May 18, 200916 yr Author Looks like MMPI is looking for a convention sales director as well as a medical trade show director
May 18, 200916 yr The folks in Nashville are correct about one thing: “there will be only one international medical trade center in the United States" While I don't put it past them to be able to capitalize on their succesful hospitals (Vanderbilt, Baptist) to attract some attention, I just don't see them being able to compete with Cleveland's base of both hospitals and private businesses (Codonics, Philips, MIMVista, etc.). Also, they plan on opening as early as 2010 and they are just now looking at their potential locations...?!
May 18, 200916 yr Vanderbilt is a good hospital, but its not anything special. I guess that they are banking on the presence of HCA (largest operator of hospitals in the country) as the draw. Other than that, Nashville is nothing special medically. HCA is not about the medicine or cutting edge therapies, it is about operating run-of-the-mill hospitals and clinics around the country. Nashville is looking to build a new convention center downtown. This is where the 1.5 million sq ft number comes from in their proposal. They're proposing a similar medmart/convention facility tie-in like MMPI is envisioning for Cleveland. One problem with Nashville's proposal is the presence of Opryland. All the large conventions go to this isolated facility. If Nashville had built Opryland on the river where the Titans' stadium is located, then they'd have a much more vibrant downtown.
May 18, 200916 yr Here's the Cleveland.com article, it sounds like the Nashville site has no financing or a site selection. Cleveland's medical mart project faces competition from Nashville, Tenn. May 18, 200916 yr ^Some people just can't accept the fact that this project WILL happen... we're missing, what, a city-council vote? Forget the naysayers. What excites me about this project is the potential to lure businesses from outside the region to Cleveland. If this were to occur, I think the public's investment will be well worth it. As for Nashville... if they can get it built WITHOUT a site chosen (and the politics involved), along with not having a dedicated funding source, and have it all done by 2010... I would applaud them. That isn't to say that they can't do it, but it just seem unreasonable with all the funding and site selection criteria involved. We aren't the only city with developers holding onto property downtown, and I would bet that there would be a developer or two who would fight tooth and nail to land their site selection. Let's not forget that MM said they would be able to use the Auditorium in the short term. I would expect that puts us ahead of Nashville's "timeline".
May 20, 200916 yr Jimmy D says they want MM to front Lakeside and allow the County to move it's offices( City Council Meeting). I wonder if this was the scam to begin with. The County will wind up paying MILLIONS to someone ( FCE) leasing office space downtown for the next 20 years. As far a St.Clair goes, who would want to build a hotel facing another across the street? Maybe put a multi-story parking lot on St. Clair & Ontario across from Marriott?

Lots of cities (I can name dozens- NYC, BOS, PHL, DC, ATL, MIA, DAL, STL, ATL) have hotels facing or across from other. Why do think that is a bad thing.
May 20, 200916 yr Not saying it's a bad thing, but if I were the property owners it would be a parking lot. It would generate great cash income with the least investment.

May 20, 200916 yr Not saying it's a bad thing, but if I were the property owners it would be a parking lot. It would generate great cash income with the least investment. No disrespect, but we're not talking about our personal needs/wants. If a hotel is built there, that is THE BEST interest of the city, we could see a hotel with ground floor restaurant and retail, with rooms directly above. It's a "win-win" because, we use existing parking facilities without having to build more garages. The new hotel can contract with the existing parking garages in the vicinity. Those garages expand their customer base.

May 20, 200916 yr Not saying it's a bad thing, but if I were the property owners it would be a parking lot. It would generate great cash income with the least investment. Are you kidding? If i were the owner I would take a hotel or office/residential building any day over a parking lot across from me--particularly one with street level retail with pedestrian activity. all parking should be underground or in garages on the streets (not avenues).
May 20, 200916 yr As far a St.Clair goes, who would want to build a hotel facing another across the street? Sometimes I don't know if I'm in Cleveland, TN or Cleveland, OH! I'm sorry but are we going to object the whole MM/CC project too b/c it might generate traffic and impede on our congestion free city?! :? We know most of our "leaders" lack vision, but UO users?

May 21, 200916 yr What is amazing is the comments under both articles, Cleveland and Nashville, apparently the people that read these city's newspapers have polar views about their city.
May 21, 200916 yr I think that it's more of a reflection of who feels compelled to actually write a post. Just like when having a voluntary survey, you usually only get responses from people who feel passionately about the subject one way or another.
May 26, 200916 yr Is there a diagram showing where the components of the Convention Center will be placed? I think the main show floor could be underground with no issues. You would want attention focused on the exhibits, not the view. If it is to have no windows, it doesn't matter whether it is above ground or underground. I like the idea of having four or five stories of meeting rooms of various sizes along the western edge of the development, between Ontario and Franz Pastorius, with lots of angled glass overlooking the mall, assuming the existing buildings are to be cleared. (I am not sure where the hotel, if planned, would go). On the east side, the old Music Hall could seat a few thousand for talks and presentations. After sitting with 7000 people on the flat floor of the Skyline Ballroom at McCormick Place, I could go for something theater style (slanted). I wonder how the development will treat Ontario. Will it turn its back thinking the Justice Center might discomfit the attendees? I guess we'll see as the project progresses. Let us pray that they get this done and done right, and lol, may I live to see it. By the way, I believe Emdeon, health care IT part of WebMD is in Nashville or at least has a big presence there, for what its worth. IIRC, the average January high temperature in Nashville is 49F. I wish it were that here in C-town. Anyway just got back from Ottawa Canada today, and needed to put in my two cents (3 cents Canadian)
May 26, 200916 yr They have a partnership with WebMD and perhaps have some sort of minority stake in the company, but that's about as far as "owning" that they likely go. Unless they have a significant stake in HLTH corp.
May 28, 200916 yr County in talks to buy three parcels for medical mart building Posted by Jim Nichols/Plain Dealer Reporter May 27, 2009 20:51PM CLEVELAND -- Cuyahoga County has opened talks with the owners of three properties where the county hopes to build the medical mart building that will pair with a new convention center downtown, County Administrator James McCafferty said Wednesday. McCafferty also welcomed news that the county's tentative partner in the development, Merchandise Mart Properties Inc., has begun recruiting medical mart and convention center marketing and sales executives. May 28, 200916 yr Greener was making the argument that the only logical land use for those properties was a parking garage and not a hotel which others were talking about a few days ago. That's my guess anyway.
May 28, 200916 yr "[glow=red,2,300]One[/glow] real-estate developer recently noted privately that the three parcels could have substantial value as a development site for parking because of the shortage of spaces connected to the convention center." It may have "value" but it would be a sh*tty use of land. And they will still need a convention hotel. I highly doubt we're going to see a big parking garage at that parcel.
May 28, 200916 yr I'm assuming mixed-use is out of the question/too expensive? - First floor retail/showrooms/hotel lobby - 4-6 stories of parking - Hotel on top of parking. Isn't that Urban Design 101??
May 28, 200916 yr Isn't that Urban Design 101?? It is, but I doubt our county commissioners took that class. Advanced racketeering? 'Nother story altogether.... "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

It would not be the most ascetically pleasing use of the land but I don't think Marriott would be pleased to see a hotel there. People will be approaching from the south not the north so to me that would be the logical entrance. All hotels are south of the site. Upon exiting you want to send people into the City not into the lake. From a property owners point of view they would be looking at return on investment. Strictly business.
May 29, 200916 yr Now I'm obviously overlooking something when I ask this, but with land slighty scarse downtown why wouldnt they use a high rise convention center like New York was planning on?
May 29, 200916 yr Now I'm obviously overlooking something when I ask this, but with land slighty scarse downtown why wouldnt they use a high rise convention center like New York was planning on? High rise convention center??? What are you talking about? Where did you see NY building a high rise convention center? No convention could be in a high rise - cost effectively.
May 29, 200916 yr • 113 St. Clair, a four-story office building by that name and at that address, one door east of the Sportsman. Its lot takes up 134 feet of frontage on St. Clair and covers 26,388 square feet. Market value for tax purposes: $6.79 million. Maybe I'm crazy, but isn't that more like an 8 story building? Not that it really matters... but let's get our facts straight!

May 29, 200916 yr Author Floods7 Try looking up Litt's articles in this tread and it should give you some insight on convention center layouts. In short, exhibit halls need to be long, tall, and windowless and columnless. So a highrise being verticle would not help since they need to be horizontal. (type Litt into the search box when you are in this thread)

I am sure he was thinking of the proposed medical mart in NYC, which is, as designed, would be around 60 stories. SuperKid, that is NOT a convention center. There would be permanent showrooms just like our medical mart, but there would also be offices for medical products suppliers on the upper floors.

May 29, 200916 yr a portion of an article from clevedotcom Engines rev up for medical mart and campaign fundraising: Today's City Hall rundown by Henry J. May 29, 200916 yr wow, what sound reasoning. nashville is too broke to help finance the project, but it will get done because they are somehow less incompetent?! I am sure there is some hack writer in nashville who thinks the opposite is true, but okay sure, I will bite. Cleveland's mart may not be online until 2024. typical. if we write it, it must be true.
May 29, 200916 yr At least Mr. Kotz doesn't hold a grudge about losing his job here. Also, I didn't realize that Cleveland was so flush with cash.
