I was at a conference where Anthony Coyne and Dave Johnson were guest speakers today.  If people remember the bridge proposal from Jackson's Lakefront Plan, they're apparently thinking of attaching it directly to the convention center so that conventioneers wouldn't have to go outside in their fancy dress to get from a convention to GLSC or Rock Hall.  The price tag for the bridge he said was about $70 million or some astronomical number like that.  He also mentioned the idea of running golf carts back and forth for the elderly and pregnant (etc.) like they do at airports.

  • Turning this space into an extension of the convention center is an example of making something out of nothing.    Sure it's been trial and error getting this building to have a purpose but

I vote we go full Colosses of Rhodes and build the world's biggest statue ever made over the 2 breakwater/pierhead lighthouses as ships enter the harbor...

Interesting, thanks.  The recent plan showed a climate controlled bridge, but it would launch from surface level, above the Mall C part of the center.  Doesn't seem like much of a stretch having it launch from the Center itself and providing some kind of public access to its launch point.  If we're building a bridge anyway, might as well provide direct links to as much as possible.

It would have a connection directly to the mall, he just mentioned the possibility of a direct second connection to the convention center itself.  He also mentioned raising the grade of the Lake front drop off point and putting some retail there to liven it up and aid the Lakefront/Mall connection.

KJP, I can see it now... The Cleveland Cliff Bridge.  The name is very fitting.  It makes me feel warm and fuzzy!!

^I don't think these isolated island's of retail work except sometimes in major cities with huge tourist trades (and even then high turn over or failure)  Retail is hard enough in downtown Cleveland without everybody suggesting pockets of it all over town in every development.  (Buy the way....I hope my post does not send this way off topic on retail in general in Cleveland)

Well, I wasn't thinking of naming rights for the walkway, but the city might be (Cleveland Cliffs Walkway -- very creative!).

Instead I was thinking of indoor advertising......

You would need a huge amount of predictable traffic to guarantee the impressions and subsequent investment.  My guess is that it would be a challenge. Even places like the tower city rapid station garner little attention.

Cleveland medical mart: MMPI’s minimum performance requirements

Cleveland Medical Mart & Convention Center property developer MMPI must hit several minimum performance benchmarks as part of its agreement with Cuyahoga County to continue operating the facility once it opens.

Those benchmarks pertain to the number of events, attendees, hotel room nights and occupancy of the medical mart, which is conceived as a collection of product showrooms for medical technology companies.

83% med mart occupancy is good, but the convention center numbers are WAY underwhelming. I have no problem believing they will get the MM part up and running and ready for expansion, but the Convention Center numbers are shitty at best!

Wow, didn't realize they were already that far off the ground. Thanks for your pictures!

Construction Update - 11/28/11

Project Updates :: November 28, 2011

The project continues in full swing with a focus over the next few months on structural steel erection and concrete work in the Medical Mart, Truck Dock, and Convention Center. On the Medical Mart site, the construction team reports that structural steel erection at the Medical Mart continues with two cranes from the East and West sides, working toward completion by the end of January, 2012.

Temporary heating prep work including piping and valves has continued to be put in place which will allow temperature sensitive activities to continue for the winter months ahead, carpenters will begin building temporary enclosures to capture the heat from gas torpedo heaters.

Spray-Fireproofing of steel underneath the future East Mall Drive will be starting in the new next few weeks.

The first nine Air Handlings for mechanical rooms on the East Concourse are scheduled to arrive by the end of November.

The construction team has completed installation of the 120-foot-long trusses forming the roof of the future ballroom north of Lakeside Avenue. Decking, detailing, and reinforcing installation continues on the future Mall C. The last sequence of steel for the Mall C structure arrived on November 22. Installation continues for the remaining rebar required to complete the slab pours on Mall C next week. Demolition of the W.3rd Street ramp is complete and preparations are underway for the rebuilding of this ramp. The ramp will be out-of-service until February 2012, requiring all deliveries to the Convention Center to be routed to the temporary Lakeside ramp.  Work has begun on underground plumbing at the Ballroom Level along with structural work associated with the new mechanical mezzanine.

On the future Convention Center site, crews finished the final section for the 35-foot-high structural wall that stretches nearly 600 feet from Public Auditorium to the future Medical Mart. The adjacent St. Clair Avenue was repaved, striped and opened to two-lane traffic on November 14. Loading dock grade beams, mat slabs, and the new west wall concrete are complete.

Structural steel and metal deck erection are complete on the future East Concourse promenade. The last major concrete pour on the East Concourse metal deck is scheduled for Wednesday, November 23. Spray-on fireproofing begins this week on the East Concourse. In the West Concourse area, work continues on the underground utilities with completion scheduled for early next week. Reinforcing steel has arrived and is being installed for the first post-tension deck pour.  The construction team reports that forming, reinforcing and concrete work has begun on the 27 caisson caps in the Convention Center Exhibit Hall that will eventually support the massive structural steel tree columns. Backfilling work is in progress along St. Clair Ave. in preparation for the tie in of the future East Mall Drive to St Clair Ave. Turner is also installing temporary barrier for the winter weather to enclose the north side for temporary heat.

Forming of the post-tensioned concrete slab over the truck dock has begun to allow for the first of three pours to start at the end of November.

At Public Auditorium, demolition is complete and prep work continues for installation of replacement entry doors and construction of a new connection between Public Auditorium and the new Convention Center. Selective demolition of terrazzo slabs at the North Vestibule is in progress.  The new exterior doors have been ordered installation will start in December.

Pictures today taken from the Marriott... sorry the glare was making it very difficult!

Awesome shots!

Now that's a good UO correspondent!! Not only does he stop to take in the urban spectacle, he takes pictures and shares them. A++!!

Very nice.

I'm liking shot number 4. There's a good sense of scale there using the traffic parapet in relation to the steel.

really gives a sense of the utter massiveness of this project -- and good progress too!

Does anyone have any pictures from inside the old Convention Center?

This video shows how construction of the Cleveland Medical Mart has changed since groundbreaking to December of 2011.

CMMCC Construction Update

Industry News

The steel frame of the future Cleveland Medical Mart & Convention Center continues to rise dramatically at the corner of St. Clair Avenue and Ontario Street, with crews already setting steel beams on the fourth level of the future structure. Structural steel and metal deck erection continues with two cranes working from the east and west sides, setting over 600 tons of steel with more than 40 ironworkers currently working on the Medical Mart steel erection.

Two of the three sequences of truss members for the main atrium support system have arrived and are being assembled on the ground. The Medical Mart atrium trusses, measuring more than 200ft long fully assembled, will be hoisted up in thirds beginning within the next week. Metal decking and shear studs are also progressing rapidly on multiple levels working toward conclusion in January 2012. Reinforcing for the concrete floors arrived earlier this week and the construction team will begin pouring the elevated floors next week.

A new surface for Mall B and C should not be overlooked..... nor should the added presence on Lakeside, infrastructure investment, whatever jolt this gives to PA or any incentive it gives to the County and CMSD to find new digs, and numerous other spin offs like the Crowne Plaza deal.  Even if the MM ends up just being the shiny packaging, the overall impact will most likely be well worth the investment.

Thank you. This is not a debate about building big things downtown (where big things invariably get built in any city!) versus building stuff in the neighborhoods. We can and are doing both. Please review the other threads, including for  up-and-coming areas like Midtown, Slavic Village, Detroit-Shoreway, and many other areas (I was actually pleasantly surprised driving east out Kinsman last week).

This thread is only about the convention center/medical mart construction project. Not everybody has to like it, but it's done. It's happening. As for debating downtown vs the neighborhoods, I thought we might have a discussion topic for that, but we don't. Probably because it's a pointless discussion, and even if wasn't, it's not going to happen in this thread.

Great pics

Mein Gott,

They are working at UNIVERSITY CIRCLE speeds

They are trying to get it under roof and enclosed before winter (I submit that winter has yet to arrive NE Ohio!) :-P

I concur and it frustrates me to no end.  It's flippin Jan. 6th and its flippin 50 degrees!! there are so many things wrong there.  If winter is delayed anymore they can finish the roof and just start growing grass on the new mall immediatly :(

I wouldn't mind if we skipped winter just this one time ;)

Pictures from Friday... theres a lot of new activity and building where Public Auditorium meets the CC... and the last shot shows the MM in relation to surrounding buildings.  I'm guessing where it is now is roughly the height of the final buildling?

What I love are the restored doors on The Public Auditorium!. Thanks for the photographs.

Can you see the restored doors in any of those pictures?  Sorry if I overlooked them.  Regardless, thanks for the great pics, and fantastic progress!

Jaysus, are you using a periscrope to take these pictures

You can get a real good view from The Club at Key Center, which is where I suspect mrclifton took these.

Yes KJP just go into the Marriott and go up the escalator. Big windows and perfect view of the construction!

Another great view is from the special collections wing in the library

yet another reminder of just how huge this project is!

Question - why is the MM not built up to street on Ontario?  What are the plans for the setback.... which appears to be no less than 50 feet?  (I am really bad at guessing distances)
