in the lobby of a building so it limits the menu, but they do have a pretty sizeable seating area. I'll be in Miami this weekend and even though Cuba Cafe wouldn't stand up to the places down there, considering your other options for Cuban cusine in Northern KY and the surrounding areas...I'm glad to have it :-D

A move like this is at the heart of what American capitalism has become, and it's the fault of the government for giving out handouts in the first place. Golden Lamb (of course) didn't threaten to tear down their building or move, but it's the basic implication that the city wants/needs them there more than they want/need to be there. It's taking advantage of the precedent that has, sadly, been set by the system.

Dojo Gelato will open within the Market House and will feature handcrafted Italian-style ice creams and sorbettos. Dojo owner, Michael Christner says that they adhere to a few basic principles in order to create the finest product. They make their gelato and sorbetto fresh and in small runs with no artificial anything; they use only milk, pure cane sugar, and cream for their gelato; their sorbettos only contain fruit, pure cane sugar, and water; and they refuse to use artificial preservatives, unnatural stabilizers, powders or gels. Christner also states that they only use hormone free dairy products and use choice ingredients from local farmers and purveyors when possible. Dojo Gelato will also offer milkshakes, floats, affogato (gelato with espresso), smoothies, coffee and Italian sodas. Once open the store will employ 2 part-time with plans to utilize the empowerment program for future employment needs. The process to get the space ready for Dojo took several months from space selection to build out. The Market House space was actually one of two potential locations that Christner was eyeing. Beig a Northside resident he naturally looked at Hamilton Avenue and had trouble finding any suitable locations, his next logical spot was Findlay Market where he and his wife regularly shop. Christner is exited though to be a part of the Over-the-Rhine community and fill a desired niche within Findlay Market. “Cincinnati is very welcoming to first time business owners,” says Christner who came from the much more competitive Austin, Texas market. Christner went on to explain how gelato prep kitchens are often referred to as “laboratories” and that the Dojo name is reflective of the Asian culture meaning of place where you go to hone your craft. Dojo’s laboratory will feature a “super-fresh product” that only has a four to five day shelf life and will utilize fresh produce from Findlay Market vendors. As a result the dozen or so flavors will rotate on a monthly basis depending on what is in season with the exception of a few standard favorites like vanilla, chocolate chip and chocolate neutella. “Cincinnati has had a definitive love for ice cream since way back when,” says Christner who hopes to recreate that ice cream social atmosphere. “In America there is a tendency to make a generic style of ice cream out of a bag. I’m real excited about using local merchants, fresh produce and creating a product made from scratch.” Prices will range from $3.50 to $4.50 and the shop will be open during regular Findlay Market business hours (T-F, 9-6; Sat, 8-6; Sun 10-4).
