  • BTW, the reason why I was asking someone this morning about the status of Flats East Bank Phase 3B (the 12-story apartment building) is because Wolstein is getting involved in another big project. Whe

Looks like they're building a great big pool table!

Pregunta:

Looking at the Flats East Bank website (http://www.flatseast.com/flats-cleveland/index.htm), I'm a tad confused which images are applicable to the first phase. I'm just trying to figure out what this bad boy is going to look like in 2 years, but the site kind of commingles the images of the different phases, so it's hard to visualize it.

The structure being framed right now.... that is the 'connector' between the hotel and office, correct?  If so, glad to see that the office building is really going to be wedged against that retainer wall.... although I suppose that will detract some from its perceived (not actual) height.  But I further suppose that may allow for a bit more height as well because the retainer wall might bear some of the stress/weight?

^I think the taller structure is just the building core (elevator shafts, stairwells, mechanical, etc...).  It looks like the concrete pad encompasses the length and width of the office tower.  The renderings don't show it flush with the eastern retaining wall.

In other words, the area that you see poured makes up the footprint of the office building only.  The hotel will be on the corner of W10th and Main Ave.

Correct!

How did you know the route? Were you running after it? ;-)

I'll post pics later; by happy accident I was running late to work. Ended up seeing the base of the tower crane on a truck coming off the Shoreway, south on West 3rd and west onto Lakeside :-)

What color was it?  The very extremely nerdy side of me is hoping for a yellow one.  I am sick of the blue ones we see in UC.

Thanks for the update MayDay.  Can't wait to see it flying!

Alright, time for some photos. As I said - I was fuming because some knucklehead decided that the AM rush hour was a great time to route hundreds of racing cyclists (dear god, we can't ask a single one of them to stop at a redlight - they might not shave a few seconds off their time!!!  ), and of course the morning monsoon didn't help matters. So as I'm sitting at the light at West 3rd and Lakeside, I saw it - and figured, if I'm going to be late - at least I saw the crane arrive :-) Since I had pole position, I got to follow it along Lakeside at about 1mph until I had to zip onto the Shoreway. Pardon the atrocious quality - cell phone camera and monsoon:

I was thinking the same thing...Whiskey Island and Flats West need to be connected to Flats East by a pedestrian/biking bridge. I know one is already planned for Whiskey Island, but both areas area way underserved for pedestrians.

^^Thanks MayDay!  Looks like the crane that was at the Pinnacle.  You getting down there anytime soon for a photo of it (I guess I'm cracking the wip)?

Or by water taxi/ferry service. There used to be a water taxi between the two sides of the flats when there were two sides..... but to be effective, service must be very cheap and frequent....

Holy Moses Water Taxi. Cost $2 each way.

Holy Moses Water Taxi. Cost $2 each way.

And serves Holy Moses?

Tell me about it...literally!

Ironically, that was the one day I didn't bike to work this week, making my trek via car a real pain and take even longer than via bike.

First, if you have a huge bike event for charity, at least have the courtesy to tell the local radio stations so we can re-route accordingly.

Second, if you actually TELL the local media what the event is, it's FREE PUBLICITY. So instead of leaving stupid WTAM and the like wondering if it's Critical Mass?! they can actually be plugging YOUR charity.

For a moment I had no idea what you're talking about. But then I quit drinking eight years ago.

No, they didn't serve any kind of drink on board -- you BEER FREAK!!!  :drunk:

Ohhh, I don't know - I mean, what's that website I have that needs updating? You know, the one that ended up landing me a book deal and having one of my photos broadcasted to 50 million viewers in 170 different countries? Something about "skyscrapers"?!? ;-)

Yes, I will be making frequent pilgrimages to get photos of the construction - it's not a huge building but it's been too damn long!

Yeah, that website.  Right, I remember it.  The one I used to check into constantly to get updates on Clevelands dt construction nearly daily back in 01 and 02.  The site that lead me here.  And you are right.  It has been too too long.  Since I have been active on this site, this is the biggest thing to hit Cleveland.  I am sure that is open to debate.  However, as far as visibility to the rest of the people in the metro region, I would say it is.  Especially southsiders and westsiders.  I look forward to your updates.  Thanks MayDay!

Thanks MayDay!  So, this is presently just the office tower going up, and not the hotel, correct?

Not positive about this, but I believe the red tower crane was headed to the MM/CC, not FEB

LOL, I meant The

Yeah, I was probably wrong.

That crane will be used to construct the Tower Crane.

That crane was just being set up (but still down) on Friday and then it was actually up on Saturday. They are really trucking along with that project.

The yellow crane from ALL is enormous.  It's fully erected today and visible from at least a mile away.

Saw it as well this morning from my place and it looks great.

Assembly of the tower crane is proceeding smartly. It's well above the elevation of the Main Avenue Bridge at this point.

Well thank God it's proceeding smartly.  If not, it would be on the Main Avenue Bridge!  Hopefully we'll have some pics soon.

From where I'm sitting now, the yellow crane no longer rises above the bridge but the red crane is well above.  I'm assuming this is because as someone said before, the yellow crane is to build the main red crane?  Although it does not appear as if the red crane is finished being built yet.

^You're right - the tower crane's shaft might be as tall as its going to get, but they still need to add the operator cab, jibs, counterweights, etc. Anyway, it's visible from the Interbelt bridge, the Shoreway near Edgewater, etc. Here are some ghastly cellphone camera shots from today:

whats that boxed up structure going to be? the aloft hotel or the office building?

Thanks Mayday for the pics.

Love the pics!!!  I was able to see it from the Interbelt Bridge on my way into work today.  Its been a while since we've seen a tower crane here in Cleveland!!!   It's a nice sight to see.

Here is one from Prospect.  Pretty cool to see sticking up.  I haven't seen any renderings showing the new buildings from other areas.  I can't imagine you'll be able to see much of it from this viewpoint, although would be cool if you could.

Is the crane currently taller than the building will be when finished?  If not, then you should be able to see a lot of the building from that vantage point.

^yeah i was thinking the same thing...if you can see the crane from this vantage point, why would you not be able to see at least a portion of the building?
