Just got done doing the tour at the Wendy Park Bridge/Connector, here's a word dump from that. FYI, I didn't think to get out my cell until a bit through talk of the bridge, so some numbers might be slightly off (drawing from memory). The main speaker was Sean McDermott from the Metroparks as well as one of the folks from the engineering firm that helped with the bridge. Text dump:

Bridge Specs

  • 80ft piles for the bridge
  • Ada compliant, serpentine just under 5pct
  • 26ft above tracks
  • Entirely 75ft above ground at arch
  • Prefab lifted in 5 or so pieces
  • City of CLE wanted a crane pad for lift bridge, hence offramp at the other side's strange configuration, came late in process
  • Railings have small led puck lights
  • Railings harken to the Rosalis design
  • Each end of bridge going to have gateway elements (not arches as originally planned), 316 grade of steel
  • Paid Ontario stone, railroad for easements
  • RR costs 6-700k on top of 6M construction costs
  • Rosalis design couldn't work in budget with constraints from RR
    • Bridge as built can withstand 125MPH winds/icing without adversely affecting RR
  • Weight limit h10 truck, pickup with plow
  • Planning to plow bridge and all paths as part of maintenance

Path Discussion

  • Invasive species are going to be the longest term project
  • Urban trails are some of the only illuminated trails in the metroparks
  • Some supports are different by NEORSD section, designed with flexibility based on what was in the ground to avoid huge change orders
  • Some Planks were poured 5 times, last plank Friday or Monday, open to traffic early next week
  • Bridge not opening until 6/24, push to the end
  • There's a section of aluminum truss bridge that can be lifted off the junction chamber for access to NEORSD infrastructure below
  • There's a removable hatch built into the bridge for short term access

Willow St. Bridge

  • Willow st bridge - from 1965, until it's rehabbed going to work with the 40" sidewalk as is (with waiting areas built on each side). They offered money to CLE to widen it but couldn't get there.
  • You can bike on the bridge now, but can't in two weeks, only way you can get to the the park is on the sidewalk. Fences and high curb will prevent other access Metroparks acknowledge flak they'll receive. Debating a display for bike tourer's for 40in clearance (like an airport bag check type deal - 'will your bag fit' aka will your bike/trailer fit?).
  • River road no parking, working from street parking that's existing

General Thoughts

  • We're a little out of balance, acknowledge E-W divide, time is being spent on the E side network right now
  • Most development properties are under 30yr abatement. Love development, but tough pill to swallow at times, they'd like a piece of things to continue improving trails
  • The huletts- we're working on something too 😉

Cleveland Metroparks’ widening of Lake Avenue sidewalk to improve Edgewater Park access is a great idea, despite shrill pushback

Steven Litt - CLveleand.com - June 15, 2021

5DI2ITVTZZDC5P7KUKACX2G6IM.png

"Metroparks has held several online meetings about the proposal with residents who live along nine-tenths of a mile of Lake Avenue from West Boulevard to West 117th Street. The agency wants to widen the badly worn concrete and sandstone sidewalk, which varies in width from 3 to 6 feet to an 8- to 10-foot-wide concrete path — big enough to accommodate cyclists and pedestrians. ... Lake Avenue in Lakewood, the suburb west of Cleveland, was wide enough for the city to install striped bike lanes on both sides of the street, in a recent County Greenways project funded by Cuyahoga County. But Lake Avenue narrows in Cleveland, making such lanes impossible. Widening the sidewalk would be the next best solution, according to Metroparks."

Tomorrow is the last day for feedback on the Lorain Avenue Rehab.  Please fill out the survey and insist on protected bike lanes.

Here's bike Cleveland write-up:

https://www.bikecleveland.org/bike-cle/news/action-alert-lorain-avenue/2021/06/

Here's the comments I put in the survey:

Option 1 is the best of the options presented. A better option would be to do street level, protected cycle track. Protection could be planters or even Jersey barriers, at much lower cost.  The savings (compared to sidewalk-level cycle track) could be used to put protected bike lanes on more streets, building up a proper network. Bike lanes are completely UNACCEPTABLE.  I would not ever be comfortable riding an unprotected bike lane.

Analysis: City of Cleveland is quietly blocking citizen planning efforts for safer, bike-friendly streets

https://www.thelandcle.org/stories/analysis-city-of-cleveland-is-quietly-blocking-citizen-planning-efforts-for-safer-greener-streets

"At the heart of the issue, advocates have said, is the fact that the city of Cleveland has time and time again failed to follow through on its plans for comprehensively improving cycling and pedestrian infrastructure. “I give the city credit for doing what it’s done so far,” Jacob VanSickle, executive director of Bike Cleveland, told The Land in a recent interview. “But as we look down the barrel of climate change, and we look at issues of health and equity especially in east side neighborhoods, we certainly can do better when it comes to making it safer for people to bike and walk.”

And it’s not just an issue of money, either. The city missed opportunities to apply for federal funding for the Lorain Avenue cycle track in 2018, 2019, and 2020, according to Bike Cleveland. It remains to be seen if they will hit the July 12 deadline for federal RAISE funds this year."

I really like the reporting in The Land.  They do quality local journalism.  This article prompted me to make another donation to them.

Lime ebikes just rolled into Cleveland

https://www.thelandcle.org/stories/lime-ebikes-coming-to-cleveland-enhancing-mobility-options-for-riders

"The company recently launched 50 e-bikes in Cleveland, with plans to grow the fleet up to 400 in the coming months. This is the first time that e-bikes, which are bikes that provide an electric boost once users start pedaling, are available in Cleveland. They’re already available in many other cities."

Lots of great info in this article: Trouble-laden Willow Avenue lift bridge to be replaced with new multi-modal transportation bridge, but it will take years

(This is the West Bank bridge that connects to the new Wendy Island bridge.)

https://www.cleveland.com/news/2021/07/trouble-laden-willow-avenue-lift-bridge-to-be-replaced-with-new-multi-modal-transportation-bridge-but-it-will-take-years.html

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Willow Avenue Lift Bridge carries not only pedestrians and cyclists, but more than a thousand industrial trucks a day over the Cuyahoga River’s old river channel to and from Whiskey Island, south of the Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks.

Useful as it may be, residents are calling for its replacement, as cyclists struggle to fit more than one bike at a time down the narrow sidewalk and truck traffic plagues nearby public housing complex Lakeview Terrace, blowing fumes that compromise residents’ health and creating dust that coats cars and homes.

At 57 years old, the bridge is already seven years past its expected design life, after undergoing rehabilitation projects in 1987 and 2010 and three emergency repairs since 2015.

ODOT to focus on walking, biking with five-year plan

Laura Hancock - cleveland.com - July 15, 2021

"As more Ohioans walk and bicycle to travel, either by choice or necessity, the Ohio Department of Transportation announced Thursday it launched the Walk.Bike.Ohio plan, with an eye on their safety. ... The plan doesn’t provide details about exactly where, for instance, to put in more bike lanes or improve crosswalks. Instead, it provides analyses of the state’s walking and biking infrastructure, where people who use it live, the overall health benefits of people walking and biking and other studies. It’s a framework to help ODOT and local governments know where to focus when making decisions to improve bike and pedestrian accessibility and safety over the next five years."

Clevelanders and Americans in general have no idea how to foster inclusive, joyful urban living. The amount of isolationism, fear and distrust of other human beings is truly disheartening. It's a shame that our "leaders" caved in it. The blood of the next Lake Ave. bike crash is on you.

Hey folks -

I want to bike to work (Key Tower) at least twice a week as the weather gets mild, and haven’t a clue where I can lock my bike up in the vicinity of Key Tower. Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions. Thanks!

I would ask the attendant at the Key Tower parking garage.  They probably have someplace you can lock up your bike, but it might be tucked away in a corner or behind a stairwell or someplace stupid.

Is bringing the bike into your office out of the question?

In the office is out of the question, unfortunately.

The Key Bank Garage (from my understanding) charges for bikes 😒

There are bike racks outside of Terminal Tower. I never see anyone use them but they're there. There is also a ton of bike racks at the corner of St. Claire and West Mall Dr. outside of the center for health innovation. Either place should be a manageable walk, if not super close.

Residents concerned about how East Main project in Kent will impact neighborhoods

City Engineer Jim Bowling described the project just as he did at a similar forum held last week.

Oh man, that's frustrating. Is The Bike Rack too far/annoying of a walk for you? Looks like a bunch of bike racks around the Medical Mart, but to my next point not many cameras on my streetview perusing. Otherwise I'd pick somewhere outside that has a camera overhead/valet nearby. Also I'm sure you're already doing this, but buy a good U Lock and a cable. U Lock the back triangle and get the cable through your front wheel. It seems a bit excessive but if someone wants bike stuff they'll go out of their way to take it.

I lost a bike to a crappy cable lock back in the day, very sensitive to this haha.

I'd also post on twitter about this if you haven't already.

If you wouldn't want your 5-year-old biking there, then it's not really a good option and additional infrastructure is needed.  That may not be practical financially in rural areas and suburban sprawl, but should be a given in the city.

Four regional trail projects advance

By Ken Prendergast / November 18, 2021

Cleveland Metroparks today announced it was awarded $950,000 by the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) to advance the planning and design of four regional transportation projects that encompass 5.7 miles of trail and bicycle connections on Cleveland’s East Side and in the city of Euclid. Three of the four projects impact Cleveland’s Slavic Village neighborhood and the southeast side of the city.

Blazing trails: Metroparks wins federal money to build east side Towpath Trail equivalent

The Cleveland Metroparks and an influential coalition of planning agencies called the Cuyahoga Greenways Partnersannounced that they won $950,000 from the  U.S. Department of Transportation for the planning and design of four small trail sections that make up 5.7 miles of trail and bicycle connections on Cleveland’s east side.

The projects were awarded federal funding through the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grants program and will support an overall $1.5 million planning project that leverages local funding from Cleveland Metroparks and the City of Cleveland.

Mill Creek Falls Metroparks officials promise the project will provide 80,000 people living near existing Metroparks—like Mill Creek Falls trail in the Garfield Park Reservation in the Union Miles neighborhood and the Euclid Creek Reservation, running from South Euclid to Euclid and East Cleveland—with additional options to access the trails by walking or by biking there.

When I went on the tours for the Redline Greenway and the Wendy Park Bridge, Sean McDermott and staff had noted the trail/greenway discrepancies between East and West within the city and how they were planning to focus on the east more. I'm glad they put their money (and grant writing staff) where their mouths were!

No news, just a shameless bike pic, happy new year y'all.

That's awsome! Does anyone know what new sections of Euclid Creek Greenway the article is referring to? I've seen a few possible extensions mentioned online, the most exciting of which is connecting Euclid Creek Park to Euclid Beach Park, but I've also seen a more tame extension to Euclid Ave proposed.

Bird e-bikes have arrived in Cleveland just in time to take advantage of the warmer weather.

The company dropped off 100 of its pedal-assist, electric bikes on Cleveland streets this week, not quite doubling the total offering of shared e-bikes available for rent in the city.

The Lime brand put 100 of its e-bikes in service in the city last summer and has since upped its total to almost 200, with plans to provide nearly 400 by summer, according to a company spokesman.

Now if we can just get better bike infrastructure in the city....
