June 30, 20231 yr This caught my attention: ”’We intend to save as many (buildings) as we can, and then rebuild the fabric of this neighborhood around them," Wathen said in an email. Max Hartings, a development associate with Equity, said the developer hopes to give the South of Main neighborhood a "downtown" with this project. Equity got involved with the site in 2020 and was not involved in the earlier project. They plan to start work on the building in early 2024.“ https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2023/06/29/historic-tax-credits.html I wonder how much property Equity owns around this site? I’m really excited to see this get rehabbed and hopefully more of Main St get rebuilt.

I’m pretty sure I saw an old picture of east main from way back and it was a nice area with numerous mixed use buildings. Hopefully someone can bring it back.
July 18, 20231 yr Funds approved for Fran Ryan Center construction City Council on Monday agreed to spend $23.6 million to begin construction of the Fran Ryan Center for seniors and a park on the site of a former Columbus City Schools building in the Olde Towne East neighborhood. The center is being named for former Columbus Councilmember Fran Ryan, a champion for the city's seniors and a City of Columbus Hall of Fame member. The Douglass Alternative Elementary School, 51 S. Douglass St. was built in 1974 and was closed in 2013. The city bought the building and nearly four-acre site in 2020. Demolition of the former school and design work was begun after council approved a $1.767 million contract with Moody Nolan in October 2021. The new two-story, 44,000-square-foot center will have a fitness center for wellness activities, a kitchen and space for a variety of activities and classes. It will also house many of the popular programs from the Martin Janis Community Senior Center and the Golden Hobby Gift Shop, according to a city website. "We expect it to open in the fall of next year, or more likely early in 2025," said Steve Reese, director of the city Recreation and Parks Department, which will operate the center.“ https://www.dispatch.com/story/news/local/2023/07/18/columbus-council-approves-new-20-hourly-living-wage-for-contract-workers-and-23-6m-for-fran-center/70416372007/
July 21, 20231 yr The Taylor Ave apartment building has gone vertical. Also noticed fencing around the perimeter of the building at the corner of Taylor and Mount Vernon. Anyone know of any plans here? I’d love to see a rehab.
July 21, 20231 yr ^ I hope that's a rehab but I'll bet the fencing is up to protect the public due to stuff falling off the building. Demo is probably imminent...😪

July 26, 20231 yr Four-Story Building Proposed for Key Site in Woodland Park The development would be built on what now basically serves as the front yard of the Mansion Day School, a private school that has occupied the historic mansion at 72 Woodland Ave. for years. Under the proposed plan, which was presented to the planning committee of the Near East Area Commission last week, the school would remain in the historic building while the greenspace in front – as well as a wooded lot to the north – would be developed to hold the new apartments and a rear surface parking lot. The proposal comes from Riewald Development, a Columbus-based firm that earlier this year presented a plan for a seven-story building on Spring Street to the Downtown Commission. Plans for the development show a 125-unit building, featuring mostly one-bedroom apartments, with a pool deck on the Woodland Avenue side and a parking lot behind. Cars would access the parking lot and the school via a curb cut on East Long Street. Several members of the planning committee voiced concerns about the impact of the proposed development on the neighborhood, particularly the way it relates to the school, according to Josh Lapp, a commissioner who attended the meeting. Riewald stressed that the school “is on a separate parcel and will continue to operate out of their existing facilities as they have done for several decades.”

Mount Vernon used to have such an active retail presence before my time, so it’d be great to see it come back to life. I wonder if the 23 DUs is a typo? Or if it’s 23 per building? Because that number seems low for such a large area, even if they do plan to keep the two houses that are already there.
August 1, 20231 yr An historic Columbus building is getting a major renovation meant to improve city services “The city's historic health department building in Olde Town East is getting a $21.5 million overhaul. Hopefully that is buried and won’t be happening ever.

September 12, 20231 yr New Near East Side apartment complex from Otto Beatty III and Kelley Cos. revives historic building A long blighted historic building in the Near East Side is ready to welcome people back inside its doors. Local developers Kelley Cos. and Otto Beatty III redeveloped the former Ohio Baptist General Convention's headquarters at 48 Parkwood Ave., adding nine apartments inside the building and 27 apartments in a new building next door. The Ohio Baptist General Convention contributed its land as equity in the project and will remain a minority owner. The newly built building is nearly fully leased. The original building will open for leasing later this year. The original building is on the National Register of Historic Places. It had sat vacant since 1996, so when the developers took over in 2021, there was a lot of damage to repair in the old building.
