September 17, 201014 yr the grill is overly generic. dt indianapolis here we come You see bars called "The Office" sometimes. I can think of one in Columbus and one in Huntington. These days, though, not as many people work in offices. I'd simply call my bar "Work". "Sorry honey, I'll be at Work late." "I always get hammered at Work." "No, Ocifer, I just left Work." "I get laid every time I go to Work." "Man, I can't wait to go to Work!"
September 18, 201014 yr Topper's Pizza to open in Clifton ...selling pizza, subs, quesadillas and more, mostly to college students. That’s their market, rather than the families that most national pizza chains are going for. They do a lot of delivery, on college student hours, from 10:30 a.m. until 3 a.m. every day. There are also seats and carry-out, but it’s not meant to be mostly dine-in. They don’t sell beer. "It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton
September 19, 201014 yr I only went to Bootsy's once, on a bar crawl. The place didn't have much at all to do with Bootsy Collins. They didn't play his music or music from his era, and I think it's safe to say that the staff didn't on their free time. Those kinds of themed places aren't about the food, but the theme wasn't strong. It felt like the generic theming of the "singles bar" on a Carnival cruise ship. Then there was the whole problem with the place being on the upper floor. There was no way to know if people were in there or if the crowd or music was friendly to your tastes without "committing" to walking up those steps. They tried to make it look friendly on the outside but it simply did not draw you in. I don't think Bootsy Collins is anything close to a household name, so it was never going to draw tourists the way a bar themed after BB King (I think there's one in Memphis) would draw people in.
September 19, 201014 yr Also, I'd bet this lawsuit is a factor: http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20100916/NEWS010702/9170329/Woman-who-lost-eye-sues-Bootsy-s
September 20, 201014 yr Just heard a rumor that Servatti will open a pastry shop in the 5/3 Building lobby on the southeast corner (behind Graters). Target is Spring 2011. It will not serve sandwiches due to the building's lease agreement with Potbelly's. Servatii Pastry shop coming to Fountain Square Servatii Pastry Shop and Deli has signed a 1,750 square-foot lease for space on Fountain Square, Fifth Third Bank announced Monday. The store will be located in the southeast section of the Fifth Third Center tower, on the corner of Walnut and Fifth streets. A grand opening for the new store, which will feature Servatii baked goods and a European-style cafe, is planned for early 2011, according to a news release. September 23, 201014 yr What we could use are more Asian restaurants. Besides sushi and takeout Chinese everywhere, there's only a few Thai, Vietnamese, and Korean places. Downtown you have Sung Korean Bistro, you have Riverside Korean in Covington, Korea House in Harper's Point, Saya Korea BBQ up in Dayton and Chung Kiwha Korean BBQ in Florence. There is a Thai place downtown but it isn't open for dinner but Teak Thai is right in Mt. Adams and there are tons of Thai places throughout the suburbs to name them all. Oh I’ve been to all the Korean restaurants in town (minus the one in Dayton), that’s why I’m saying we could use more! I won’t rest until I can find some live octopus somewhere. There is a new Korean restaurant in Mason. It is called SuRa Korean Cuisine and located on Mason-Montgomery Road.
September 23, 201014 yr Jason, do you know where? There is a decent Korean restaurant at 11371 Montgomery (The Korea House), but this would be a new addition to try out...
September 23, 201014 yr I just read a blog post about that place. It is at 7876 Mason Montgomery. Here's the post, btw, should anyone care to read it: http://www.onecleanplate.com/2010/09/sura-korean-cuisine/
October 12, 201014 yr Anyone know why the Mythos in the Chiquita Building hasn't reopened after their June "vacation"? Both the 4th & Walnut and the Vine St location have Closed signs up now... "It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton
October 12, 201014 yr Just found this from 10/01 Greek Restaurants Could Close Downtown Locations Economy, Debt Could Chase Eateries Out Of Business CINCINNATI -- A downtown dining mainstay may be closing its doors. George Psihountakis has been operating Mythos restaurants in the area since 1981, but he said the economy has forced him to think about closing all of his downtown eateries. The cost of running all three restaurants under a deep recession and deeper debt has Psihountakis and his partners considering all options. Investor Angelo Gallina said the company owes too much in debt. "It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton
October 27, 201014 yr I always thought they expanded too quickly. Within 5 years, they went from having the space next to Holiday House in Newport to 3 locations in Downtown Cincinnati. Not wise in this economic climate.
November 9, 201014 yr To the surprise of absolutely no one, Mythos has closed the remaining downtown locations...
November 13, 201014 yr ^Does that mean Mythos is totally out of business or is there another location I'm unaware of? I still miss having it in Newport.
November 14, 201014 yr ^Totally out of business. "It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton
November 18, 201014 yr I got messaged basically the same version by three people (on FB), and basically Cafe de Wheels pulled up and people thought they were going to serve food. They were given some very rude commentary instead. I wish I had more details, because it is disappointing either way.
November 18, 201014 yr A new mobile food truck parking area will be opened Monday at the foot of the Purple People Bridge! How much foot traffic is in the area during the day?
November 19, 201014 yr I am with 100 other parents at Fairview German Language School that are camping out waiting to enroll their children when the Cafe de Wheels truck pulls up. Everyone was excited as they were hoping for hot food. The owner does not serve anyone food but, instead goes into a foul tirade as to how the parents should get out of his neighborhood and how the city does not even let the homeless do this. Sorry, Cafe De Wheels, you will NEVER see another penny from me. via http://www.yelp.com/biz/cafe-de-wheels-cincinnati-5

November 19, 201014 yr Here is the text from Yelp, which correlates with what 3 others wrote to me: "I am with 100 other parents at Fairview German Language School that are camping out waiting to enroll their children when the Cafe de Wheels truck pulls up. Everyone was excited as they were hoping for hot food. The owner does not serve anyone food but, instead goes into a foul tirade as to how the parents should get out of his neighborhood and how the city does not even let the homeless do this." Apparently, Cafe de Wheels did come back and apologize and tried to offer food, but the parents refused. Sorry, didn't see the text in quotes above.
November 19, 201014 yr I was at the campout. The first part about Cafe de Wheels berating the parents is true. The second part about the parents Monday night refusing the chili and hot cider is not. Many didn't eat the chili, but the cider went very quickly.
November 19, 201014 yr Why was the Cafe de Wheels truck yelling at potential customers? All we seem to be getting here is bits and pieces of information, but no whole story. People are camping out in front of Fairview German Language School. --> Cafe de Wheels shows up. --> Owner/worker of Cafe de Wheels starts yelling at people to get out of his neighborhood. --> Cafe de Wheels comes back to offer food to the people they just yelled at. ^That literally makes no sense, what so ever.
November 19, 201014 yr It didn't make any sense to me, either, but he arrived on a mission to tell all of us that we were a nuisance and that the city would never allow the homeless to do this, so why should parents? I guess he thought better of his actions a couple of days later, and came back to make up-regardless, it was a stupid thing to do and really angered a lot of people.
November 20, 201014 yr It's pretty stupid, but not offensive enough to get me to join a boycott. Basically, the guy holds a political view that two friends can disagree about and easily remain friends. He acted on it in a really rude way. Then apparently he apologized for it. I hope the apology was sincere, and not just meant to avoid loss of business. I hope the situation can be resolved for all those involved, after some time to cool off and maybe some dialogue.
November 20, 201014 yr What is the view point? Like what is the owner of Cafe de Wheels even mad about?
November 20, 201014 yr ^ I think that people with money are held to a different standard than those without. People looking to enroll their kids in the school are allowed to camp out in public, whereas homeless people (who would presumably benefit more from being allowed to spend the night in such a place) would not be allowed. This is just my assumption.
November 21, 201014 yr A new mobile food truck parking area will be opened Monday at the foot of the Purple People Bridge! How much foot traffic is in the area during the day? Not sure, but I love this idea. We don't have enough food trucks in the region, and they always seem to serve great stuff.
November 21, 201014 yr The vacant storefront next to the Proud Rooster on Ludlow has a building permit posted for conversion from retail to restaurant space. It looks like it's the same guy who owns Ambar and a few other area restaurants (Jagde Singh) so I'm assuming we can expect some kind of Indian restaurant...which to be honest kind of sucks. I like Indian food, but there is definitely a lack of variety on Ludlow now.

I like Indian food, but there is definitely a lack of variety on Ludlow now. Plus there is another Indian restaurant literally right next door. I thought it was ridiculous when Apna moved in, making it the third Indian restaurant in the space of a single block. If a fourth moves in, you could start marketing Ludlow Avenue to tourists as some kind of Indian eatery freakshow! haha
November 22, 201014 yr ^- Cincinnati's mini Devon Ave - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devon_Avenue_(Chicago). Maybe it should be known as little India, it would make Cincy seem more cosmopolitan.
November 22, 201014 yr If they added a Southern Indian restaurant that would be nice. What they really need is an American Indian restaurant- squash, venison, passenger pigeon.

They'd need some Indian specialty retail (no, Pangaea and Toko Baru and whatever that other place is don't cut it, it'd have to be exclusively indian-themed)
November 23, 201014 yr Someone should bring this up to the Clifton neighborhood association. It seems the restaurateurs have already created the brand. Now the marketing needs to commence. Put up signs on that block. Get blurbs into guide books. Create a page on the Cincinnati USA site.
November 23, 201014 yr They'd need some Indian specialty retail (no, Pangaea and Toko Baru and whatever that other place is don't cut it, it'd have to be exclusively indian-themed) A Sari Shop would probably do the trick. Or continuing the Devon analogy, a cheap electronics shop
