Ha... it was taken very fast.  I got my camera on and shot quickly.  I missed the building on my first try but was able to see the building again as the train made that tight turn.

I also have to agree; this shot is very appealing, esp given the interior of the Rapid plus the different expressions/reactions of the passengers to the construction -- informational and human, too.

Man, it really is kind of "pure Cleveland," isn't it?  Past, present and future, layered in the background.  The giant pile of port matter looming and the varied reactions.  And of course, the Browns hat.  Lucky, but really nice shot.

Cool pic! Construction update pics are always good, but when they are viewed from vehicles, buildings etc. from everyday routine Cleveland, it gives it much more context.

One other consequence of the new building will probably be a drastic decrease in value of the digital billboard on the west exterior of Cleveland Browns Stadium. I think it will block its view from inbound Shoreway vehicles for much of the way across the bridge.

 

Id take a building over a billboard anyday!

There are two underpasses in the north side of the loop. Plus you can drive a truck under the north end of the long snaking bridge. And there is a rail freight siding.

The second picture there make me wish that the port could just magically move,and we could have that area for development

^I think the second picture would be just as visually stunning if there were some awesome looking ships loading/unloading at the port next to a brand new ferry seaport.

After construction of the port loop track is done this winter, you might get your wish. Back to the Flats.

How often will the windows in the new building be covered in dust kicked up from industrial traffic inside the loop?  Maybe it will won't rise very far and just settle on the lower levels and all the outside dinning areas + parked cars.  Stock in Windex might be a good investment...

Has anyone figured out how tall the building is going to be? I have been hearing 380ft? I hope its quite a bit taller than the Pinnacle building...

^I'm still waiting to hear back from my contacts, but it should top out above the Pinnacle. Keep in mind that height changes aren't uncommon during construction - the Federal Courthouse Tower had a floor lopped off to offset the expenses related to (what else?) excavation.

 

And in other news - ladies and gentlemen, we have structural steel going up! :-) Looks like we have three parking levels, and the elevator core is at the 6th floor:

The Wolstein Group and Fairmount Properties hope to start construction in the spring on apartments at the Flats East Bank, a mixed-use neighborhood on the Cuyahoga River. Wolstein plans 150 to 175 units at a time, with five stories of apartments built over restaurants and stores.

 

The Flats project site, where construction crews are building an office tower, hotel, restaurants and a parking garage, could accommodate 600 units of housing.

 

"I'm not going to rush it," Wolstein said. "I'm going to do it right. But it would certainly make me happy if we could have all our ducks in a row for the spring."

Let's hope Wolstein sticks to this schedule for new rental construction ... has his'dispute' with the Port Authority been resolved?

18 stories, right?  That sounds like somewhere between 200 and 250 feet.

^18 office floors plus 3 parking floors - then there's the antenna/spires so it's hard to say. Looking at the current webcam, it looks like the elevator core is up to 8 stories.

Rush it? That's a real laugh...on a project that was originally conceived....what? Over 10 years ago...or close to that? Wrong choice of words there Bart!

There are going to be 3 garage levels + 18 stories + 1 mechanical floor (which from the renderings, looks like it might be 1.5 levels) + 1 penthouse level (which MIGHT just end up being the mechanical floor) + the spire at the top.

I would hope the middle lot or the top right one. Those two would fit in nicely with the office tower and hotel. Anywhere else would be too far from the action to work in my opinion. Plus the retail would feed off of each other if the buildings were close.

That's 18 stories on top of the brightly lit parking decks. And compare the building to the tall Main Avenue/Shoreway bridge to the right. If you use that bridge and you pass by the construction crane, it gives you an appreciation of the height -- despite that the ground is some 7-10 stories below the bridge deck.

I'm curious about the distinction between "lawn" and "meadow."  None of that stuff can be built for free, particularly the surface parking, so it seems really wasteful to put it in if the plan is to add residential ASAP.  There is public money involved in this project.  I'd prefer it were used exclusively on things we actually want.  If that means the muddy construction site persists a little longer, I'm OK with that.  Money doesn't grow on trees... or in this case, on fields of grass.

Other than the waterfront line and road maintenance, how much public money is actually in FEB? Do we know? I'm just curious.

It will be from the west.  I love how the shoreway lets you bob and weave through buildings, and this will add a lot to that sensation.

I can see the top of the tower crane from various vantage points as I drive around town (eastbound on the shoreway, driving over the inner belt bridge, of course driving west on the shoreway) so I imagine it will be prominent, especially since it will be the only tall building in that area.

Looks like the steel is about level with the Shoreway bridge deck, so I should start to see it peeking up above the sides of the bridge during my morning commutes.

 

Nice photo. Pretty obvious it was taken during a Browns game. What else would cause parking on the port property to fill up and cause people to stream out of charter buses?!

You can see the construction (not just the crane) now from Public Square.  I tried snapping a shot of it with my phone while waiting for the Healthline but the quality was too bad.... Stupid iPhone.  :x

I agree. It needs to be visable from many directions so as to direct attention and curiosity; and draw residents, newcomers, and visitors toward the FEB entertainment district...
