yah Vandalia....no too shabby... :-D

While Dayton's score still looks pretty bad, DPS superintendent Percy Mack should be commended for the outstanding progress that has been made under his leadership.  Dayton Politics has an entry about the progress that DPS has made here (although I think daytonpolitics.com is really trying to make something out of nothing with a headline of "Is the Dayton Daily News racist or just anti-Dayton?")

My alma mater comes in at #3, must have gone down from #1 after my big brain and I left!

No. 1 Oakwood 108.6

No. 2 Mason 108.5

No. 10 Anna 103.8

This is the top 10.

Of all these, except one, they are all rural communities (Botkins!) or affluent suburban areas (mostly on the fringe of the urbanized area , except for Oakwood).

Vandalia is the only one thats not like this..thats more of a middle class area. And I have no idea where the "Kings" school district is.

The interesting thing here is that the school districts that used to have good reputations ...Northmont and Yellow Springs, rank lower on the list.

Kings is Kings Mill/Mason/Deerfield area schools.

Also, none of this is a surprise (though I agree with dfly on Percy Mack's commitment).

botkins is enormous compared to Russia (pronounced rue-she) that place is TINY...but hey..at least they have good schools

When I first saw how low my home school district, Mad River Local, was on the list I felt ashamed, but then I remembered how we kicked C-J's ass on the football field my Senior year so now I feel much more gooder.

Go Indians!

I wonder how this list compares to a "Percentage of Non-African-Americans" or an "Average Household Income" list.  I suspect it would look about the same with Trotwood-Madison and Dayton keeping it real at the bottom of the lists.

I wonder what accounts for these rural districts having such high scores.

Since my mom was a teacher at one of these type of districts (Marion Local), I'm inclined to say the teachers  ;-)

Really, I think it has to to do with the size of the size of the district and the size of the classes.  I'd be willing to bet that at these smaller districts, the superintendent is more in touch and has a better relationship with the students than a building principal would have with the students in a larger district.  These smaller class sizes also allow for stronger relationships between classmates, teachers, administrators, and parents.  Also, I'd guess that there are less economically disadvantaged students, less special needs students, and less unruliness.  But most importantly,  I think it comes down to parents and strong families.  Growing up there always seemed to be an emphasis by parents on strong work ethics, being successful, and not causing problems in schools--which everyone seems to give credit to the German settlers of the area for this.

For example, looking at southern Mercer and Auglaize counties schools--all farming areas with strong German heritage--all are rated as excellent...and all of these schools are very similar to northern Shelby County schools, such as Anna, Botkins, Fort Loramie, and Russia.

District Name	County Rating
Celina Mercer Effective
Coldwater	Mercer Excellent
Fort Recovery	Mercer Excellent
Marion Local	Mercer Excellent
Parkway Mercer Effective
St Henry	Mercer Excellent
Minster Auglaize	Excellent
New Bremen	Auglaize	Excellent
New Knoxville	Auglaize	Excellent
St Marys	Auglaize	Excellent
Wapakoneta	Auglaize	Effective
Wnsfld-Goshen	Auglaize	Effective

1 out of 4 years isn't bad.  I mean, coming from Mad River Local school district, that's pretty high standards.

^When it comes to Stebbins Football, you take what you can get.  I don't think the Indians have fielded a decent team since 1995.
