I vote we go full Colosses of Rhodes and build the world's biggest statue ever made over the 2 breakwater/pierhead lighthouses as ships enter the harbor...

From cleveland.com:

Cleveland's bid to land a Medical Mart has drawn endorsements from more than three dozen Cuyahoga County mayors.

The supporters, including Democrats and Republicans, plan to identify themselves at a news conference Thursday.

By Wednesday, the list of mayors covered 40 communities, or just over two-thirds of Cuyahoga's 59 cities and villages. And the Mayors and City Managers Association expects the list to grow.

If you would like to encourage the other mayors to support the Medical Mart, here is a list of contact info for the remaining 19:

City of Brooklyn - Mayor Kenneth Patton - [email protected]

Not really, cox business accounts could be managing their email system.

When we bought AOL, they had a business AOL and there were lots of company's that we had management agreements with.

^i just think that any respectable organization should maintain email address at a domain akin to their organization.

there is a lot of crabbing from local bloggers (i know, who blogs anymore?) about the mm on bfd. like, who needs it? hospital folks get sales reps to come to them  (in fact they said the clinic has a dedicated office to manage the daily onslaught of sales people). also, hospitals tend to order all new stuff straight from the factory. someone said these markets are like flea markets, that the chicago and miami marts had like 4 or 5 manufacturers and the rest were second-hand mom and pop vendors.

hmmmm.

http://www.brewedfreshdaily.com/

I can't read local blogs anymore. It's like a big pack of wolves with an axe to grind. It's not objective analysis.

^^ Interesting. In the six years that I lived in Miami, I never heard of the Miami Medical Mart. I guess I missed that large Miami Convention Center that is attached to it as well.

by the way, i'm not "shooting the messenger."  :-D

mrnyc...you know how people talk, I bet NONE of those people have been to a medical mart.

The maimi mart by the airport is very seedy.  its not a mart in the same leaugue as the chicago, dallas, Los angeles, atlanta marts.

I get the feeling the miami mart is a left over as more people prefer to have events/conventions on miami beach.  So instead of closing the miami mart, it turned into a swamp meet/flea market kind of thing.

Sheraton Miami Mart? Definitly not a place one would expect MTS to visit! :-o

it was work and thats where the showcase was.  Why I'll never know.

Sometimes I have to go places I don't want to - like the south!  :-)

1 week to go

more "potential" locations, more consulting fees.

SO there are more consultants cunsulting cunsultants and more advisors advising other advisors.

Way off topic (forgive me), but out of curiosity, is that the official mythology now at Time Warner, that Time Warner bought AOL?  Or just casual typing?

No, we describe it as "a merger".  Although, AOL bought Time Warner.

Thanks- was just funny seeing it written that way (though easy to understand given the AOL brand now).

Went to a meeting this morning where Hagan and Fred Nance talked about the need of the Medical Mart to the arts and culture sector. One of the most interesting factoids I heard, and one I had not heard before, is that collectively, Cleveland hospitals are the largest consumers of medical supplies in the country. Nance explained that this is the reason that so many buyers already visit Cleveland ... to see the items in action before making major purchases (i.e. equipment that sometimes figures in the several hundreds of thousands). Pretty compelling, I thought.

Do tell: What's a medical mart got to do with arts and culture?

So if/when MM opens, do the sales they make generate sales tax that will help close the increase sooner.

Do tell: What's a medical mart got to do with arts and culture?

I don't know that it has a direct correlation, although our arts and culture organizations are a) a key amenity used to woo convention organizers and b) are one of the major catalysts for increasing expenditures of conventioneers (particularly because once you get a conventioneer to visit an arts and culture organization, they are much more likely to explore adjacent retail and restaurants, much the same as they would following a sporting event). And of course, arts and culture organizations enjoy the prospect of bringing in new visitors and thus new revenue opportunities.

They did mention that they would be working to try to have arts and culture tie-ins for hotel packages, etc., and Merchandise Mart apparently has a lot of background in developing arts and culture packaging/branding for visitors to their facilities, including organizing a special event called Artopolis (http://www.artropolischicago.com/).

I think mainly, however, this is just the result of Cleveland's arts and culture sector being very proactive in civic affairs and organizing about issues regardless of how they relate to arts and culture. Arts and culture organizations were also heavily involved in supporting recent health and human service levies.

So if/when MM opens, do the sales they make generate sales tax that will help close the increase sooner.

I was wondering this myself - do sales get made directly out of the facility or through the respective home offices of the showroom owners? It's an interesting question.

Did anyone see any pro/anti signature gatherings this past weekend?

4 days left!

Did anyone see any pro/anti signature gatherings this past weekend?

4 days left!

they were outside of browns stadium for saturday nights game.

yeah, the first I want to do when going towards a football stadium is sign a petition, not drink a beer.

They were outside the West Side Market on friday afternoon, and I impolitely declined those pencilnecks three different times.  Seriously fellas, fully buttoned polo shirts tucked into pleated cotton dockers?  Anybody seen these cats?

Yeah, 80s republicans!  These folks were obviously from the (westside) 'burbs.   ha ha haha ha ha ha ha (demonic laughter)

I am starting to get nervous about them getting it.  I don't think they would have been out in such force this weekend if they didn't have a chance.  The best thing that could have happened however is that the Indians are on an 11 game road trip.  GO TRIBE, way to get out of Cleveland at the right time.

THey have my John Hancock.

^So what you're saying is you are not in favor of them building the medical Mart.

If they want a medical mart, let the medical mart people build it

^^local governments don't have the luxury of deficit spending

Anybody have any idea on when we would know if they got the required signatures?  My guess is it would take at least the weekend to just count them, let alone find out if all the signatures are legit.  Is this going to be another Broward County dimpled chad event?

The certification process should take a couple of weeks.  I doubt they will get it.  They had petitions to fix school funding so it wasn't so heavy on property tax, they couldn't even get that, it was a good idea and that is ALL people ever complain about.  People, sadly, are generally lazy, I will be shocked if they get it...

The only petitions that ever get signed are to bring back bad tv shows on the internet...

Well, they are not giving up...don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing

Go egg them, I will pay you back for the eggs

From putitontheballot.com

Putitontheballot.com canvassers will be at the Cleveland West Side Market (click link for map and info) at the rear entrance adjacent to the public parking lot from 8:30 to Noon on Wednesday, August 22, 2007.

If you would like to sign the sales tax referendum petition, please come by.

I think it's a good thing. I'm all for people fighting for a cause they believe in. Now, I personally don't agree with what they're trying to accomplish, but I applaud them for taking action and doing something about it.

Email from the MM people:

Thank you for your support regarding the Medical Mart and Convention Center project.

There is now conversation regarding whether the petitions are due Friday at 4:30pm or next Monday.  This means that the weekend could be available for petitioners to collect additional signatures.

If you are available to assist, and feel comfortable doing so, please contact us at the CVB to attend a local event (Slavic Village Harvest Fest, Latino Fest at the Rock Hall), or spend some time at the West Side Market, etc. simply speaking with people about the benefits of this project to our community.  We can provide you with flyers, buttons and talking points or pair you up with a CVB employee.

If you are interested, please let us know ASAP by contacting Adam Solloway at 216.875.6625 or [email protected]

this is sounding a bit too serious for my taste. It makes me wonder if they are close. I agree with the other posts about it being unlikely that they could get enough VALID signatures. I've learned to never underestimate an enemy though. They better not extend the deadline to Monday.

Even better, we can assist by going to all these local events with baseball bats and beat the hell out of anybody looking to sign the petition. :-D

Are you my cousin?  Thats the same thing he said!  You folks from Cleveland Heights are so violent!

I think these guys are out of the game. They effectively lost last Sunday because of the weather. If signature end's tomorrow, game over.

^How can you be so sure?  Do you have an inside source?  I hope you're right though.

For the record, we at UrbanOhio.com never advocate violence or harassment... now being ornery and/or obstinate? Absolutely! :-D

Is this about something I said?

I don't. I just know from past experience with drives I've been on, that weather is a killer. There's a reason, why the commissioners decided to raise the tax when they did. People have other diversions generally, and don't focus on issues at this time of the year.

:wtf:

^I believe zippo is making reference to the fact that it's back to school time, vacation time, etc.  People probably do less newspaper reading and news wtching in the summer months then in the bad weather months.

^ That can be a double edged sword, especially when someone with a petition asks you to sign to make sure county commissioners can not raise taxes without a vote.

I think people are less likely to sign anything these days though...especially from some stranger in street clothes that is not affiliated with any particular company or institution.  Unless they are giving away free t-shirts of coarse.

But thats not what the petition is for and it should be

I don't understand why they are going after the tax and not after the commisioner's right to increase it.  There was already a law that passed that allowed the commisioners to raise taxes.  They should be petitioning again that law, not against a tax that the law allowed them to raise.
