Port of Cleveland‏

@portofcleveland

Today we welcomed the Victory I from Victory Cruise Lines to the Port of Cleveland, our first cruise ship at the Port in decades.

Good day to stop in port!  Strong winds out of the west have the lake kicked up today to 5 footers!

Today should be a busy day in the port.  Four salties are due to arrive:

Demetrios K  from Turkey

Isadora from Holland

Beatrix from Sweden

Floretgracht from Belgium

Six ships from Antwerp this month.  It sounds as if the container service The Port Authority came up with was a good idea.

I saw the Federal Maas pulling in from the Shoreway just as a plane was landing at Burke.  Woulda made a great video LOL

I was on the lake at Beulah Saturday around 2pm and I saw two large vessels at once, which I’ve never seen before.  The tracking suggests the Iryda and possibly the Huron Spirit.  Unless vessels headed to other ports are visible from the shoreline.

International shipping up through Port of Cleveland

By JAY MILLER

2 minutes

International shipping is up through the Port of Cleveland in 2017, part of an overall increase in traffic through the St. Lawrence Seaway, including a 35% increase in the month of September.

"Year to date, we've seen an 8% increase in international tonnage, supported by an increase in non-containerized steel shipments for multiple projects around northeast Ohio," said Jade Davis, vice president of external affairs for the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority in a news release from the Chamber of Marine Commerce.

"We have also seen a larger number of imported containers moving on the Cleveland-Europe Express and specific project cargo movements of upgraded capital equipment for use in manufacturing plants in our region," Davis said.

Victory must have had a good year. If I counted correctly, they made 7 portcalls in Cleveland last summer.  According to their website, they are planning 16 next year. They will do this by hauling passengers in both directions between Toronto and Chicago instead of only westbound, as in 2017.

Good for them! So many outdoor/seasonal places start closing down in Septermber or October because winter is coming... only for there to be another month and a half of relatively good weather.

^ That's a great article (and pictures). The ship looks MUCH nicer than I expected from their brochure. My wife HATES the idea of a cruise, but I am working on her ...

Remember: It's the Year of the Snake

That is crazy expensive but yea that ship is actually really nice!  I would definitely do this if I could afford it.  I hope it is a success, and a great unique way for people to see Cleveland.

I think that it's really cool to be having cruise ships calling on Cleveland, but the actual # of people that these ships bring is pretty minute.  1,500 total last year and 3,000 ppl projected for 2018.  That's less than what one of the large cruise ships brings to a tiny Caribbean town or Alaskan village in one go- and I've seen cruise ships lined up 3-4 deep in Ketchikan or Skagway.  It's 1/3 to 1/4 the attendance for a Lake Erie Monsters game.  So, still in it's infancy.  Hopefully it grows!

And it's not that expensive. One can easily rack up $6,000 by staying several weeks in Europe, including air fare.

Blount Cruises, mention by S. Glaser in the PD article, offers a Cleveland portcall on their 16-day Chicago-New York (via NY State Barge Canal and the Hudson River) cruise for ~$5,000. That one is a comparative bargain.

Port Authority Board approved two things yesterday which are good for the port:

1. "The Port board approved a project to reconfigure and improve the Port’s Sediment Processing & Management Facility (SPMF).....The new SPMF upgrades will allow the Port to process up to 160,000 cubic yards annually for sale and beneficial reuse. That represents over 65% of the total material, and any remaining sediment of poorer quality will continue to be placed into permanent storage in the CDF."

2. The board also approved "an application for permits to install new bulkheads at the Port’s bulk terminal. The project involves installation of 1,185 new feet of waterfront bulkheads, along with upgrades to tie rods, maritime fenders, and the rehabilitation or replacement of mooring equipment."

I finally wore her down. Mrs. McDougal and I booked a cruise from Montreal to Detroit.  The Cleveland stop is a Saturday 8AM arrival that departs at 9PM. There's an Indians game, but unfortunately it starts at 7:10PM. The boat gets to Detroit at 6AM on Sunday. The cruise line suggests a noon flight home. They must not think much of Detroit.

Where does it actually dock?  At the port?  It's a shame they can't pull it up alongside Northcoast Harbor.

Dock 28, west of the stadium and north of the heavy lift crane.  The corner of the wharf is cordoned off as a customs and immigration holding area when the last port of call is Canadian. My wife and I were passengers on Victory II, a sister ship; it was a very pleasant cruise from Montreal to Detroit (via Cleveland and other ports).

According to the Ship Arrivals reported by the Port of Cleveland, the city is due for a handsome visitor on Sept 25, the Conti Group's MV Hamburg, which some years ago

cruised the Great Lakes under the name Christopher Columbus.

^More about the Hamburg ... It's making an 18 day cruise from Montreal to Chicago and back with different cities being visited westbound and eastbound. Cleveland's portcall is on the westbound passage. The tour is aimed at Europeans with a charter flights to/from Montreal to/from Frankfurt and Munich.

Hamburg is the fourth cruise ship this year to call in Cleveland. It is expected to be joined next year by the newly launched Hapag-Lloyd liner "Hanseatic Inspiration". Quite suddenly starting last year, Great Lakes cruising is back in business.

On the Port's vessel lineup covering about 6-7 weeks, there is only one Spliethoff--the container service between CLE and Antwerp.  Why is this? I thought there were two sailings per month from CLE. Did they scale their schedule back or is it just missing from the Ports's list?  Also, what is "BKE" under "Country of Origin"?

http://www.portofcleveland.com/media/1237/08122018-vessel-lineup.pdf

BKE = Brake, Germany. It's a port on the Weser between Bremen and Bremerhaven, off the North Sea.

The SS HAMBURG was here at the Port of Cleveland, apparently they were late getting here, they were supposed to be here earlier Tuesday, but arrived in the afternoon & did a quick bus tour for some of the mostly German passengers-quick loop around the city then back on the ship & they left last night.

It'd be nice if that parking lot were resurfaced, or better yet a welcome center/neighborhood be there to greet them.

True. But I've taken cruise ships out of some pretty ugly ports/dock areas that look very similar.

Toronto's passenger port is bleak and inconveniently located. Kingston, Ontario has no port; ships anchor out and run boats; Buffalo has no suitable facility at all, according to Victory Cruise Line. Detroit, on the other hand, has a pretty decent location and facility.

Remember: It's the Year of the Snake

I wonder why they don't dock at the end of East 9th St. Pier.

That would be nice as E 9 St pier used to board people on ships. Not sure if those were only domestic routes. The passenger ships now need immigration control. They do this now at the Port with a modified trailer and it seems to work well.

^^That would make a better impression, IMO for those visiting the city than docking at the port.

^If that's all the port has for immigration control, I think the Goodtime III's "office" is a modified trailer too, though I could be wrong.  That would be an easy add-on for the E. 9th pier.

I wonder why they don't dock at the end of East 9th St. Pier.

I'd bet the E9th pier isn't dredged enough.  Victory II draws about 17 feet when fully loaded.

Edit:  the north and east faces of the E9th pier are dredged to 16-17 feet according to http://www.charts.noaa.gov/BookletChart/14839_BookletChart.pdf

Remember: It's the Year of the Snake

The Goodtime III uses the east side of E9 Street. How much is it's draft?

That Booklet Chart map is a weird combination of updated nautical features and out-of-date land features.  (No Key Tower, Steelyard Commons, old street grid at Gateway).  Obviously its for nautical purposes, but its an interesting mish-mash.

I thought that whole area was required to be dredged to 24 feet?

The chart identifies prominent and unmistakeable near-the-water features that mariners can use to take bearings. It's not a travel guide. :)

Key Tower would be the best beacon on all of Lake Erie, no?

Key Tower would be the best beacon on all of Lake Erie, no?

Theoretically yes; but how often is the top lost in fog/clouds?  In any case, NOAA doesn't go far inland looking for landmarks.  Here's a section of the NYC East River, as an example; nothing more than a block from the water is shown.

5-1-9.jpg

One exception that I know of used to exist; the eastern approaches to the Red Sea used to show "Bumfuq" as a inland town in Egypt.  Generations of USN quartermasters got a chuckle out of that.

Remember: It's the Year of the Snake

OMG, for decades I've heard people making joking references to remote towns as being "Bumfuq, Egypt." I had no idea this was a real place!

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Bumfuq, Timbuktu, and Walla Walla, Washington are all real towns!
