Wow, moving right along! I will be able to take more pictures from the Key Club and Marriott Saturday and Sunday, hopefully more progress by then.

^It's completely down to the ground this morning.  I was pretty surprised to see that when I drove by this morning.  Progress!

I was driving east on St. Clair last night about 10:30 pm and as I hit Ontario I saw a bright light to my left and heard and saw a big demo machine, and the first thought that hit me was..."oh hell, what are they tearing down now that does not need to be torn down"   I then realized they were demoing the ugly Justice Center parking garage as part of the MM and I felt much better. At that point it looked as thought 20% of the garage was gone.

 

I drove by yesterday and it was already a pile of rubble, being broken up & loaded out

So just to be clear, the building at 113 St. Clair, looks to be an 8 story building, and the entire parking garage at the NE corner of St. Clair & Ontario is going to be demo'd to make way for the new med mart building?

For those who asked how many are and will be working on this project, that article provided an answer....

 

About 270 workers from different trades are on site now.

Does anyone else find it kind of depressing that the news centered around a bunch of construction workers that get to get paid, and completely seemed to ignore the high-paying and advanced degrees this project will bring to the city? Not to be a downer or anything, but we should stop glorifying the lower jobs and celebrate the creation of high-paying and specialized jobs in this city.

I don't think it's depressing at all that an article was written about the construction jobs generated by this project.  What's depressing is that so many people think that the livelihoods of people who don't have advanced degrees aren't worth sh-t.

^^First...huh?  Second...construction jobs are some of the highest paid around (an electrician on this project will make more than $40.00 an hour), require years of training and are coveted.  One of the reasons the economy is in the dumps is the lack of substantial commercial construction.  The focus of the article was an increase in construction work in Cleveland.

I understand all that. It wasn't meant to be a slight against construction workers at all. I just feel that lately our city has started to lose quite a bit white collar jobs and it would be nice to hear about growth in that area of jobs as well. Having too much of one or the other can't be good for a city's growth.

This is really going to be a boost for our economy when you add up the FEB, MedMart, & Casino projects, nearly $2 billion in construction, that's alot of guys making good money, upgrading their homes, buying cars, spending $$$ that wasn't in the pipeline before.  Construction projects are proven to be the fastest way to put money back on the street & in people's pockets from a stimulus perspective.

Pic from today.  You can see the parking garage on Ontario is gone and they have erected a base of operations on Mall B that resembles a large greenhouse.  One question, though.... is taller, thinner structure its own separate building or is it part of the County Annex or is it maybe part of 113 St. Clair?  Will it come down?  FWIW, looks like the Sportsman is next.

Wow that deck came down fast. It wasn't much, admittedly. Some bad-ass construction worker probably sneezed and brought the fucker down. Adios!

It will be fun watching this go up over the next 2+ years. For all of the doomsayers this is a very exciting time for Cleveland. With the amount of real estate that this project involves, this is definitely a face-changer. It is so much more than your ordinary run of the mill Convention Center. Along with this project, the Casino, FEB, and the Innerbelt bridge, I am really proud of Cleveland right now. Oh and btw way the greenhouse structure on the mall is for the groundbreaking ceremonies. And yes it needs a construction cam.

I'm more excited about all the projects along Euclid than I am about the Inner Belt bridge. But, sadly, many Greater Clevelanders will probably consider that a more impactful/more visible sign of local progress.

The bridge is what it is, I am still not happy about it. To me the bigger impact to the city will be the eventual reconstruction of the "Trench". But unfortunately that is years away.

His point is valid. His tone (at least how I read it) implied a lack of faith in MMPI to accomplish the goal, however. Maybe I'm too sensitive.

So do we think MMPI will announce signed lease tenants or just their list of companies who have signed a letter of intent?

The founders of MedCity used to work for the PD. They've done a very good job of starting up a new online publication and have grown it quite well to cover other markets. It is a nice success story of how two downsized reporters have created and grown a new business in our region.

^Good for them.  Still don't like the tone of the article.  An attempt to make a very valid point in a needlessly negative tone, especially at the point where there is actually nothing to report.  In a couple of days he would have actually have known the tenat list and perhaps would have been more justified in expressing an opinion, and then in a skeptical tone if he liked or felt it neccessary.

So did Frank come out of hiding for today's ceremony?

Just returned from groundbreaking. New Governor sounded like he was supportive. Kennedy, rah,rah and announced a nice line up of tenants. I told a acquaintance "Let's stop shoveling the political BS and let these guys get to work."
