I feel like some of the posts here influence some decisions that are made by the power brokers in the city. Someone here posted this idea, but there was no discussion of it before. I love it, regardless.

Tony George plans at 1146 Old River Rd this 150-foot-tall billboard as a result of his legal agreement resulting from Irishtown Bend. In my opinion, this is an abomination.

Just got to this part I can’t believe it’s a real proposal, is April fools a week long event?

It was approved 5-1. Slife voted against it.

Ah TG... the billboard king.

Yes, it's tall enough to be seen from the Shoreway. Seems no one else wanted it.  George owns the land.

That looks awful. Aside from Councilman Slife, the lack of pushback on the location is just sad. Watching these meetings it gets more and more obvious how inconsistently the CPC treats projects.

Yes. Here are a couple of shots from the shoreway. This is 2/3 Bobby NEEDS to allow full demo of the dilapidated structure for Irishtown Bend. He now has this one and downtown above Harry Buffalo. One left. Let's hope the next one isn't worse than this.

Really wish Ohio would ban roadside billboards like other states. I think they are a huge distraction and ugly as hell especially electronic ones. If it's anything like the one on I think E9th and Prospect it'll blind every driver at night with how bright it is lol.

This might violate the federal Highway Beautification Act. I’m going to look into it because I would love to F him over 🙂

he said ODOT signed off on it

We’ll see if he’s being truthful. I dislike him enough to be a squeaky wheel lol

My hot take, unfortunately, is that it is likely permitted under the Act if the municipality allows it.

I really don't get how he gets 3 billboards for the removal of the one at Irishtown Bend with his ultimate choice where he gets to put them.

What a d**k move. This will look like absolute s**t.

It's definitely not great. I will just say though that this situation is about the city settling on the lesser of evils in terms of placement (hence the very little pushback)...there are other potential locations that would be worse. We'll see about the 3rd and final one though.

Staying positive by thinking about the beautiful and billboard-less park that we'll get soon in exchange...

Cleveland should prohibit billboards within city limits, at least in certain centralized areas.

He's like Trump lite. Does all kinds of crappy things and yet for some reason gets little pushback.

Cleveland planners OK 150-foot-tall billboard in Flats
By Ken Prendergast / April 5, 2024

Cleveland City Planning Commission today approved placing a 150-foot-tall pole-mounted billboard at a Flats East Bank property owned by an affiliate of controversial local businessman Tony George. It is the second of three billboards that George has received city permission to build in order to fulfill a court-approved settlement prior to demolishing an oft-vandalized building for the Irishtown Bend Park in Ohio City.

I am shocked and astonished by this move. How is this acceptable???

Are there worse locations? Right in the middle of a walkable riverfront district? Tourists are going to laugh when they see this. This is absolute insanity.

Isn’t that a public safety issue having a gigantic movie screen-sized video display that close to a roadway? That road is already a little stressful to drive on imho.

This is pure d**k-waving by BG. Doing it simply to show that he can.

I hope the paintball community does it's best artwork on this monstrosity!

Shouldn't this approved billboard be constituted as filling the last of the 3 billboards?  This location is double sided. Technically he now has the ability to have up to five if the last location is also double sided.

In Ken's article Leonard says the the city's billboard restrictions prevented this from going up on 30 other sites, yet they approve four variances here?

Really stinks to see this get no pushback from anyone.

Renovated Odeon in Flats to reopen this year
By Ken Prendergast / April 16, 2024

With a new owner, a new venue manager and some freshening up planned in the coming months, The Odeon Concert Club, 1295 Old River Rd. on the East Bank of Cleveland’s Flats, is due to begin hosting new live performances again, perhaps before the end of this summer.

Absolutely! And I gotta say I'm positively shocked the former owner guy wearing a tracksuit couldn't get the place back to the glory years ;-)

A look at the new Oswald signage, seeing red up there looks a little weird to me but I think I’m just used to seeing EY up there for so long

IMG_3488.jpeg

The "Oswald" signage feels overscaled for the building. Also, is it really necessary for 3 signs? Even SHW only has 2

speaking of....the new EY sign on their new building looks comically small to me. Like they just shoved it in the corner and called it a day. Looks so out of place. I would get a pic but I only see it when I'm driving down 90 on the way home.

Not very “Progressive” signage, is what you’re saying…..

The East & West signage don't line up with each other correctly.

Samsel Supply to close its doors after 66 years
By Ken Prendergast / September 5, 2024

When they sold their properties on Old River Road in Cleveland’s Flats East Bank to a developer nearly three years ago, Samsel family members had declined to answer where they would relocate their commercial supply business, Samsel Supply Company. No one else in local real estate circles seemed to know either. Turns out the reason was a simple one that few had considered — they’re not relocating. They’re closing.

So they're closing rather soon it sounds like. Wonder if that means a potential redevelopment is more imminent than expected. I noticed in the article Ken mentioned it was "a still-active but not yet publicized redevelopment". Would be great for some ground floor retail and some loft apartments.

  • Author

Yes, I would call it "imminent" -- but that's a relative term. 😁

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Well that's the end of one era but hopefully the beginning of another. Right now the Flats seem to be some combination of slowly moving forward along with a holding pattern. If the structures on both sides of Old River are developed correctly the Flats gets a huge shot in the arm. If not, what a wasted opportunity.

Worst case scenario is those great old buildings are torn down. I'm already a little nervous that one main partner is a suburban developer. Do they even care about saving old buildings?

I feel that the ground floor of the "original section" of the FEB needs to have a different feel from the modern version. The modern version is very party/nightlife focused, I would want this version to be more well rounded that invites people to come down there before 8PM.
