Rumor: Nashville Med Mart Dead; Cleveland the Winner... of Something

POSTED BY KYLE SWENSON ON WED, FEB 22, 2012 AT 1:30 PM

When local leaders first dropped their plans for a Medical Mart in our civic lap, the grand project was billed as a thrilling arms race: Cleveland would compete against two worthy adversaries — New York City and Nashville — for bragging rights as the country’s first permanent medical showroom complex. Now, almost four years later, it looks like the last of our competition could be circling the drain.

  • Turning this space into an extension of the convention center is an example of making something out of nothing.    Sure it's been trial and error getting this building to have a purpose but

Amused to see this big structural member coming up I-71 this morning!

Ha, I saw the same thing as I was walking from TC to work.  They are pretty big.

That looks like it belongs to a really large Erector set!

Construction update 2.23.2012:

With the majority of steel erection completed on the four-story Medical Mart complex,

construction crews have been busily pouring concrete on all four levels of the facility.

Crews completed the structural steel erection of the southeast showroom late last week,

allowing for a concrete pour on the slab-on-metal deck at the south half of Showroom Level 3.

Crews have been completing the metal deck detailing and installation of the shear studs

on the Penthouse level, to be followed by concrete placements.  Installation of supports and

hangers for the plumbing, mechanical and electrical continues on Showroom Level 2. Ductwork

has begun on the Entry Level.  Plumbing and electrical has also begun at the interstitial area

of the Entry Level floor.  Crews will shortly complete the installation of the Northwest Stair railings

and installation of the hangers and clips for Southwest Stair.  The sprayed on fireproofing

continues and the Mezzanine level framing should be completed in the near future with layout

and control lines work continuing on Showroom Level 3.  The first steel tube supports for the

precast concrete wall panels have begun and the North and West Elevations of the Mezzanine and Showroom Level 1 are in progress.  The fabrication and pouring of concrete for the precast wall

panels is continuing off-site. As of last week, 425 of the 515 (83 %) of the Medical Mart panels

have been made.  The Construction Hoist elevator is completed.

Marvin the Martian...what a hoot...

Good stuff!  What is that thing hanging off the side of the Medical Mart's roof?  It looks like it stretches over the street.  Did not see that in the renderings.

This project, along with the casino, will tranform the city for the better, and we will finally realize the benefit of hosting the rock hall.

(I like it)

Went for a walk/drive at lunch today and took a couple of shots from the 2nd floor of the Marriott. Also saw a truck delivering facade panels!!! What timing I have ...

It's lookin good!!!  Cant wait to see the panels go up.

I'm really not sure about those panels.  We'll just have to see how they look after they're all up.  They just look so... concrete.

I didn't realize how much the lakeside entrance would be raised above the street! Can't wait to see the finished mall with the new higher viewing platform

They looked pretty bad in person, actually. I was kind of like, "Oh."

I, too am hoping they look better up, with the glass as well. Fingers crossed!!

I dont mind the panels. Here is a photo from the architects website with a full scale mockup they tested .  The only difference is the panels seem to be more grey than the sample.  I reserve judgement once the panels are grouped together to see how successful the plan will be.

I too was thinking it looked a little too "concrete," but hopefully altogether it will look more like they wanted to to look with an everchanging pattern depending on the angle of the sun.. If we see a slightly different building each time we walk by the MM, it might make for a fun spectacle (reminds me of the color changing buildings at Florida International University).  Also, the panels might make for a cool place to have some awesome lighting at night and even one of those sweet 3D projection mapping things!!!

Thanks ... and dave68, don't put too much faith in the shade from my pic. It's a zoomed in part of a crappy phone pic. The colors/shading could be way off from reality and it wouldn't surprise me! ;-)

Nashville medical mart is still alive, planning for 2014 opening

The property developers behind the Nashville, Tennessee medical mart say the project is still moving forward and planning on a 2014 opening.

An official with the project told Nashville’s WKRN-TV that about 40 percent of the anticipated space in the Nashville Medical Trade Center was either leased or in the final stages of leasing. Project backers need signed leases covering about 60 percent of the space before they can secure the financing to begin construction.

Cleveland Scene reported last week that the Nashville project was dead, but a Nashville spokesman denied it at the time. The latest TV interview by David Osborn, general manager for the Nashville medical mart, was likely aimed at squelching that rumor.

I have always been a little dismayed at the size of the Nashville project.  Our Medical Mart is 5 floors. Their mart was planned to be 11 times larger. That would be a 55 floor version of our mart! We are looking at a building similar to Key Tower in size.  When Nashville was discussing a Medical Mart, were they planning for a similar concept as Cleveland, or were they using a different model?

I read the above article that said the Nashville MM was 11x the size of Cleveland's, that cant be right, can it??  Even the image of their MM in the link shows a building similar in size to the Cleveland MM.

According to Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tallest_buildings_in_Nashville the tallest building in Nashville (and also in Tennessee) is the 33 floor AT&T building.  Just seems odd to me that their MM, would be not only that much larger than the Cleveland MM, but also that much larger than all the other buildings in the city!!!  Even if it was a similar number of floors, to be 11x the size of Cleveland's MM it would have to take up 20 some blocks in the city, no way that could happen??

No, it won't be 11x bigger, but the folks at MedCityNews apparently aren't checking the math of the folks in Nashville. And based on the pictures on their website, the Nashville facility (if built) will be 5 or 6 stories.

Well, but I believe the Nashville one includes all the ballroom and exhtition space in their math where ours doesnt.

Yeah, it's something like that. The "11x square footage" is pure marketing.

If I remember correctly, Nashville's 1.5 million sf figure included their existing convention center space.  Factor in the Med Mart building, exhibition space, ball rooms, and meeting rooms in Cleveland and you're at around 550,000 sf of functional space.  Nashville is still bigger, but nowhere near 11x as big.

Also, it may be that the 1.5 million figure for Nashville includes all areas of their convention center and mart, including common space, hallways, bathrooms, loading docks, etc.  According to this county report that was posted up thead Cleveland's MMCC is 1 million SF when all these areas are included as well.

http://council.cuyahogacounty.us/pdf_council/en-US/Open%20Government/20120124-MedMart-Presentation.pdf

If Nashville's is calculated the same way then Cleveland's is 2/3 the size of theirs...not 11 times smaller.

County in the market to buy and sell real estate

Cuyahoga's search for new headquarters, plan to shed other properties will influence Cleveland's office market going forward

The 800-pound gorilla in Cuyahoga County's real estate market over the next few years is likely to be Cuyahoga County's government.

....Still, the county is offering a few intriguing properties from its portfolio.

....Perhaps the most attractive property in the county's portfolio, however, might be the administration building. The four-story building that dates to 1957 is adjacent to the under-construction Cleveland Medical Mart & Convention Center and is considered an attractive site for a hotel that could be linked to the convention center.

Hopefully you took them pics in black and white :-D jk, but they do look mighty grey :\. I pray to god it turns pearl white over night lol. Can't wait to see the impact this project will have on Cleveland once its up and running, the spinoff effect could be mind blowing :-)

My gut feeling is telling me the Nashville project is on "life support", hopefully it flatlines soon lol. I desperately want to pick up some of their leases, muahaha

Some pics from the MM/CC earlier today:

Thanks for all the picture updates!

AWESOME!

Some of the cladding is going up on the North side of the MM.

Thanks for sharing your photos. I wish the webcam position would have an additional position on the public auditorium so we could see more of the construction site

Thanks MayDay.

I am interested to see it on a clear day.  The panel texture appears lost

Is the patern noticeable from that distance?

^I could see it yesterday from the bus driving down lakeside, so yes the pattern is noticable from that distance.

I'm actually a lot more receptive to the design than I was at first. I think it is going to add some life to that area architecturally. The classical/beaux arts nature of the buildings on the mall are beautiful, but there isn't much complimenting contrast. Now, there will be.

Here are some clearer pictures that I took today:

I am happy

I am very pleased with the precast concrete pattern.  At first I was concerned it would be overpowering.  The subtle feel is effective and gives a nice energy to the box.

The patterned concrete is a nice touch.  May fit better with its surroundings than earlier renderings made it seem.

The concrete pattern kind of reminds me of the double helix shape of DNA! Maybe that wasn't on purpose, but it's medically-related in a way.

I think that it is on purpose, I noticed it too.  It's really, really cool.  I'm excited to see the whole thing together and in person.

check out the great new virtual tour for the medical mart and convention center on the official website.
