Yes!  Very nice photo.

For being a suburb, Mariemont is a great community... that town square is extremely functional and I like their theater slightly more than the Esquire.

^

That's because Mariemont uses traditional town planning methods that were thrown out after World War II.

What's ironic about the whole thing is that most architects and planners would say that Mariemont "breaks all the rules."  Mariemont is all about creating a special place, rather than following zoning and architectural norms.

Its time for something harder. Here is a oddly cropped photo of a catholic parish significant to my family. Give me the name or the intersection at which it sits.

I wanna say High St. in Hamilton, just before you reach the RR tracks heading into town.  There are a few places of worship right in a row on the north side of the road.

^Nope, but not too bad a guess.

Hint: It is totally surrounded by the City of Cincinnati.

Vine St & Township Ave in Elmwood Place?

^Yep. Whos got the name?

St. Inkaelin's?  Wasn't he a scholar and martyr?

St. Aloysius (sp?)  Is the hispanic ministry centered there now?

^I don't know about the hispanic ministry, but you've got the name.

St. Inkaelin's?  Wasn't he a scholar and martyr?

Oh, the humor or a former seminary student, lol. St. Kaelin, better known as a my gg grandfather, was in the orphage there for some years.

Mr. Anderson, take it!

Since this has been dead for a while, how about we give a go at reviving it?  Staying with the church theme:

Is that a vinyl siding addition?

My guess is that it is a Presbyterian church on E. Hollister.

Actually, I went down Hollister this afternoon, and this is not it.  Not sure where this is.

Is that a vinyl siding addition?

Well....why not?!?!?  Its more economical that way :-/

A tad crooked, but this is a little-known street and I've always liked this view:

I think the above shot is Mohawk Street looking down toward McMicken and is that church in Winton Place?

Sorry, I forgot to give the answer...it's St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, and it's in Avondale, right on Reading...it sets back from the street a good ways, which is probably what threw folks off, because it is right on a main drag...

Here's a pbase gallery showing the interior and close-ups of the stained glass windows...definitely a beautiful church...

Oh, and regarding the addition - I'm pretty sure that section is original to the church, because the sanctuary is behind there...don't know what the deal is with the siding, though...here's a close-up of that section:

...and here's a crappy shot from my car this morning, just to put the church in its context...it's just north of Rockdale on Reading (google map here)

>I think the above shot is Mohawk Street looking down toward McMicken and is that church in Winton Place?

Nope.  It's quite deceptive, it's about 3/4 mile away from where you are talking about.

Or prehaps an addition that happened not too long after the church was built. The fact that the tower is located at the break, and the exterior changes makes me believe this must be so.

My church was added onto about 30 years after completion in 1865, and there are few clues to tell. You'd never know it inside, unless you got out a tape and measured between the stained glass windows, which are closer in the addition. Outside, they stuccoed, and later permastoned the exterior, which hides the seam significantly.

^Yeah, you're right...there's no reason the original church couldn't have been the rectangular box, and the sanctuary and everything got moved back with the addition.  And actually, the stained glass windows to the sides of the sanctuary are just color globs, nothing like the rest of the windows...they did a good job matching the roof, but yeah, I bet you're right...

I think that is Rice street looking southwest towards Mulberry.

I'm going to post a picture, because I am pretty sure I am right about Rice Street, and I will not be able to post photos from my other computer tomorrow..

By the way, the Rice Street area is really cool because the hills are so steep there, and you are basically right under Christ Hospital.  It kinda feels like you are back in a holler with the wood frame single family houses and the winding street that connects to Auburn.  I suppose the rehabs may someday reach to this area if Mulberry continues to improve.

Ah, Rice Street - I see it now that you mention Christ Hospital...it's fascinating, so steep...I remember it from when I took the pictures of Inwood Village posted in this thread...

As for the cemetery, it isn't Walnut Hills Cemetery, is it?

^No.

Clue, the writing on the stones is hebrew.  I will post surrounding photos later if no one gets it.

That little cemetary is in Betts-Longworth.  Clark Street, maybe?

Yeah, it's Rice St., and I agree that I bet in 20 years it will be quite different.

Yes Kendall, it is a jewish cemetery on the corner of Central Avenue and Twelfth?  At the edge of Betts Longworth area.

These two pics were taken on a street in Cincinnati about 20' apart.

Bonus if you can name the restaurant pictured in the second pic.

the restraurant looks like Scotti's so i guess vine street.

The tile work is from the alley behind Scotti's and the other photo is from the end of the alley at Court Street.

I don't know if that counts as a correct answer but I'll post a picture anyway.  Sorry if this doesn't count.

Looks like this is part of The Windings in Clifton (near the Mt Storm entrance), right?

yep

How about this one? Identify what building this is part of:  (I'll try to get back on tomorrow to see if anyone gets this right, but if I don't get on here in time, someone else feel free to post another picture)

Is it McMicken Hall at UC?

I don't know if that counts as a correct answer but I'll post a picture anyway.  Sorry if this doesn't count.

Dude the Windings is creepy as hell. A subdivision with that big old church or whatever it is, as the centerpeice. It looks like some crazy cult group of people would live there. Plus, every house looks exactly the same. If I lived in a mansion I would not want my house the exact same design and color as everyone else. I've never seen anything that disturbing.

Yep, that's the top of McMicken Hall.  Edale, you're up.

Amen...that place freaks me out on a number of levels, including seeing garage doors carved into the side of the monastery...but mostly it's the horrific housing stock surrounding the poor building...ick ick ick...ick...

^yep, but the old monastery is pretty cool.  I picked that picture because of the absence of the statute.

Thought I'd see if anyone were interested in reviving this thread...can you name where this shot was taken from?

The Jackson Hill Park/Dorsey St. section of Mt. Auburn?

Yes, indeed!  Nicely done!

  • 4 months later...

This might be too easy, but where was this shot taken from?

CINCINNATI.jpg
