For the love of god just build some protected bike lanes. Put down some paint and cheap flexible bollards and call it a day. $20 million to add about 10-15 minutes of biking, with no connectivity at either end. It doesn't even connect to the protected bike lanes over the Superior bridge.

THIS! That stretch of Superior drives me insane! The bike lanes appear and disappear several times within a few blocks. I'd almost prefer no bike lines than to be reasonably comfortable in a bike lane for it just disappeared forcing me to quickly move into a lane with heavier vehicles moving much faster than me who may have not expected the bike lane to just disappear.

I don't see why they aren't planning to extend this to the bridge.

Not Northeast Ohio, but check out yet another interesting project that Sandusky is working on:

SANDUSKY, Ohio – Traveling to Cedar Point and the rest of Sandusky from the Cleveland area should get easier in a few years, thanks to the rebuilding of U.S. 6 east of the city, which was awarded a major $24.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The funding, announced last week, will also make it easier to bike into and around town.

The grant, part of the competitive Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) program, will fund improvements along a six-mile stretch of U.S. 6 (Cleveland Road) from U.S. 250 to Rye Beach Road and Ohio 2, east of town.

Cuyahoga County seeking public input on where to expand bike-, scooter-sharing program

By Kaitlin Durbin, cleveland.com

"Cuyahoga County is looking to expand its network of public bicycles and scooters to more inner ring suburbs but wants to hear from residents about where it will be most beneficial.

A map of potential bike and scooter parking stations shows several dozen options planned for downtown Cleveland as well as stretching from Lakewood, West Park, Edgewater, and South Brooklyn on the county’s west side, to Glenville, East Cleveland, Cleveland Heights, South Euclid, University Heights and Shaker Heights on the east side.

...

The county is seeking public comment on the planned locations through Sept. 30. Residents can find locations of interest on the interactive map and click on the icon to learn more about the proposed equipment that will be placed there and click on “submit feedback” to leave a comment."

Here is the link where you can leave feedback on locations

Solon Mayor Ed Kraus is continuing his support of new bicycle trails and it has become even more personal:

http://www.chagrinvalleytoday.com/editions/solon_times/article_d03bde38-29fb-11ed-bc93-e7382dee6fbc.html

"Solon Mayor Edward Kraus recently led a bus full of politicians, park planners, and county planning commissioners on a tour of the planned Solon-Chagrin Falls Trail, highlighting the planned path that will eventually connect the two cities via a trail along a former rail line.  His goal to add trails and connectivity in the city has become an even more personal one since he was hit by a car while riding his bike in Woodmere Village earlier this summer.

...

"Since the accident, Mayor Kraus has focused on showing his constituents the benefits of creating bike and walking trails, so bicyclists and walkers can use a trail rather than ride or walk on a street filled with cars."

Mayor Kraus was a strong advocate of bike trails even before this crash. I appreciate his continued leadership on this. The balance of the article (I'm assuming it's paywalled) is about the ongoing progress of the Solon-Chagrin Falls connector trail running on the old rail RoW from SOM Center to Chagrin Falls. (And lest anyone be concerns about losing rail RoW, this RoW was long ago wrecked for rail because Kruse drive in Solon was built on it.) If you zoom in enough on Google maps you'll see the RoW it will follow - just south of Solon Rd, north of the Carter Lumber property. Because of the rail RoW, 422 was constructed with a convenient bridge over the RoW, so that part is taken care of.  Just east of that and Liberty Rd, you'll see the newish houses on Aberdeen Lane where the most vocal critics of the trail live. (This is crazy to me - imagine how awesome it would be to have the town build and maintain a bike trail right next to your property, and having it go to actually useful places on both ends.)

The initial trail will be 2.4 miles. So far they have grants for $1.2M of the estimated cost of $4.25M. (Holy cow is it expensive to build things here.)  This does include two trail bridges PLUS a suspension bridge over the Chagrin River.  CLE Metroparks project is doing planning and development.

This YouTube video shows the route and has drone footage of the entire trail.

And here's the complete Solon "Active Transportation" proposal. I like pretty much everything about it except converting the perfectly viable NS RoW to a trail. (Especially since it's parallel to Aurora Rd, which is getting a multipurpose trail alongside with the upcoming widening, which only adds a center turn lane.)

I’m going to try to make it to the CLE Slow Roll bike gathering at Shaker Square this evening if anyone wants to join me. I have a bright red helmet and am clearly not a serious biker - feel free to find me and say hello. I haven’t been able to figure out where exactly on the Square they’ll meet, but they usually start gathering at 6 and ride at 7. Paging @GISguy

Sharrows are useless and should be banned as a tool for bike infra. I do like the idea of making bike boulevards though...as long as they don't make ppl go out of their way to get from x to z. Too many times bike routes and bike boulevards don't take time and distance into consideration. All that said, it's absolutely wild that this will take $150-200k to develop...I need to get into consulting, what a ripoff.

Plus city leaders can point to them and say they've developed "bike infrastructure", but without having to do anything to actually make the city easier to bike in.

I don’t know if I’ll be able to make it, but tonight’s slow roll should be a great one:

10 safety tips for bike commuters in Cleveland (video)

Published: Oct. 04, 2022, 8:00 a.m.

By John Pana, cleveland.com

For bike commuters and people considering riding on busy streets, the hazards involved call for caution and education. In the video above, Ken takes viewers on a bike tour of streets in Cleveland and Lakewood to demonstrate common scenarios cycling commuters face and how to stay safe. He covers the following topics:

  • Navigating a two-stage left-turn bike box
  • Navigating a one-stage left-turn bike box
  • Using a bike lane next to parked cars and avoiding the door zone
  • How to proceed when the bike lane is blocked
  • Changing lanes from the bike lane
  • Making a left turn from the bike lane
  • Joining the road when the bike lane ends
  • How to proceed when construction blocks traffic
  • Safely using a paved bike trail
  • Passing pedestrians on the sidewalk or trail

Wow, that is a HUGE expansion. I took my kids there several months ago to try out the pump track. It was too much for my kids (or me, lol). My 8 year old bit it hard just rolling down a hill and trying to turn on gravel. But at that time, it was just the area in the red highlighted circle at the top. And even though I absolutely could not handle it, it was very cool. But now it’s at least six times the size as before.

I think this section of the old tracks have some great trail potential by more directly connecting the red line greenway and the towpath.

It would basically give the green way a North/South 'Y' which should make it more useful.

Edit: Another useful connection point is that without these tracks the greenway can maybe connect to and make use of the train ave underpass.

I knew I'd seen this discussed before, and I found @KJP's right-of-way maps in the Transit Ideas for the Future thread.  It does have the potential to be a great addition to the trail network.  If it's possible to convert the ROW all the way to the southwestern end, that would connect a few neighborhoods that aren't well-connected at the moment.  The northern end would easily connect with the Redline Greenway, Lake Link, and Towpath trails, plus maybe the Columbus peninsula (though I'm not sure they'd maintain the lift bridge for a trail).

FlatsIndustrialRRROW-overview.jpg

FlatsIndustrialRRROW-zoom.jpg

It looks like the Flats Industrial parcels were recently divided up. The portion southwest of West 41st appears to be sold to Norfolk Southern as one ofbits mainline tracks was on the right of way. The portion northeast of West 41st remains with Flats Industrial and is to be vacated for common carrier railroad use.

Van Aken Bikeway coming soon to Shaker, along with $1 million in ARPA funding for Lee Road

SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio -- City Council paved the way Monday (Oct. 24) for the design of the $1.8 million Van Aken Bikeway Plan project, targeted for 2024.

In other good news for cyclists, motorists and pedestrians alike, council also accepted a $1 million grant through Cuyahoga County’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding to go toward engineering on the Lee Road Action Plan. That money will become available next year.

One of the objectives of the roughly 1-mile bikeway will be to improve neighborhood access to and from a revitalized Lee Road corridor and the Van Aken District.

Information on Garfield Park connector in most recent Metroparks agenda:

"In partnership with the City of Garfield Heights, Cuyahoga County Department of Public Works has identified Garfield Boulevard (County Route 261) in need of repaving. Furthermore, Garfield Boulevard from Warner Road to Turney Road in Garfield Heights is denoted on the Cuyahoga Greenway Plan for a future on-road multi-modal facility. Through the work of the Cuyahoga Greenway Partners, of which Cuyahoga County, Cleveland Metroparks, and the City of Garfield play important roles, additional funding has been identified to increase the scope of a typical 0.9 mile repaving project to now include a “road diet”, green infrastructure components supported by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District, and a multi-use path connecting the Mill Creek Connector Trail to Garfield Park Reservation, effectively connecting Garfield Park Reservation to the Towpath Trail (the “Project”)."

My god, a buffer from the parking lane AND traffic. Excited for 2038 when it's finally built! (frustrated sarcasm so don't mind me lol)

Started up my bike commute again and the frustration builds just a little bit more when I'm riding down 25/Pearl and into town. I know Bike Cle is pushing for more connectivity (and RTA is planning on making this a bus only lane as part of BRT) but there are very few places where I'd feel safe biking with folks who aren't 'road hardened' in this city. I hope money and time can go towards simple, cheap projects in addition to these huge midway-esque projects. PS- Sharrows are not bike infrastructure.

The coolest thing about the midway project to me is the trees that will accompany it. So I was a bit apprehensive when I followed that through to the presentation link (https://t.co/gOzSVHbGCO) and found that the trees drawn into the Superior Midway diagrams are tiny landscaping trees. I understand the engineering and landscaping haven't even started yet, but it seems like greenery always decreases from initial conception, so this is a worrying first sign. Hopefully the new Urban Forestry Commission does their job and makes sure tall trees are planted.

^and are maintained. It's a shame they can call the path along the OC a bike path. It looks like an absolutely miserable time/path you'd only take because you have to. I wonder how many trees along the path will stick around after the winter. Sorry sorry, in a pessimistic mood today.

I hate this godforsaken state sometimes.

Here’s a possible Federal loophole to override the proposed state loophole that is attempting to override the local control.
