The trouble spot, known as "Scriptz", is outta here. Good riddance.

A hookah lounge has taken its place. Hookah lounges are considerably more laid back than drama-queen places like Scriptz.

I wonder if this means that Lucic is focusing on getting Tomo Japanese open, since the city wanted Scriptz gone. Who knows.

These are REALLY coming along!! I know I’ve said it before, but I just can’t get over how amazing the design, scale/density, boardwalk frontage, windows, multi-level outdoor spaces, etc. all are. Espe

What was Scriptz?  Also, I wonder how hookah places make money.  There are several here in LA and I never see people in them, so I'm not sure why they keep popping up.  Maybe I just see them at the wrong times.

A few views from yesterday......

Nice job catching a Waterfront line train!

Scriptz was a night club. The hookah bars I've seen are all crowded after 10pm until the early hours of the morning. Similar to night clubs.

I dont like going off-topic but Scriptz was a shoot-'em up bar and nightclub.

It's not the kind of place you want a stone's throw from a newly built ALoft Hotel and other upcoming restaurants/venues/offices (aka FEB).

Some of what went on...

http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2009/11/2_people_were_shot_in_the_flat.html

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Two Cleveland men were shot about 3:40 this morning outside Scripts Night Club, in the 1200 block of Old River Road in the Flats

http://www.callandpost.com/index.php/news/metro/1890-another-violent-weekend-

At 1:35 a.m., police went to University Hospitals for another man who was shot at 1204 Old River Road. Reports say Nathaniel Primous was waiting outside with a group of friends for a ride home from his girlfriend's. While waiting outside Script Night Club, he heard several gunshots and started running. That's when he fell to the ground after being shot in the foot. No other information is available with this shooting at this time.

Actually, 1204 Old River Road hs a legacy of violence going on several years now.

...Anyone remember Klub Kaos?

http://www.wkyc.com/news/article/46916/0/Teen-killed-in-the-Flats

But it all came to an end when a near riot turned deadly in the Flats. It started at Club Kaos when a juvenile rap concert spilled out into the streets where 200, maybe 300 kids started fighting. When police tried to get the crowd under control, they found 16-year-old Anthony Gordon near West 10th and Main. He had been shot many times

I don't consider it off-topic, as long as it discussed in the context of the overall redevelopment of Flats East Bank -- and why it's needed. I think crime as an element of blight, used as justification for redevelopment, is right on topic.

FYI, a source for my former organized crime website was pretty tight with the owner of Club Kaos. So I'm not surprised it became a pox on the FEB.

Flats East Bank project draws chef Chris DiLisi for new eatery

http://www.cleveland.com/dining/index.ssf/2012/09/flats_east_bank_project_draws.html#incart_river_default

Chef Chris DiLisi is attached to the new $500 million Flats East Bank development project under way in Cleveland.

He and his wife, Krista DiLisi, formerly of Flour restaurant in Moreland Hills, will open Willeyville -- a 3,000-square-foot, roughly 100-seat restaurant with both indoor and outdoor dining -- at Front and West 10th streets.

Not sure about that proposed restaurant name...

nor when its publicized as an eatery, an incredibly dated 1970s term. why not fundrinkery?!

I hope people will know it's pronounced "wiley," like his namesake avenue in Duck Island...

LOL!

WTF is a "crash" beer?

HATE the name. Willeyville sounds like it should be next to a Hooters, but for gay men.

When I first heard the name, I thought...oh ok, so Willy Nelson and Toby Keith have places...but someone mispronouced the name to me.

If it wasn't for that ramped roof, you'd never see that building from the Shoreway. It's kind of odd to see from the bridge, like the building is trying to peek over to look at the traffic. I feel like it's watching me.......

Or, maybe that ramped roof has a place in a Hollywood movie someday. Like a foot chase where the crook being chased jumps from the hotel onto the Shoreway, just in time to get crushed by a bus (yes, I know the buses aren't allowed on the bridge anymore. But hey, its Hollywood!).

I say demolish the bridge and open up all that space downtown and the west bank of the flats ;)

I just noticed something.... I wonder if some bad-ass snowdrifting onto the Shoreway will result from that roof design and a strong northerly wind? Let's see if that happens!

I agree 100% replace it with a swing bridge to connect the West and east banks of the Flats together.

Can anyone who is totally familiar with the FEB project tell me which restaurants are part of Phase 1 and which is Phase 2. Now has Phase 2 locked up financing and will it start immediately after phase 1 is completed?

I would hope those windows are fairly sound proof.  I'd hate to be sleeping in a room near the Shoreway and hear the roar of traffic all night.

There's not actually much traffic outside of rush hour.

Simplythis, the way I understand it, Toby Keith's place is part of phase II, but construction will begin as soon as the tower is completed.  The rest of Phase II, like the apartment buildings, is still TBD.

Looking at the roof made me think they might put a rooftop bar up there, which would be really cool.

Best idea yet.

Yeah, if I go downtown late at night I take my car, which means I use the Shoreway...I'll be the only car on the viaduct after 10.

Idk if you guys have stayed at many Alofts but they have a branded bar concept called XYZ that usually goes on the top floor. One huge Aloft being built in DT OKC has 3 bars and 2 coffee shops, so their brand has a ton of flexibility with where they locate amenities. Ill be shocked it it ain't a bar.

I really think the roof swoop that goes above the Shoreway is simply a concealment for building systems, sadly...

Not all do.  Many Alofts like the one near me, do not have roof top bars, but they always have the XYZ lounge.

Cool photo.  Imagine how much better it would look without the elevated roadway.

I wonder if they will do the XYZ Lounge...since we already have one in Gordon Square minus the lounge...I can see that getting a little confusing.

It's a brand standard for aloft properties.  However, they may choose not to have one in Cleveland and just have the re:mix (lobby) lounge.

I wish that would be the case; that Phase II would start at or around the time the Tower is complete.... Phase II are 2 scary words when it comes to Cleveland development.

I doubt they want to be the second coolest XYZ in Cleveland.

I actually thought it was called "w xyz" because aloft is a w branded hotel.

This is getting way off topic.

You're right the bar brand is officially "W XYZ", but alofts are not a W brand.  They are a "vision" of W Hotel.  Their tag like is "style at a steal" and it's a brand for people who want to stay at a W, but not pay the W Premium.

Yep, so let's not make it worse. Move on, folks.

I got a tour of the new tower yesterday. Pics are in the City photos section.

Not sure if this has been posted yet. I'm on the flatseast.com site fairly often and I've never noticed this before... But it shows a pretty detailed view of Phase I and Phase II with names of each of the restaurants that have signed on so far. It looks like only Lago, Ken Stewarts and Willeyville are a part of Phase I.

http://www.flatseast.com/documents/FlatsLeasingPlan.pdf

After further research, it looks like a similar plan was posted a few months ago, but quite a few changes have been made to the original plan which can be found here:

http://www.flatseast.com/documents/retail-leasing-plan.pdf

Still too many mall-style outlots, and too much separation of the waterfront from the development.

This plan is 2/5 as urban as The Banks, perhaps 3/5 as urban as Lakewood.  Not sufficient.

^ I agree, after being in Milwaukee recently and seeing some very well done sections along the river (residential and commercial) built up to the waterfront and high density.  I wish this plan had more that looked more like that.  This (phase 2) looks too much like an adult playground, over planned big mall development.

There's still time!

It would be nice if building 5 brought in actual retail and not restaurants. New build construction, all at once, might be able to attract retailers that have ignored downtown otherwise.

I do like seeing the building will be 7 floors as well.

I think the placement of that parking garage is shortsighted.  What happens if the mouth of the river opens up in 15 years? you wouldn't want old river road to extend out there?

Thanks!

This place seems to have closed. Maybe for good, maybe for improvements. The sign is down and the parking lot across the street is blocked off.

I'd love to see the buildings built right up to the water's edge.  But I think the last time this came up, it was determined that doing so would incur some significant expenses that would throw the project's construction costs out of whack with what the market can bear.

Thanks!

I retract the above. I went by there earlier this evening and the sign's back on. There's still a fence around the parking lot, but now the gate's open. Maybe they were doing some improvements this week.
