Ongoing breakwall repair.

'A portion of Cleveland's breakwater seen here undergoing repairs. Construction of the 4-mile long breakwater began in 1827 and it's purpose was to protect Cleveland's harbor from Lake Erie's relentless pounding waves. In October 2012, 30+ foot waves from Superstorm Sandy caused significant damage to the breakwater structure and repairs are still underway. The large geometric shaped concrete blocks used for the repair are called dolosse. They each weigh about 6.5 tons and are meticulously placed using special software to verify that they are interlocked properly to provide the best structural integrity.'

^30 ft waves on Lake Erie? Wow. I wonder if there are any pictures of those huge waves hitting the breakwall.

These were from Sandy, if I recall right there were a ton.

^ Wonder what's on it.

Don't know, but it probably wasn't on the ship when this picture was taken. The ship is riding pretty high on the water.

And a new international shipping line to Antwerp.  This is exciting for Cleveland; transportation is what builds cities!

Sens. Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman 'demand' that Cleveland Harbor dredging be handled properly

WASHINGTON -- Ohio's U.S. senators, in open war with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers over the handling of waste from Cleveland Harbor dredging, today demanded that the Corps spend more than Congress budgeted so it can dispose of the waste properly and not just dump it in the open waters of Lake Erie.

Not unless they originate in India and then stop in Antwerp enroute. A route from India to Cleveland via Suez, even with a stopover in Antwerp, is actually pretty direct. It's called the Short Sea Shipping route from Asia, and it's been advocated for a long time to avoid the congested West Coast ports and using more expensive trains than an all-water route to reach the Midwest-Northeast region...

Is it weird I get so excited seeing this?  Few things say "big cosmopolitan city" louder than a busy international port.

Chances of another Lakes port starting to compete for container ships anytime soon?

Is it weird I get so excited seeing this?  Few things say "big cosmopolitan city" louder than a busy international port.

I like it too -- even though this means the railroads between Cleveland and the East Coast get a little less traffic. I like what this does for Cleveland. And these two ships -- the Exeborg from Sweden operated by Royal Wagenborg and the Fagelgracht from Belgium operated by Spliethoff -- mean that Cleveland is a very different place from most Midwest cities. Here are April's ships: ow.ly/ZPjKv Tonnage at the Port of Cleveland was 5x higher in 2015 vs 2014. Here's hoping 2016 is even better!

Toronto is the only other one offering container service. And few other Great Lakes ports are handling finished products, containerized or not. Most are handling aggregates -- limestone, sand, ore, coal... And dammit, that's just not sexy!

Lubrizol begins exporting to Europe through Port of Cleveland

By: AJOT | May 10 2016 at 03:41 PM | Ports & Terminals

The Port of Cleveland and The Lubrizol Corporation, one of Ohio’s largest exporters to Europe, have announced the maker of specialty chemicals is now exporting products directly to Europe through Cleveland’s Port. Lubrizol, a Berkshire Hathaway company headquartered in Wickliffe Ohio, is now shipping container loads of specialty chemicals produced at its facilities in Northeast Ohio via the Cleveland-Europe Express (CEE) service. The CEE service, a partnership between the Port of Cleveland and the Spliethoff Group of the Netherlands, is the only scheduled ocean service between the Great Lakes, Europe and points beyond.

Port President and CEO Will Friedman said, “We are extremely pleased Lubrizol is now a customer of the Cleveland-Europe Express. As a world leader in the specialty chemicals industry and a leading global company based in Northeast Ohio, Lubrizol is exactly the type of Ohio exporter we aimed to serve. While it is still early, this is a critical milestone for the Cleveland-Europe service”. Although the CEE has been carrying Ohio-made exports to Europe since its inception, Lubrizol is the first large Ohio exporter to shift volume from the traditional East Coast routing to the CEE.

Port of Cleveland called economic driver despite cargo decline

By James Ewinger, The Plain Dealer

on August 13, 2016 at 6:15 AM, updated August 13, 2016 at 5:26 PM

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cargo tonnage on the St. Lawrence Seaway is down 11 percent for the quarter ending July 31, according to a report released by the seaway, and the Port of Cleveland is down by about 7 percent.

Jade Davis, the port's vice president for external affairs, said the decline is illusory because last year was so successful. The port is outperforming what it did year-to-date in 2014 by about 200,000 tons, he said, "and we could still catch up to 2015 by the end of the year."

He said in a telephone interview Thursday that tonnage moving through Cleveland has declined only slightly "due to our increased cargo from container shipping."

'Cuyahoga River remains undredged, threatening shipping commerce; Port seeks court order vs Army Corps of Engineers'

This whole situation is just so odd, I don't really understand it. It seems like the Corp just thinks it's smarter than everybody else and is the sole authority to speak on behalf of the river.

As they proved in New Orleans and in this case in Cleveland and in cases nationwide, the Army Corps of Engineers is an arrogant, incompetent organization. They can't get even the simple things correct.

Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority has down 2016, mirroring industry

January 15, 2017 UPDATED 15 HOURS AGO

By JAY MILLER

Although 2016 was not a banner year for shipping through the docks along Lake Erie and the Cuyahoga River, it wasn't awful, either. The local results mirrored the results for the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway inland waterway system.

In particular, the Cleveland-Europe Express, the only regularly scheduled cargo and container service between the Great Lakes and Europe, suffered from low-rate competition.

"(The year) was not as strong as we'd hoped," said Will Friedman, president and CEO of the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority, in an interview. "It was one of the worst years for ocean transport. Shippers were offering crazy-low rates from East Coast ports."

This report is much better reading than the mid-season numbers, when the Seaway was down 11% and Cleveland was down 7%.

Two cruise lines will be stopping at the Port of Cleveland this summer season. I tried to figure out if partial voyage city-hopping was possible, such as Montreal to Cleveland, but apparently it is not.

There is also the Polsteam Line' date=' offering a monthly tramp steamer sailing to Europe (Cleveland to IJmuiden, Netherlands)[/quote']

Now THATs a way to travel. who needs a luxurious cruise or a six-hour flight when you could have this!?:

"Great Lakes round voyages are offered with embarkation in IJmuiden, Cleveland or Burns Harbor at a fare of $6,300 for 60 days"

I'm curious if they actually get passengers or just offer it for fun. Looks like they have dedicated a few cabins for this across their fleet. Though, if there are no takers, I guess the crew themselves could use the nice cabins.

CLE to AMS is 25 days; AMS to CLE is 12 days, approximately.

Found this blog post from a passenger:

"We crossed Lake Erie at 15 knots through the night and reached Cleveland at 9.30 this morning so we didn't get to see much of that lake either! A busy morning of packing and clearing our cabins left me no time to get morose.

Once we had docked, US Customs Officers came aboard and closed all exits until they had interviewed all passengers and crew members and cleared us all for entry to the USA. They were not nearly as scary as the ones who boarded the George Poole, when Ian and I crossed the Atlantic 25 years ago and arrived in Fort Lauderdale...."

They do say that the 60-day fee is $105 per day less for voyages shorter than 60 days, which makes the trip $105 per day - don't know why they don't just say that. But they don't. Anyway, $105 a day for room, board, and transportation doesn't sound bad at all even if the food is pierogi and cabbage every night. I would do it. My wife ... er, frowns and says nothing when I suggest it.

Corps of Engineers resumes dredging a section – but not all – of Cuyahoga River

"Cleveland, Ohio – Dredging resumed this week in the Cuyahoga River shipping channel after a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers survey showed sediment buildup in the lower stretch nearest to Lake Erie and Cleveland Harbor. Dredging in the upper channel nearest to the ArcelorMittal steel mill's docks is expected to begin later this month, said Luciano Vera, a spokesman for the Army Corps.

The five-mile stretch in between, however, will only be dredged where necessary. That's because, in a policy reversal from previous years, the Army Corps will "prioritize" its work.

"We will work with the contractor to address shoaling areas throughout the entire channel," Vera said. "Some sections will not require dredging at this time based on survey results."

Last year marked the first shipping season in more than 30 years that the Army Corps did not dredge the entire river."

There's more at: http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2017/04/army_corps_of_engineers_resume.html

This whole saga is SO strange and petty. There have to be personalities involved.

Has anyone else noticed the bulk-carriers anchored off the breakwall the past couple days?  Yesterday there was two, maybe 3 out there.  This morning there was still one riding at anchor, low in the water.  It must just be a spring rush, but I don't recall ever seeing that before.

Victory Cruise Lines lists five of its six Toronto - Chicago cruises (with a port call in Cleveland) as already sold out for this summer. That augurs well for more next year. The first port call in Cleveland is scheduled for June 20th. Look for a blue hull with a white superstructure.
