Comments, why do I read the comments?  This wasn't news anyway, it was already known that no additional parking was to be added.

I vote we go full Colosses of Rhodes and build the world's biggest statue ever made over the 2 breakwater/pierhead lighthouses as ships enter the harbor...

^ I think it depends on what ends up going there. Since its related to the MM, I'd imagine that they have a goal to get lots of continuous medical education events in there. Those will draw regionally (only the larger ones usually draw from around the country), and the bulk of attendees will drive in. Of course, if they aren't close enough to drive in and go home in one day, they will stay in a hotel. The obvious is to stay at the Marriott and walk across the street. Doesn't seem like too much of an issue to me unless you're a local and they know where to park anyhow.

Shuttle service from Muni Lot.  Done.

Fortunately there's already a train that runs between the two.

"Key Tower, Cuyahoga County and the city of Cleveland all have underground garages within a block of the complex, But they're not connected, and the 1,000-space county lot, which serves the Justice Center, often has been full with construction workers."

Yeah, filled with construction workers that won't be there anymore once the convention center is open.

Many of the countries largest convention centers (Marcone Center in San Fransisco comes to mind at first thought) have no parking associated with their complex. That's just a silly article.

Still my favorite quote from Cleveland.com

"The medical mart will never be built!"

Said by almost everyone on that website.

EDIT: this has been the plan for a couple years now....not sure why the PD is only hitting the panic button now.  I guess because of the perception that parking is all of a sudden in short supply due to the casino?

Because controversy, even if contrived by the media outlet itself, sells newspapers (with most of the sheep, anyway).

Fact is, Cleveland has been trying to add a parking deck with a walkway linking it to the MM/CC and North Coast Harbor, plus a bike station, plus a potential link to the Amtrak station and RTA Waterfront Line station. The city has been trying to get $20 million from the feds to help pay for the $46.7 million project but with no luck thus far. This is being discussed here:

Glad you reposted this. I'd take this as is, we need it!

But I would absolutely love it IF the multimodal facility could be more than a parking garage.  Or at least make the pedestrian bridge wider, as during the Great Lakes Exposition.

I forgot to add an image. See the last picture (before/after) posted above.

Okay, so maybe (definitely) not a 19 jersey lol. I may need my eyes checked, but not my memory. I remember being overjoyed when my New Jersey Generals got Brian Sipe!

Moving on..........

What happened to the serpentine bridge design that was first unveiled with Mayor Jackson's latest lakefront development plan? Has that design already been scrapped? This design lacks imagination.

At $80 million, it was considered too expensive.

Thank you for the information

I don't have any insight on this, but I would hope that the city (and county) uses the better-than-expected casino revenues to move the Lakefront Multimodal Facility forward. I know they want the federal money, but that's going to be a long wait, assuming they ever get it. The county benefits from this, and the county gets a big cut of the casino revenues. So bond it and use it to pay the unfunded $20 million.

The glass is being installed around the base. Quite a bit done, I didn't even notice! Most of it seems to still has the protective film but there's a section where it's already removed.

Also glass is in place above the ballroom at the overlook. Looking good!

Wow, they're not wasting any time! Thanks for posting all the pics.

Anyone see the plaza, and how they're laying topsoil/grass right on top of that standard blue insulation? Who knew you could do that??

I'm past there every day, they look immaculate.

A few more I took with my actual camera today.  I really can't wait for the mall to open up again.  I really think its going to be a great space and I hope it is utilized to the full.

Marketing chance for Cleveland convention center

Published: 11:37 am

The Ohio Society of Association Executives will hold its annual meeting in Cleveland beginning Wednesday. Delegates will get a hard-hat tour of the convention center/med mart that opens next summer.

The Ohio Society of Association Executives represents leaders of more than 40 professional groups including the state bar and medical associations and the Ohio Chamber of Commerce.

The meeting of the so-called "association of associations" ends Friday. Association leaders can play a key role in selecting convention and meeting locations.

Is that big? I mean, how does that compare to other conventions? When announcing conferences/conventions coming to town, unless it's the Democratic or Republican national conventions, please help the rest of us understand what the size of it might be.

Medical Mart and Convention Center booking big events in time for next years' opening

Published: Tuesday, July 24, 2012, 7:46 PM

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland's still being built medical mart and new convention center are starting to pull in big business.

The convention center, due to open two months ahead of schedule on July 1 of next year, has booked the 24th Annual Case Management Society of America Conference & Expo for June 2014.

The four-day event is expected to bring in more than $4 million and attract 2,000 attendees. It would be the largest healthcare association conference held in Cleveland, according to a press release from Merchandise Mart Properties, Inc.

Cleveland beat out Philadelphia and Orlando to host the event. Orlando ranks as the top city in the country for hosting healthcare meetings, said MMPI spokesman Dave Johnson.

For comparison, I used to work for a company in Cleveland that was HQ'd in Los Angeles and hosted VERY large biannual shows in Las Vegas - average attendance was between 60,000 and 80,000

I wouldnt pay too much attention to the 2,000..instead allow the 2,000 to contribute to the total amount of visitors at the end of the year.  I am excited to see that impactful number

Crain's headline today:

MMPI shows off progress at convention center site, says showroom space is 40% leased

"...Mr. Johnson, public relations director for developer MMPI Inc., is leading a dozen tours a week of the $465 million trade show complex..."

(I don't have a subscription, so don't have more info!)

Wow.  Great video.  It really gives you a sense of the scale of the project from the MM through to the lakefront.  Glad to see the connections back to Public Hall.  Has anyone heard anything more on the city turning over marketing and management of Public Hall over to MMPI for joint marketing of the entire facility?

I don't know if anyone's mentioned it yet, but the webcams on MMPI's website now show interior work.

^^MwC, from what I remember, Positively Cleveland, MMPI, and the city agreed that Positively Cleveland would market the facility for non-medical shows, and MMPI would do it for medical shows.

The reason was that part of the hotel bed tax goes to fund these activities.  PC would in theory handle all Public Hall events.

In my opinion, once MMPI hired Jim Bennet at the behest of the county council, everyone seems be getting along much better.  I wouldn't be surprised if every pitch they make includes Public Hall.

and on track to open 2 months ahead of schedule is pretty amazing for a project of this enormous scale!

Cleveland Convention Center ink three-year deal with Ohio Music Education Association

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - Merchandise Mart Properties, Inc. (MMPI) has announced a three-year agreement to host the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) Professional Development Conference at Cleveland Medical Mart & Convention Center (CMMCC) in downtown Cleveland in 2015, 2017, and 2019.

I walked by the mall facing side of Public Hall this afternoon and it's pretty cool to see the facade being repaired after the addition's removal destroyed large chunks of the limestone. They actually have huge prefabricated pieces lined up and ready to be put in place including all the decorative elements.

Great to see her being restored!  If they ever open for tours I encourage all UO's to attend to see the seldom-used additional theatres in house
