To get jobs, areas develop industry hubs in emerging fields

CLEVELAND — Alex Nudelman, a strapping 49-year-old, confidently pushes buttons on a computer-controlled milling machine and suggests it's ready to sculpt a small piece of metal.

His instructor stops him, noting Nudelman has not programmed in all the tools needed to shape the metal block.

A journeyman autoworker who was laid off in 2009, Nudelman is taking a community college class here so he can work on the more sophisticated gear powering the region's growing cluster of medical device makers. If all goes well, he may soon be churning out spinal implants instead of seat brackets.

Health care-focused furniture company lands in Nashville medical mart

The Nashville medical mart has a signed five-year lease with another anchor tenant, publicly traded furniture maker Steelcase's (NYSE:SCS) health care-focused brand Nurture.  Nurture plans to occupy up to 4,000 square feet of space in the Nashville Medical Trade Center, which is slated for a 2013 opening, according to a report in he Tennessean.

Nonetheless, the property developer behind the Nashville medical mart, Dallas-based Market Center Management, has a long way to go. Market Center has said it needs to lease 60 percent of the approximately 1 million square feet of showroom space before it can secure the financing to begin construction of the 11-story mart, and it's nowhere near close to that number, which raises doubts as to whether the projected 2013 opening date is still realistic.

Bummer  :yap:

Has anyone seen/heard the latest regarding tenants for our MM/CC. Wondering if they've made a lot of progress now that construction has tamped up.

A lease signed prior to a financing commitment & actual construction completion will have timetables regarding those items and a tenant escape clause if they are not met.

By the way, Steelcase is a great tenant to land, but 4,000 SF does not an "anchor tenant" make.

^Seriously.  They need the equivalent of 150 Steelcases to get to their minimum sf for financing.  Still, it's mildly annoying that that their totally hypothetical project seems to announce better tenants than our actually-under-construction project.

why is Nashville's design so much bigger than Cleveland's?  Im assuming they don't have a convention center attached.

I feel like we will expand ours if we need to. But I wish we could actually sign some tenants like Nashville has been doing.

There's some discussion about this upthread, but the Nashville MM would be built within the existing Nashville convention center after it's replaced by a new one currently under construction, so it's a very different starting point.  That said, it is indeed interesting how different their business plans.

Saw the MM progress on 90 yesterday afternoon. Damn they are working fast.

You mean the CC progress?  I thought it was still going to be awhile until they dug out the short part of the "L" that is going under the MM and will connect the two facilities.  Regardless, where on 90 can you see the construction site?

Not to mess with you, but I would assume you meant "Saw the CC progress on 2 yesterday afternoon."

Ah, you're probably right.

Workers drive in second caisson for medical mart, 63 more to go

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Crews this week drove in the second caisson to support Cuyahoga County's new underground convention center.

The caissons -- 4 feet in diameter -- reach 150 feet below Cleveland's downtown mall, where since January hundreds of workers have been building an L-shaped convention center and a connected, four-story showplace for medical technology on the northeast corner of St. Clair Avenue and Ontario Street. The 1-million-square-foot complex, costing taxpayers $465 million, is to open in 2013.

The PD seems to have the same problem differentiating between the Convention Center and Medical Mart.....

Cuyahoga County releases new images of medical mart and convention center, plus a first look at expansion

It's never too soon to think about the future.

Plans for the $465 million project to build a medical mart and a new convention center in downtown Cleveland are ready for final review Thursday and Friday by the Downtown and Flats Cleveland Design Review Committee and City Planning Commission, respectively.

But even before the project is built, Cuyahoga County and its business partner, MMPI Inc. of Chicago, are looking at a potential future expansion.

Thnaks for the occasional photos.  I had a north-facing office in Key Tower for a number of years and wish I had it now to watch this project.  I think this project is the most important one going on in Cleveland now, more so than the casino and Innerbelt projects.

^amen.  The casino will help attract some conventions here, so it has a net positive.  I just hope they are done with channelling Darth Vader from Empire when he says that "I am altering the deal, pray I don't alter it any further"

Cleveland: Kennedy, President of MMPI resigns

CHICAGO -- Christopher Kennedy has announced that he will be stepping down from his position as president of MMPI, the company overseeing Cleveland's Medical Mart project.

Kennedy, a 25-year veteran of MMPI, says he decided that now is the best time for him to resign as it will allow for MMPI to make a leadership transition with minimum interruption to business.

Mark Falanga will succeed Kennedy as president of MMPI on July 23. Myron Maurer will also be promoted to Chief Operating Officer that same day.

The new President (Falanga) was more involved with the CC/MM than Kennedy.  If anything, I would guess this is a good thing for the project.

^I agree

Is the healthcare industry really buying into the medical mart concept?

Going back to those innocent and optimistic days of 2009 when the three-city medical mart competition was just taking shape, one thing has always been clear: For any of the projects to succeed, the healthcare industry would have to buy into the untested medical mart concept.

That is to say, the success of any medical mart would clearly be dependent on hospital purchasing managers seeing value in visiting a single location with a wide array of vendors peddling their wares to the hospital industry.

And it’s likely those hospital purchasing managers wouldn’t feel compelled to visit any medical mart unless the building was stacked with tenants that are at the top of the various sectors of the healthcare industry. To use an always-popular sports analogy: LeBron James and Alonzo Gee are both professional basketball players, but which one do you think is motivating America’s sports fans to part with their hard-earned, noncollective-bargained dollars to buy tickets?

Also worth reading is a reply in the comments section below by the Medical Mart's Director of Public Relations, Dave Johnson.

Sort of a response in his comment to the negative reaction to the list of tenants.

Missing from the article is the in-depth background research into the healthcare industry that would provide a clear understanding of the influence of the Cleveland Medical Mart charter tenants in the healthcare industry, rather than merely looking to a listing on the stock exchange or referencing another article in a local publication.
