Creamy Whip must be to Cincinnati what treelawn is to Cleveland.

Wait, I lived in Cincy for almost 10 years and used treelawn many times...were people completely unaware of what I was talking about and just too polite to say anything?

I have never heard of a "treelawn". Wikipedia has a nice list of synonyms: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Road_verge#Terminology

Yeah, "treelawn" and "devil strip" are Cleveland and Akron words, respectively. Practically no one knows what the heck you're talking about outside the respective metros, as I found out multiple times after moving to Cincinnati.

Taste of Belgium owner says he was forced out of Hyde Park Farmers' Market

Liz Stites, a longtime volunteer with the farmers' market, said the market is committed to supporting small farmers and artisans, and Taste of Belgium didn't fit that mission anymore.

"I think it's more of a story about the success of Taste of Belgium – they've grown from a small local artisan to a large business organization with six locations," she said. "They're really growing, and the marketplace's focus is truly to provide a community market mostly for small, local, healthy, sustainable farmers and a handful of other artisan providers."

This illustrates the big problem with community groups that want to ban chains from opening in their neighborhood. So many Cincinnati restaurants opened with a single location and, due to their popularity, were able to grow into a chain — Taste of Belgium, Senate, Bakersfield, The Eagle, Tom+Chee, A Tavola, Currito, etc. At what point does the local chain become "too big" and cause the neighborhood to turn their back on them?

If you want to run a "curated" flea market or farmers market and not allow chains, that's one thing. Or if a developer like 3CDC decides to do so on their own, that's also fine. But if a neighborhood group wants to tell developers that they're not allowed to lease their retail spaces to chains, that's not OK.

I hope their price point is right - Cincinnati really needs some more options for cheap Korean food.  There's a deli in Carew Tower (behind the elevators) that sells a couple Korean dishes for $7 or $8, I think, but aside from that I can't think of anywhere that has meals for below $12 or so. Sung was always just a few more dollars than I was willing to spend on a lunch.

I welcome Haru and think it will be successful. Just wish it hadn't been at the expense of Istanbul cafe, which was very good (even though the decor was equally lousy for dinner). We need a good downtown Lebanese/middle eastern restaurant that goes beyond falafel. I long for the place that used to be in the north-west corner of the Terrace Hotel building.

I'm enjoying some lunch from Sunny Deli right now. They are rarely busy; hope they are able to stay in business.

Greater Cincinnati restaurant named most iconic in Ohio

A Warren County restaurant that bills itself as Ohio's oldest continually operating business was named the most iconic restaurant in the state by an online food and entertainment site.

The Golden Lamb, founded in 1803 as an inn and tavern along the National Road stage coach line, took top honors from Thrillist.com, which ranked the most iconic restaurant in each state and the District of Columbia. To qualify as iconic, a restaurant must have been in business for more than 30 years and "still be a crowd favorite," according the website.

There is work happening on the former Joe's Diner. Someone on Facebook said they thought it would be run by the Cheapside owners, which would make since because I've heard that their Main Street storefront isn't happening anymore. Someone else said it was the same owners as the old Joe's, Mixx, Treehouse Bar, Cameo, etc. So I'm not sure what's true and maybe people are just guessing.

Jen and Leah (and their food) are awesome and while I'm sad to see them shut down the restaurant, I know they are doing this with as much intention as they started it. They both left positions as honors student advisors at UC to pursue this dream partly because they were so inspired by the things their students were doing.

Just overheard some guy at work say there was an event he heard about called the Taste of Belgium.  Well there is a restaurant by that name -- 3 or 4 of them, actually.  Guy was like nah, I heard about this on the radio.  They had some sort of food event called the Taste of Belgium.

Eli's BBQ and Lang Thang Group restaurateurs team for new eatery

CINCINNATI -- Two popular Cincinnati restaurant groups, the Lang Thang Group and Eli’s BBQ, are teaming up to open the Hi-Mark, a new roadhouse at 3229 Riverside Drive in East End.

The Hi-Mark will host its official grand opening Aug. 13 but will begin its slow rollout on July 27 with limited hours.

Eli’s BBQ, with locations on Riverside Drive and at Findlay Market, has won national accolades for its barbecue. Lang Thang Group is the company behind Pho Lang Thang and Quan Hapa in Over-the-Rhine. Pho Lang Thang is a popular spot for steaming bowls of pho, bánh mì sandwiches and other Vietnamese street eats, and Quan Hapa is known for its contemporary menu of Asian street food.

Not unlike the vibe at Eli’s BBQ just down the street on Riverside Drive, the Hi-Mark aims to be a comfortable, no-frills establishment.

“It’s more of a neighborhood bar,” said Elias Leisring, owner of Eli’s BBQ.

Insiders can learn more about this new joint venture from the owners of Eli's BBQ and Pho Lang Thang and Quan Hapa.
