August 17, 200618 yr However, upon leaving L.I., there's little choice if you value your safety; the long walk back to U.Circle is a necessity. Meaning??? Everyone's perception of "safe" is different. Meaning, what everone's talking about: standing on a dank, isolated, very lightly used rapid platform, esp during the evening or night.
August 17, 200618 yr hmm however to be fair its had a considerable amount of more people using it ever since those new Case dorms have been built.... hmm so does TOD work? heh
August 17, 200618 yr hmm however to be fair its had a considerable amount of more people using it ever since those new Case dorms have been built.... hmm so does TOD work? heh well the RTA predicted a peak in 120th users after PBL was completed.......
August 17, 200618 yr PBL? I doubt that would substantiall impact users of the 120th Street station. Sounds like a load of bull to me! Now, the new dorms...that makes some sense.
August 17, 200618 yr OK, if you've finished drinking your PBR's and eating your PB&J's, I wants to get back to da subject! And, sorry, but what is PBL anyway? Peter B. Lewis? Peter B. Lewis what? August 18, 200618 yr From todays PD Editorial section: Perfecting the Circle Bringing order to a street layout bordering on chaos would be a great boost to a vital Cleveland neighborhood Friday, August 18, 2006 Thanks to its potent blend of top-shelf medicine, culture and education, Uni versity Circle just might hold this region's best hope for an economic renaissance. That's especially true if you extend the traditional definition of the neighborhood a little farther west to include the Cleveland Clinic, another medical research powerhouse, which already has 17,000 employees and continues to expand its already impressive campus. December 21, 200618 yr Today will mark the re-opening of the new Adelbert Road Bridge between Little Italy and University Circle. It will also mark the indefinite closing of the Cornell Road Bridge to vehicular traffic. A final inspection of the Adelbert Road Bridge is scheduled for today, after which the power to the bridge lights will be connected and the bridge should be opened (ideally, by evening rush hour). Design work for the replacement of the Cornell Road Bridge continues, with plans to have it under construction by the end of 2007, although financing is apparently a significant concern.
December 21, 200618 yr basically... Cornell will still be open to pedestrian traffic and Adelbert is much improved, though not as much as was originally planned..."value engineering" and what not

February 24, 200718 yr Anyone else read this and wretch? As much as I appreciate the publicity for the many attractions and events in the Circle, the fact that the "other options" and "tips" don't include transit induced me to fire off a letter to the PD. Plus, they grossly underestimated parking capacity in the Circle by a factor about about 8! Circle's big shows squeeze parkers Saturday, February 24, 2007 What does it mean when there's a ton of great events in University Circle? Parking will most likely be a nightmare this weekend. The area has more than 1,500 parking spaces, and the string of special shows opening and continuing this week are going to make empty ones hard to find. More at cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com
February 24, 200718 yr Map Boy I'm really glad that I wasn't the only one p-ed off about that article - how ignorant of the PD. I also sent them a letter to the editor this morning. Frustrating.

February 24, 200718 yr how did you contact them?? i tried to earlier Just send a letter to the editor at: letters @plaind.com Mr. O'Donnell's e-mail is probably: podonnell@ plaind.com
February 28, 200718 yr I sent the email to [email protected], [email protected] and [email protected], all posted on the website, and two of them bounced back. So, I don't even know if anyone ever got my letter. Bah!
February 28, 200718 yr I used the form on cleveland.com & I know it worked because they called me yesterday to verify my information & let me know that it is being considered for publication. http://www.cleveland.com/plaindealer/lettertoeditor.ssf
February 28, 200718 yr well, either they never got mine or yours was better... or, mine was just too saucy!
February 28, 200718 yr My girlfriend's parents were in town this past weekend and so we all went to see the Monet exhibit, Orchid Mania then hit Severance for a piano concerto. Her Dad saw that dumb article in the morning and freaked out a little, but we had no parking problems at all. The article failed to mention that a national spokesman for Intelligent Design was speaking at Strosacker Saturday evening as well -- now THAT'S something to be worried about.

I wouldn't be surprised, if the article had a reverse/negative affect and kept people away because of the potential - scratch that - perceived lack of parking.
February 28, 200718 yr well, either they never got mine or yours was better... or, mine was just too saucy! Saucy == Map Boy Jax, good to hear that your visitors didn't have any troubles. Was that speaker Dr. Mike Behe? He was at Strosacker on Monday & I felt that it was good to have him - diversity of thoughts!

February 28, 200718 yr Hmm, I think you're right about it being on Monday Jeffrey. I could've sworn I saw it originally scheduled for Saturday but not according to the CWRU Event's calendar -- Date: Monday, February 26, 2007 Time: 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. Complete Description: The Case community is invited to hear and speak with Dr. Michael J. Behe, who will be presenting “The Argument for Intelligent Design in Biology” on Monday, February 26th at Strosacker Auditorium from 7-9 pm. He is currently a Professor of Biology at Lehigh University and author of the New York Times bestseller, Darwin’s Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution which argues that due to the property of irreducible complexity, living systems at the molecular level are the result of a deliberate intelligent design.
March 2, 200718 yr Nice! The PD printed our very own JeffreyT's letter! I've heard from a number of other people - suburbanites and urbanites alike - who wrote letters in response to this piece by the PD. Go Cleveland! Take RTA to your next University Circle outing Thursday, March 01, 2007 Patrick O'Donnell's article about parking issues in University Circle (Saturday) glaringly missed a huge potential solution: public transportation. This sustainable alternative would eliminate any traffic or parking issues that any visitors would have. More than a dozen Regional Transit Authority bus lines run through the heart of this district, and all of the museums are easily accessible from the Red Line rail, which has two stops in the neighborhood. Traveling to the museums is quite simple because, through its membership with University Circle Inc., the Circle Link shuttle runs continuously from the museums and the Red Line University Circle station. More at cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com
March 2, 200718 yr University Circle Inc. is also responding with a press release about transportation alternatives (including more parking options and public transit) and has posted a more comprehensive map on their website: http://www.universitycircle.org/content/UserFiles/File/parking%20map%20FINAL2.pdf The main message is that there are lots of options and no one should be discouraged from coming to the Circle when there's a ton to do. The solution: plan ahead! The interactive map feature at universitycircle.org has both parking and public transportation layers that can help people do so.
March 2, 200718 yr Awesome letter JT! "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
March 2, 200718 yr Well, none of the 5 addresses I sent my letter to at the PD elicited a response and my feelings are now officially hurt... ... This email is in direct response to today's short piece by Patrick O'Donnell on the big events and parking problems in University Circle. In general, it is a plea to the writers to broaden their perspectives in regard to transit. I am very well acquainted with University Circle and its institutions and while I do sincerely appreciate all the publicity that the PD gives to these world class venues, I am concerned with the message you are sending that the only way to get to this immensely busy locale is by car. In your "other options" section, you suggest that visitors simply try another weekend. However, as is true with much of the city and its major destinations, our RTA provides a plethora of options for individuals and groups to travel by bus or train for a reasonable price. University Circle, in particular, is served by more than a dozen bus lines and the Red Line rapid. Some of these buses run through the heart of the Circle, while the rapid stops on the fringe, but is served by several free "circulator" routes that take passengers right to the venues they are looking for. For those who are able to walk, both stops are less than a 15 minute walk to various destinations. The website you referenced for University Circle Inc. provides a comprehensive map with all of these routes for visitors to reference, as does the RTA's www.riderta.com. As University Circle continues to grow with more employees, residents and visitors, it is imperative that we promote transit as a viable alternative to private automobiles. Though the Circle currently has more than 10,000 parking spaces (yes, TEN thousand), more parking is not the solution to congestion problems. In addition, the Euclid Corridor construction is now in full swing as it runs through University Circle. When mentioning traffic issues for drivers in the Circle, it might be helpful to note that Euclid is down to two lanes. Thanks for listening!
March 2, 200718 yr Don't be hurt Map Boy, you're loved here more than any letter-to-the-editor could lead to.
March 2, 200718 yr ^Yes, but in that non-threatening, non-harassing sort of way :-D Seriously - thank you both, great letters on both counts! clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
March 15, 200718 yr For those of you who want to get or remain involved in the process of making the Circle more accessible, this relates directly to many of the projects we're talking about in University Circle. From the VA expansion to the potential developments on the West Quad and in the Upper Chester neighborhood, CMNH and CMA expansions and the ever-growing Clinic campus.
March 30, 200718 yr This meeting took place last night and has been touched upon in the other University Circle thread. I'll post images this weekend and give more feedback from the meeting. For starters, there was lots of response from the public, both on the positive and negative side. The meeting ended with Councilwoman Sabra Pierce Scott insisting that we'll come back as many times as is necessary to get the best outcome to satisfy as many people as possible.

Speaking of SGS, I like her. MGD what is your opinion of her? I feel like she is anti Fannie Lewis and any of the "old guard" and actually wants to partner with residents and business to improve neighborhoods.
March 31, 200718 yr SGS? "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
March 31, 200718 yr Anyone catch that story in the paper last week about the 17 yr old thief who was shot by the off-duty officer? There was a big to-do about it at the last council meeting. The newspaper article made it out to be that the black councilpeople were mad at the white councilpeople for not sticking up for them. Actually, that's not what happened at all. The truth is that the black councilpeople are all ticked off that Zack Reed keeps going to the Call & Post and saying that the black councilpeople are not sticking up for their constituents, etc. Strange how the PD (or, one reporter) twisted that one.

April 1, 200718 yr ^yes there is. I mentioned it here because some asked about SPS. SPS was called out in the article about the shooting.
July 3, 200816 yr Update on the E. 120th Street (new Mayfield) station: The Planning & Development Committee reviewed Request for Proposal (RFP) candidates for architecture/engineering design services to relocate the East 120th Street Station about 1,000 feet to Mayfield Road and to reconstruct the transit track bridge. The proposed vendor – City Architecture -- is expected to be voted on July 15. (from the July 1 RTA News) The second in a series of community meetings on the $10 million Cedar-University Station upgrade and renovation will be held on Wednesday, July 23rd at Judson Manor (1890 E. 107th Street). I will post the precise meeting time soon, but mark your calendars!
July 3, 200816 yr FYI, to add on to MapBoys post, yesterday Jerry posted a link to the RTA site that shows the Mayfield (and east 55 street) station.

(from the July 1 RTA News) Any sense how faithful to the Studio Techne plan (which I think is totally awesome) City Architecture's design will have to be (assuming City Arch is approved)? Do you know if Studio Techne threw its hat in the ring for the design contract or if they were ineligible because of there master planning contract? This project is high stakes!

StudioTechne's plan was very modern and cool. CA is not very good at that sort of thing.
July 3, 200816 yr ^yeah, exactly what I was thinking. The Studio Techne plan was also super ambitious, so my expectations are...tempered. For both the E120/Mayfield and Cedar stations, I hope the designs allow for incremental add-ons as the real estate market recovers and evolves- both seem to have excellent opportunities for adjacent private development.
July 15, 200816 yr As for the July 23rd public meeting time... it's 6:00 at Judson Manor. Let's see some UO representation!
September 4, 200915 yr I did try to search for any updates on the construction of the RTA station on E 120th St but could not find anything that is recent. Does anyone know if this is progressing and when work would start?
