May 1, 201510 yr From a story about FEB: "Crop Rocks, a Haight-Ashbury-influenced eatery with a VW microbus parked out front as the valet waiting area; Crop Sticks, offering Asian food and a zen garden; and On Air, a hybrid of broadcast studio, event space and dining spot. The restaurants were dreamed up by Steve Schimoler of Crop Bistro Bar." http://cleveland.icito.com/headlines/first-look-apartment-leasing-starts-at-flats-east-bank-project-in-downtown-cleveland-photos/ This is almost as corny a concept as the crop idea that never sprouted in Waterloo. I thought the concept, concentrating an immense record collection in Waterloo was pretty cool. All of Waterloo has that unrefined, coolness factor still well intact. Now the microbus and the ancient Haight-Ashbury theme....well yeah that's entering the limits of cornball city.
May 1, 201510 yr I like the radio concept, how it invokes local history and culture. But I hate the idea of invoking the history and culture of some other city. How hard would it be to say Coventry or Hessler instead of Haight-Ashbury? It's not like we don't have our own hippie districts.

How hard would it be to say Coventry or Hessler instead of Haight-Ashbury? It's not like we don't have our own hippie districts. Exactly. I wish more businesses would try and make their own history, as opposed to going to the corporate well for bland ideas. What makes this even more ridiculous is that FEB is a historic district in its own right, with a downright amazing history. Why not play that up?

I bet FWD will spur a friendly rivalry across the river with Shooters. Seems like they're going for the same kind of atmosphere.
May 2, 201510 yr I bet FWD will spur a friendly rivalry across the river with Shooters. Seems like they're going for the same kind of atmosphere. They'll never be able to pull it off fully, because they can't dock as many (or perhaps none) boats on the east bank.

They'll never be able to pull it off fully, because they can't dock as many (or perhaps none) boats on the east bank. I would think that some boats will be able to be docked on the East Bank?? Maybe not 5-6 deep, but I'd think (or at least hope) that they could still dock over there. Maybe FWD wont fully compete with Shooters, but any little bit of competition should be healthy. Shooters has had many many years without any competition in the area. Hopefully a few new places across the river will be good for the West Bank as well!!!

Although it's been many years, if my memory serves me the East Bank was never able to raft boats and after a couple of incidents with freighters the Coast Guard did away with them entirely.
May 26, 201510 yr Damn, those are going up fast. Toby Keith's was just a shell of steel support beams just a couple weeks ago.
May 31, 201510 yr Well with Phase 2 scheduled to open over the summer looks like FEB is reworking their website and have now added a Phase 3 page and site plan. Describing that 'efforts are underway' for Phase 3 development including a theatre, retail and additional residences. Maybe that parking lot won't be a parking lot for long. http://flatseast.com/phase3/ Edit-failed at trying to sharpen up these images.

May 31, 201510 yr I likey what I see! I do wonder though would these plans change if Playhouse Square builds a theater or vice versa.

June 2, 201510 yr This one is really reminding me of a wider Avenue district now. Maybe I've just been away too long.
June 2, 201510 yr Are they still aiming for a July opening for phase 2? I'd love it if they were. I just don't see how with all the finishing work still needed to be done. Hope I'm wrong.
June 3, 201510 yr Wow! Even with all the construction that shot already looks amazing. Now imagine it with everything completed.
June 3, 201510 yr ^^In photo 2, is smaller building Zach Bruell's Alley Cat? ... I recall there being some unhappiness regarding Alley Cat's design among the relevant design commission... Apparently it was resolved.

Apparently it was resolved. The Planning Commission gave "conceptual approval" back in February so the project wouldn't fall behind schedule. It appears some of the details were adjusted without a public viewing.
June 3, 201510 yr I came across this initial design concept (second image) that incorporated more glass than the final design concept. I wonder why it changed? I prefer the original concept. The first image is what was submitted as final design
June 3, 201510 yr Author Great photos Dumbledore! This is going to be a sexier shot when the apartment building is open, lights are on and people are on the boardwalk..... June 3, 201510 yr a few days ago, while there was a lull b/w 2 thunderstorms. It's nice to see the boardwalk so far along!!!

It appears some of the details were adjusted without a public viewing. Thanks dave... Certainly the concept image was far more appealing than the thick-walled "final design concept" that the Planning Commission (as well as a number of UOers) had problems with. It's hard to tell from the actual building rising in the photo as to which version actually is being built, but it appears to be more in line with the concept image: thinner or fewer walls (with more internal structural supports), more glass and airy. But maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part.
June 3, 201510 yr Wonder if something is happening at the old Watermark location. I think that guy who recently surfaced and is behind the Rocbar/Odeon reopening owns that one too. He said he was looking for restauranteurs for the spaces on the river side. Maybe somethings up. Would like to see a Japenese steakhouse or BBQ there. Bubbas Q would be cool to bring downtown.
June 3, 201510 yr ^I'd love to see a classy restaurant go in Watermark's old spot. I really loved the Watermark -- great atmospherics; pretty good food.
June 3, 201510 yr I'd love that too, as long as a public boardwalk is put in to connect FEB with Settlers Landing Park.
June 3, 201510 yr I want to see a great authentic seafood restaurant that serves food and "feasts" such as the Crab Pot in Seattle. I feel a restaurant with this feel is missing in Cleveland especially downtown and would be great to have on the river. http://www.thecrabpotseattle.com/index
June 3, 201510 yr I kind of wish the new FEB boardwalk didn't have the fence and was open like the Shooters-FWB boardwalk, which allows boats to dock and boaters to climb right onto the boardwalk and into restaurants, etc., while vice versa, allowing restaurant waiters/waitresses to serve boaters on-board. Maybe I'm wrong, but it appears the FEB boardwalk fence would prevent this.

Coast guard rules due to many "incidents" with freighters.... That would be logical... I just note the yacht in the rendering near the Alley Cat restaurant. Also of note is that, even the old FEB, didn't have a substantial boardwalk like the one being built ... or in any way comparable to the one on FWB. There will, of course, be docking stations for the new Water Taxi at a designated location on FEB near the base of the MAB.

There were always other boats docked on that side as well.

At some point, in the later 1990's, I remember they banned all docking along the east bank due to prop wash from the freighters, and probably a few drunk sailors getting crushed to death between boats.
June 4, 201510 yr Anyone know if they are still serious about Building 11 in the Phase 2 drawings? It's the one north of the EY building that would go in the current parking lot next to the tracks.
June 4, 201510 yr Anyone know if they are still serious about Building 11 in the Phase 2 drawings? It's the one north of the EY building that would go in the current parking lot next to the tracks. Yes they are serious, still looking for a major tenant or two. EDIT: I'm actually surprised the building hasn't started. Last fall they were very close, courting a good sized lawfirm that ended up staying in their current space. The existing office tower is over 90% occupied at this point, only some smaller spaces left, half a floor on 12 or 14
