Popular Covington Hangout "Jillian's" Closes

Without any warning, the Covington nightclub and entertainment complex Jillian's has closed.

Jillian's was open for six years and had a restaurant, a few bars, games and a bowling alley.

This is the statement on the web site:

      Dear Valued Patrons,

On Thursday, July 27th, 2006, Jillian’s of Covington, closed their doors after eight years as one of the Cincinnati markets premier entertainment venues.

Jillian’s would like to sincerely thank all of their customers who helped to make the club a local landmark.

For additional information, please contact JBC Entertainment at (502) 638-9008.

      Sincerely,

      Jillian’s Management

It's unclear how many people lost their jobs with the closing.

huh...I thought that Covington was becoming an entertainment destination, ehh I guess things aren't as great in Nky as what one is led to believe. :-o

For future reference, please be sure to indicate the location that your post refers to.

I just about threw up in my mouth a little bit because from the original title it looked like Jillians as a chain was history, not just one location. And dear god, if they close the Jillians in Youngstown - I'll have nowhere to get Great Lakes Brewing's Christmas Ale on tap during the holidays!!!

I just about threw up in my mouth a little bit

charming

This doesn't surprise me.

So Youngstown can keep their Jullian's, but Cincy can't? ;)

I watched this story on the 12:00 news, it was a total blindside to the employees and vendors.  Food and supplies were showing up and being turned away, the tables were set for lunch.  Nice company, doesn't even have the balls to give you a week's notice!

Exactly.^

They're like "yeah we're still making phone calls to the employees to let them know". I bet the place was completely mismanaged. That sucks. Just one more thing attributed to our diminishing nightlife scene. Jillian's was pretty freaking cool... I've had a few birthday parties there.

it's alright, Cincinnati is still the nation's #1 city for for nightlife.  (??????)

Jillian's was a joke anyway, although I did have a few fun nights there when I was 19 with a fake.

Can you imagine finding out that you don't have a job by watching a news report?  That would be terrible!

I liked Jillian's.  I remember years ago they had a great "lady's night" promotion on Saturdays.  You'd pay $5 and not have to buy a single drink.

Sounds like they took a risk and it didn't pay off.....

Cincinnati Enquirer, 6/4/06

Jillian's has completed a $275,000 overhaul of its Covington location.

The entertainment-restaurant chain spent the money on improvements to its 12,000-square-foot game room. The room now offers 28 "redemption" games that dispense tickets that can be redeemed for prizes. It also has 16 video games. A unit of JBC Entertainment Corp. of Louisville, Jillian's said it plans to improve seven of its 20 outlets in the next three years.

It would be cool if someone else picked it up right away, Dave and Buster's maybe?  I believe their only location is in Tri-County, and it would be a perfect fit, at least for the stuff on the first two floors, I don't know if D&B's had much in the way of drinking/dancing.

Remember too, that the building was first called BrewWorks and was only open for a year or two before they folded and Jillian's came in.

Things come and go.  I loved the bowling alley there.  I've had lots of good times there.  The place is huge - bowling, 5 stories of bars, game rooms, etc... It looked a little worn last time I was there.  I predict it will sit for a while.  That is a huge undertaking with Newport being nearby.  Newport killed it.  No critical mass near Jillians.  Prediction - will be turned into medical offices for the new medical complex being built at 12th Street and I-75.

I sense this is the beginning of a slow death for Covington.

Really though, what stays around for the long run? hardly anything. People get sick of seeing the same thing and tend to not go anymore. I give NOTL 5 more years.

I's it a demise? Or is it the prerequisit of the rebirth of the NKY riverfront? Hmm?      ...?

Speaking of NOTL....

Jillian's still thinks positive

Says building was underused, may blossom

COVINGTON - The owner of the building that housed Jillian's, the entertainment complex that closed Wednesday night, says he'll try to sell it as a mixed-use development site.

Ken Lewis, who owns the Party Source in Bellevue, said the closing is no surprise given the decline in sales at Jillian's.

It is a bad location. NOTL has proven that critical mass is important.  There is something for everyone there.  I went to NOTL last weekend you couldn't find a parking spot for miles around.  Traffic jammed up on the highway to get to it.  Critical mass.  Covington does not have critical mass.  No one wants 115,000 square feet on 12th Street in Covington.  I predict office or condos.

The Jillian's in Raleigh also closed.  I don't know if it's related.  Maybe we'll see them all fall like dominoes.

Yung seeks to raze Jillian's buildings

Owner asks to raze section

By Mike Rutledge • [email protected] • February 18, 2009

COVINGTON - Hotel and casino operator Bill Yung has given up on converting the former Bavarian Brewery Co. into a casino, at least for now.

But a Yung representative Tuesday asked Covington officials to let him tear down two buildings that are part of the property, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Can anyone provide a Google Maps loc of this?

This sucks.

This sucks.

Yeah.  I'm not sure why the owner insists on razing one of only two buildings on the site of historical significance.  There are something like 7 total buildings there, and the other 5 would be fine.

Site around Jillian's being cleared

By Scott Wartman, Kentucky Enquirer, October 6, 2009

COVINGTON - Demolition around the vacant Jillian's building started Tuesday.

The future of the former nightclub and brewery off Interstate 75, however, has yet to be decided.

It'd be unfortunate for that building to be razed...

"It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton

Not all. The historical structures are remaining.

Some people just don't give a crap about historical significance.  Its unfortunate because I used to go to Jillians and it's an awesome building.

Again, from the article --

"The main building of what once housed the old Bavarian Brewing Co. will remain intact and is protected by the city's development plan as a historic building.

Residents, historic preservationists and the city have worked to ensure the old brewery building isn't torn down."

Given the history of this redevelopment project I would not be shocked if there was some "accident" that occurred and either damaged the old brewery building in a way to force its demolition, or in a way that took it down on its own.

^My thoughts exactly.
