It's a weird spot. They're open on random days it feels like, but when they are open they somehow are busy.

From their website, they seem to be open M-F from 11am - 2pm.

Turning this space into an extension of the convention center is an example of making something out of nothing.

Sure it's been trial and error getting this building to have a purpose but if it leads to larger or simply even more convention activity then it will be an asset and not the liability it was for too long.

Well, that's certainly something that happened.

Is the Global Center Expansion Complete? Can someone take a recent picture?

no, still a lot of work being done

Honestly, it doesn't look that much different today than the June 16 picture above....

But the Standard Bldg in that photo certainly looks taller and skinner than it does today.

Can someone post a rendering or photo of the statues for those of us who are not Crain's subscribers?  Thank you.

The Crain's article does not show the statues.

Remember: It's the Year of the Snake

Deming's sculptures were originally planned to be part of a plaza between The Rock Hall and The GLSC. That was abandoned. It appears this is the new ideal location they seek.   The prototype Superman statue was displayed at The Cleveland Public Library and I found a photo of the proposed "Lois Lane" Joanne Siegel, Jerry Siege,l and Joe Shuster.   These were planned back in 2015

I wish they could move the location to the Mall location as if Superman was taking off from The Convention Center's elevated Lakeside Entrance towards the lake. Disperse the other statues at the other end of The Mall witnessing the takeoff

Its truly a dynamic and eye-catching statue to see in person. I was surprised and impressed when I came across it on the second floor, and in the right location at a larger scale I could see it having a large tourism draw.

Oops on the quote but I just realized I took pics myself and I think it's worth it to see the statue from many angles. I like the overall form of the cape but it might benefit from some added billowing/rippling

Agree with you @Pleco.  To me,  the cape makes it look like a large Manta Ray is chasing Superman.

BTW, we need to change the name of this thread. It's no longer the Global Center for Health Innovations. It's just the Huntington Convention Center.

Thankfully, too!  That name was just bloat.

Technically "Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland"

First, a Superman statue in Downtown Cleveland is LONG overdue!!!!

Second. I agree, I don't think the medical mart/convention center area is the correct place for the superman statue. I think on The Mall where you mentioned would be a good spot, my only concern is would it clash with the "Statue of eternal life" or whatever its called on the other end? Public Square could be cool but IDK if it fits what they're trying to do there(do they even know what their trying to do there?), it could also get lost in the shuffle a little and I think it needs it's own spot.

I think what could possibly be the best spot would be in the center of  Mall-C!  This would give the statue it's own place/plaza; if he is facing the water then the whole city and all the towers would be your backdrop when taking a picture with the him, and you'd see it directly out front of the convention center front doors.

Superman statue at the red X, playgrounds at the yellow X's and sidewalks leading to the statue in pink from all sides.

Third, I don't prefer the design of statue as shown. I'd rather have one of the three options shown below as I think they're the most notable Superman poses; taking off into the sky, landing after flight, or flying across the sky.

Also, I think it should be made out of stainless STEEL (man of steel?), just like the Chicago bean. I think it would be a draw as big or bigger than Cloud Gate.

Because of all the above I don't think the Med-Mart portion of the Convention center is the proper place, there wouldn't be enough proper space for tourist to get good pics. Outside of the front door of the Convention Center on Mall-C, however, would be a lot better.  Activating the malls above and in front of the convention center needs to happen, and this is a great way to do it. Then placing the other statues around the city would be great too; statue of the family on The Mall looking towards the Mall-C takeoff, a Daily Planet globe on Public Square, maybe a big Fortress Of Solitude crystalized rock on the PNC plaza, standalone illuminated Superman 'S' emblem/badge at US Bank Plaza to go along with all the lights.

These are my thoughts..... and leave the the Med-Mart Convention Center expansion as just a nice new building 🙂

Maybe @Geowizicalcan do a cool design and @KJP can put something on twitter/X with his following, and then all of us go tag the Downtown Cleveland Alliance/council members/Mayor... etc and make sure this is thought through fully and done properly.... and NOT at the Med-Mart Convention Center entrance.

@NR  I like what you had to say. I also wonder if it is best to hold off and incorporate these sculptures onto the proposed Lakefront Land Bridge.

Basically agree, but if they ever do close the square to traffic entirely there are two very logical statue locations where Superior enters Public Square. That would look great and have a lot of symmetry with the North South Statues. Not sure if a superman statue is the vibe they're going for, but that is another question.

The medical mart is a weird location, agreed. But I don't like letting the perfect be the enemy of the good, so I say put them somewhere.

The best location is absolutely the gap in the land bridge letting light in to the convention center. Put Superman flying in the air in the middle of this gap. Keep the support post as small as possible to maintain the illusion, it would look really cool.

Edit: I'd use the third pose above flying East to West. I kind of like the stainless steel idea.

the malls would be a good spot for a sculpture/statue garden downtown. get a couple dozen sculptures along the outer sidewalks

I still think they should set up a giant motor on top of the Ohio Bell building and tether a Superman statue to it and make it fly around the building in circles.  Like a G.I. Joe from a ceiling fan.

edit- or zip line him back and forth down E. 9th St.

The interior snapshots above from @GISguy show how our expanding Huntington C.C. sports new suspended escalators. They give off vibes of Seattle's new vertically oriented convention center.

This is a wise reuse of the Cleveland space. Moving conventioneers in and out of multistory meeting rooms is aided by this compact setup. It  means attendees won't have to sprawl too far from their hotels or the urban core (restaurants & shopping) to get in and out of meeting sessions.   - Nice!

Is there an underground tunnel from this space to the Hilton hotel?

At least through the main part of the convention center, which is connected to the hotel. I don't know if there is a direct connection.

I wonder @GISguyhow noisy these escalators will be during operation.   Hopefully, someone designed for this aspect. Thanks for peek preview.

So not direct, but you go down the escalator into a large area (that usually has art up and is open daily) that have medium rooms off to each side. Keep walking and you come to a T with the Hilton to the left and main convention center area to the right. All said it's maybe a ten min walk... Maybe.

I agree that a Superman statue would fit better on either Mall B or C or even the future Land Bridge. But I don't like the one proposed statue that has been around about 5 years now. I see the statue as the more traditional Superman pose with the cape flying in the wind. Situated somewhere so people can stand next to it for a photo with the city in the background.

there is a small replica of the proposed statue in the second floor of the main library branch.

The plaza looks like it would be too small for a photo op type sculpture

Thanks @Oldmanladyluck for the photo.  Does anyone know what the final finish is going to be for this addition?  I am confused on the beige panelling that is being installed.  While I am happy that the facility is becoming a part of the convention center, this addition doesn't blend in very well with the original architecture. Also, I hope the mechanical system at the northwest corner has plans to be hidden . It also seems like it could interfere with noise and be visible when an event is held on the outdoor terrace.

The beige panels look to be insulation -- mineral wool/Roxul.

wow $2.5M for this art installation was much more than I expected.

Combining this with the original Convention Center what is the total square footage?

17 hours ago, Mov2Ohio said:

With the Med Marts 250,000 sf added to the "original" convention center, it is now about 700,000sf, which is closer to Indy's 933k sf, but still way smaller than  Columbus's 1.8million SF.

Continuous open floor space for the larger conventions is still way smaller.

One of the reasons why these facilities have gotten so big is not to accommodate giant events, it’s to have the ability to host multiple events simultaneously. Many times groups are looking at similar dates especially in the busy summer months.

Using Google-fu, old outdated websites still list it as having over a million sq ft of event space. IX's own website says 530,000.

When they took the ferris wheel out, that's basically where they cut the building in half with a giant wall.
