I knew about the other two but not Bumfuq. Please tell me there's actually a Pigsknuckle, Arkansas.

Alas, "Bumfuq" is not real.  I believe it originated in the British military, spread to our military, and then to general use. It was on nautical charts as a little Navy Hydrographic Office joke; the joke was over when the Hydrographic Office was abolished.

I thought I saw a cruise ship parked at the West 3rd Street pier, in one of the aerial shots from the blimp during the Browns-Chargers game....

The top isn't lit up in the wee hours of the morning anymore, just the key, though Terminal Tower is.

What would need to happen to move the docks to E. 9th? If it's a dredging issue, would it be a meeting with the army corps of engineers? There's nothing at the W. 3rd street dock for people not from Cleveland to have a glimpse at and say, "wow". It's more like "...oh", and perception is everything.

I was driving up West 25th yesterday behind a semi truck with large John Deere combine on the trailer. Looked brand new. I didn't follow it past Lorain but I assume it was heading to the port. Not really news, just thought it was an unusual site driving through market square. ?

I spy a Great Lakes cruise ship (just now)...

...Which would have a greater impact on visitors if it was located at E. 9th.

Where you could have a true intermodal terminal unlike any in the USA -- cruise ships, ferry boats, cars, taxis/TNCs, bikes/scooters, passenger trains, light-rail trains, transit buses from throughout Northeast Ohio, and intercity buses to the nation.

Add air freight (and for that matter passengers) in and out of Burke.

I read somewhere (and I can’t find it right now) that the smaller ships will be docking on the river instead of at the port. I thought that was an interesting choice.

^ I believe those that tie up on the river are the Blount Line ships which travel NYC-Chicago via the Erie Canal and the Lakes.  They don't touch Canada so there is no need for them to use the customs and immigration facilities in Cleveland.

I’m not sure if you saw this, but @richNcincy doubled the photo storage limit after you brought it up.  Have you tried uploading pictures from your phone again since then?

It's great to see the return of cruising to Cleveland, and the Great Lakes in general, and I know these are high end cruises, but these ships look like old ferry boats.

As long as their patrons have open wallets, I don't care.

They do look are a little dated.  The boats remind me of the European river cruise ships.  River cruises that are very popular and bring in a lot of tourists.

They are ugly ducklings; but they're less than 20 years old and refurbished very nicely in 2014 (Victory I) and 2018 (Victory II).

“250-foot Bella Vita luxury yacht has a hot tub, movie theater and salon. What’s it doing hanging out in Lake Erie?”

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Boaters have been chattering all week about a 250-foot luxury charter yacht hanging out off the coast of Cleveland.

The Bella Vita is a 2009-built pleasure craft under a Cayman Islands flag, which rents for more than $700,000 a week, according to Moran Yacht and Ship. The boat boasts six staterooms and room for 22 staff members, a hot tub on the sun deck, a beauty salon, movie theater, the interior of a “grand country home” and plenty of water toys.

Wanted to get some thoughts on what this might mean for other projects since i thought this was big news. This seemed to be merely a blip last Monday.

To me it sounds like they will have to do what KJP suggested with the rail lines in the port which should have positive effects for other rail and Amtrak that comes through Cleveland.

I saw the Bella Vita this past weekend evening and it was mighty impressive in person. Nothing was going on Saturday night on the boat, but a few of the windows had lights on closer to the dock near the Powerhouse. Essentially it was a mansion and the windows I could see in were the garage... complete with at least one additional boat, a raft, and no less than two jet skis.

Not sure yet. Right now, OmniTrax acquired Cleveland Commercial Railroad (CCR), which has switching rights at the port of Cleveland and leases two rail lines on the southeast side of Greater Cleveland. The two rail lines are connected to each other but not to the port. Nor are they connected to OmniTrax existing rail assets which is primarily the old Newburgh & South Shore Railroad (N&SS). It has rights of way in the area where Cuyahoga Heights, Newburgh Heights and Cleveland's Slavic Village meet. So now OmniTrax has three distinct, disconnected operations in Greater Cleveland. It is possible that the old N&SS and the former CCR could be connected by restoring a half-mile of track parallel to East 76th and Jones Road, while getting permission from Norfolk Southern to cross their busy mainline at grade. If NS isn't willing to give that permission, then perhaps they might be willing to get NS permission to building 1 mile alongside their right of way to a point just north of Union Avenue where it could join with an an existing CCR right of way that crosses the NS mainline. Now, that doesn't get you to the port of Cleveland, but it does get CCR customers to a navigable waterway (the Cuyahoga in the industrial Flats). What I would also love to see is NS giving OmniTrax trackage rights to reach the port of Cleveland.

^So, if I understand what you're saying, the OmniTrax deal doesn't really position it to "double the cargo traffic at the port" as claimed in the article?

^^Thanks KJP.   The reason i suspect something is up is this seems to be a well capitalized and shrewd logistics company seeking to double the amount of goods through the port. If it was easy it would’ve been done already.  I don’t think they buy into the Cleveland port railroad without having done due diligence on how they can make infrastructure improvements and add trackage rights to their connecting short lines, and understanding how much all that will cost and time-frame to complete it.  It seems like something to keep an eye on.

If it does, it would do it in a way that isn't clear to me.

The port is engaged in conversations with the railroads about Flats-area access, but I'm not privy to what's being discussed. So it's possible they are referring to something more that's yet to be revealed publicly.

FYI, not necessarily port 'news' per se, but the USS Indianapolis will be visiting the port in the next couple days (they're currently a day behind): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Indianapolis_(LCS-17)

It was just commissioned this weekend and is making it's way to Jacksonville via the Great Lakes.

Looks like she's arrived:

Marine forecast is for 60 mph winds and 20 foot waves tonight on Lake Erie!   Those kids will probably be glad to be docked!

I plan on taking a drive around and checking out the waves from Edgewater and downtown--the best I can see them!

Just got a tour, it leaves at 3 today if anyone wants to snap a pic before she leaves! Impressive piece of equipment!
