^Second floor retail has the reputation of being very poor performing. I'll be curious how this turns out.

^^"The restaurant will have 175 seats inside and about 60 seats on an outdoor patio that overlooks the Collection's retail plaza."

They forgot to mention the monstrous parking lot directly next to this "plaza".

Gold Star Chili acquires Tom + Chee

Tom + Chee, the Cincinnati-based grilled cheese restaurant chain, has been acquired by Gold Star Chili. The local chili company bought the assets of Tom + Chee from their lender, finalizing the deal on Sept. 20.

The deal brings together two Cincinnati brands and is the first acquisition in Gold Star's growth strategy. Roger David, CEO of Gold Star, said he sees a lot of growth in the grilled cheese fast-casual chain.

"I've been impressed at how much energy there is around the brand, from franchisees, customers, and from employees, too," he said. "That makes this exciting."

^In the article, the founders state that the help from Gold Star on the real estate front is important. I tend to agree. I don't know the demo of all of their locations, but some Tom Chees were in the dullest strip malls in the dullest, least-adventurous suburbs that are mostly about getting children fed inexpensively. A lot of the locations weren't befitting of the brand. Gold Star is way better with proper locations for their brand. I've never worked anywhere in Cincinnati or Dayton where a Gold Star wasn't RIGHT THERE -- as in Gold Star knows to be near clusters of workplaces with that brand.

I think Tom + Chee has a good product and brand but was way overhyped due to being on Shark Tank. They tried to expand way too far, too fast. I could see them building some co-branded Gold Star / Tom + Chee stores, or possibly just "featuring" some Tom + Chee items on the menu at Gold Star locations. (There was a co-branded Gold Star / Great Steak and Potato Company somewhere on the west side, but it turned into just a regular Gold Star at some point.) This might make Gold Star a more attractive lunch option for groups of people where someone in the group doesn't like Cincinnati chili.

Former Boca executive chef opening ‘diner’ in OTR

The former executive chef of Boca Restaurant Group is partnering with his wife to open their take on a diner in Over-the-Rhine.

Jeremy and Bridget Lieb have signed a long-term lease for about 4,900 square feet of space at Cincinnati Center City Development Corp.’s 15th & Vine project. The as-of-yet-unnamed restaurant would anchor the retail portion of the $19.5 million office and commercial development. They anticipate opening the restaurant in March 2018.

Nostalgia is in: '90s-inspired Asian restaurant coming downtown

A Court Street restaurant space that has hosted multiple Asian fusion concepts over the last four years is transforming itself yet again.

The space at 29 E. Court St., which formerly housed Asian barbecue fusion restaurant Huit and Chino-Latino concept Lalo, will become Dope! Dumpling and Noodle Shop, as soon as this weekend.

Partner Tobias Harris said the small restaurant and its layout lends itself to use as a lab to test new restaurant concepts. He points to his group – consisting of himself, Eduardo Reyes and Trang Vo – validating its Lalo concept there and moving it to a larger spot at 709 Main St. downtown.

-Friedrich Nietzsche

Oh, so Asian gets to have restaurant decades other than the '50s but nothing else does.

"The restaurant improvements are being financed by historic tax credits, funding from the city of Cincinnati and bank financing."

ZOMG! I wonder if the anti-Mahogany's crowd is going to attack these two restaurants as well. For some reason I doubt it...

They're not going to attack things that go on in the neighborhoods.

They're not going to attack things that go on in the neighborhoods.

Is The Banks, or the Central Business District, not a neighborhood?

^ There is a large portion of Cincinnati residents who do not view the urban core neighborhoods as actual neighborhoods. In 2013, one of Cranley's campaign ads basically said, "we're investing too much in Downtown, we need to invest in the neighborhoods instead."

They say that in Columbus now as well. Downtown, the Arena District, the Short North, campus proper and the Brewery District are not "the neighborhoods", a term that our DINO mayoral candidates (Ginther and Scott) imported from Cincinnati during the 2015 election to use in their rhetoric.

Kroger's first restaurant is now open

Kroger Co. has opened its first-ever standalone restaurant after briefly delaying it earlier this month.

Cincinnati-based Kroger (NYSE: KR), the nation's largest supermarket operator, opened its Kitchen 1883 at its Union, Ky., Union Marketplace location on Nov. 7. It was originally scheduled to open Nov. 6, but it was delayed by construction.

That's a great addition as Mazunte is awesome.  Will be curious to see where exactly they're opening downtown.

Mazunte Centro coming to downtown at "618 Main St". ... but 618 Main St is a parking lot. So, I thought maybe it's a typo and they meant 718 Main St... but that was the Dennison  :'(

Regardless of where it goes, Mazunte will be a nice addition to downtown!

If this is basically going to be a fancy Cane's (which it sounds like it will be), I won't have any complaints.

“To an Ohio resident - wherever he lives - some other part of his state seems unreal.”

The Eagle will now occupy the majority of that block!

The Eagle II: Fancy Cane's

That's a great idea, and with a current lack of quick food options in OTR it should make an absolute killing.

Think both ideas are great.  Making the eagle bigger is obviously smart and the chicken finger place could also do well.  Now we just need to get some more bars open on Vine to keep the crowd there past 11.  If they ever turn 1410 Vine back into the beer hall that is was in the past the chicken finger place could make a killing.

Taco Bell Cantina downtown will supposedly open on Saturday. See you all there.

OTR's first poke restaurant set to open

Over-the-Rhine's first restaurant devoted entirely to the Hawaiian dish poke is set to open its doors.

Poke Hut at 1509 Race St. is hosting its first soft opening on Nov. 18. It's believed to be the first restaurant in the region focused exclusively on poke. It's a project from Sally Lin, an R&D engineer at Procter & Gamble, and Baret Kilbacak, a lead manufacturing systems engineer at GE Aviation, who also are engaged to each other.

It's here: Taco Bell Cantina now open downtown

After more than a year in waiting, Taco Bell's Cantina – a new twist on the fast food restaurant aimed at millennials – is now open downtown.

The Taco Bell Cantina in the AT580 Building on East Sixth Street, between Main and Walnut streets, officially opened 7 a..m. today. The space hasn't been occupied in years, since the building was redeveloped. It is downtown's first fast food restaurant since Wendy's closed in June 2016 after 37 years on East Fourth Street.

I ... did not realize that Picnic & Pantry (didn't they change their name to Bottle & Basket?) had closed.

^I didn't realize that either. They apparently moved into the CAC, but I thought they were just opening a second location. What a weird transition that business has been through since Molly Wellmann bought it.

The CAC restaurant was called Bottle & Basket after Wellmann took it over from Collective Espresso, but then it changed to a Melt.

I also haven’t heard anything about “New Neon’s” recently. Last I heard they were looking at various locations but that was about a year ago.

I also vaguely remember hearing a rumor about something that would be opening in the former Japp’s Annex space but I honestly can’t remember what it is right now.

It’s still huge and growing in LA. I love poke and hesitate to call it a trend, unless sushi is also a trend. Glad to see Cincy getting a spot, and especially glad for more cheap and quick food options coming to OTR. These types of places are real assets for the residents of the neighborhood, as they cater to more of the get and go model rather than the fancier sit down places that cater more to visitors.

The advantages in LA is that

A) There is a decent sized hawaiian/Japanese population

B) The seafood is fresh

I'm sure there will be Poke places that will hang around elsewhere it just doesn't have those advantages.  Though I've heard Hawaiian food critics criticize how Poke is everywhere else as not being quite right.  It would be like adding ketchup to a chicago dog, or having a Cincy Chili parlor that sold Detroit style coneys.

Also poke tends to be midpriced, not cheap, but its frequently served in a fast casual kind of environment.

Condado's is really good and popular in Columbus.  This should do well at the Banks.

I've never had J Social's food but I know they have tacos.  They make their money as a bar though.  Condado will be one of the best taco places in the city, not just a bar that happens to sell tacos.  Plus they'll have the built in hotel guests which will help with business.
