I'm glad to hear it's doing well. thats the best to be an all day all night type coffee joint — with drinks for later for the day drinking and creative types and then for the after work crowd. so looks like they did it right. i guess he can sell merch too and make it even more of a destination.

June 10, 20214 yr Now this sounds awesome... and will fill a big gap in the main FEB building! "Cocky’s Bagels to open second location in Flats East Bank" https://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/2021/06/cockys-bagels-to-open-second-location-in-flats-east-bank.html A few highlights: "Like the first Cocky’s Bagels location, the new shop will feature delectable bagel sandwiches and other breakfast dishes, incorporating bowl menu items like salads, power bowls and acai bowls, along with ice cream and waffles The new shop will incorporate a full drinks menu with a focus on what Bata calls “boozy brunch type of drinks” -- fresh mimosas, spiced coffee drinks and more. Bata envisions the new business concept as “Cocky’s Hangout,” with late-night food service running until 3 a.m. on the weekends, she said. It will also offer brunches, utilizing a new patio located on the waterfront."
June 14, 20213 yr (6-13-21) At the June 4th Planning Commission meeting, a ~20' tall "electronic message board" was approved for the middle of the Old River Road / Front Avenue roundabout (pictured above). Here is a rendering from the presentation:
June 14, 20213 yr Not a huge fan of the sign board, but whatever, these look awesome! I do wish there were some color flair, but at the same time not sure how they'd be able to do that and it not look cheesy. Hate to think towards winter, but it'll be another cool spot to look out on the river as the snow comes down!

June 14, 20213 yr Hey at least they were able to get them to reduce the size from their initial proposal. Still a strange location regardless.

I think that would've been a good place for 4-5 interactive kiosks, with maps, info, and historical context. I think that would've provided some ad space, while still bring real value to visitors without absolutely bombing the aesthetic
June 21, 20213 yr Yeah, some sort of public art in the center would’ve been the common sense choice. At least people will know where they’re at now! 🤦🏻
June 22, 20213 yr What is the reverse side of this LED sign board? Is it double sided? An extremely odd choice for a roundabout that calls for something attractive from all sides I would have loved to have the 60-foot-high bucket arm of a Hulett that was originally proposed to be reassembled by Cumberland for North Coast Harbor be installed where the sign board is planned. July 7, 20213 yr The new restaurants are really coming along! Exteriors look mostly finished, and now it seems like the bulk of the work is happening inside. Hopefully they’ll be wrapped up soon!
July 7, 20213 yr ^ Agreed they look great! I hate to be a Debbie Downer but I really have to think they screwed the pooch by not getting these on pace to open this summer. Otherwise, it looks awesome.

Agree 100% - the addition of these buildings along with the scale in comparison to other buildings are on point. However the selected color palette is lackluster. These should be - and can be - statement pieces to the entire complex/community but in their current state are just bleh. Edited July 9, 20213 yr by OHinMD

July 26, 20213 yr The Flats are improving quite nicely! I made a stop down there while my family was visiting Cleveland to try MGK's coffee shop embarrassingly enough 😁 I was really blown away by how huge of a crowd there was there on a Sunday morning! I expected it to be a tacky tourist trap, but I actually really recommend it - the drinks were very unique and creative compared to most coffee shops, which I appreciate. They couldve gotten lazy with it and still got customers, but they definitely put a lot of care into the place. They also served cocktails, but sadly I'm still a bit shy of being 21 to try those! But yeah, the line was absolutely insane, so make sure you have time set aside if you go there. Anyways, it's great to see places like that open in Downtown Cleveland since they generate a ton of foot traffic to the area and get visitors from the suburbs, and out of towners, to come into Downtown. I think the Flats should try to keep attracting "touristy" places such as 27 Club that have the potential to draw in a huge crowd of visitors into the neighborhood. We also took a walk down to the water, and I love how nicely the waterfront finally looks - it's great to finally be able to get riverfront/lakefront dining options in Cleveland. Also, my dad (who spent a lot of time down there in the 90s!) couldn't even recognize the Flats anymore now that all the seedy bars have been replaced by modern buildings and yuppie restaurants!

Couldn’t agree with you more. I stepped in the MGK place today for my very first visit and it was very crowded. Agree that it is a unique place that could’ve taken the easy way, but did not. The food and drinks are very well done. Highly recommend the Hot Chicken sandwich. More places like that would be welcome all over Downtown. The Good Night John Boy place is also extremely unique and worth a visit. We stopped on Sunday afternoon and to my surprise it was open so I took the chance to explore it which is something I would not have done on a night visit (the lines are too long).
