March 20, 201213 yr So at this rate, the savings generated will pay off the purchase of the carts in 4-5 years.
March 20, 201213 yr Seems to be a poorly written article, as they talk about savings but they don't really talk about where the savings come from. I would assume the transportation costs include the cost of dumping? Does the savings include the cost of the new trucks and/employees to handle the recycled materials? Does the city get paid for the recycled materials? If the carts are paid off in 4-5 years, it will probably be time to buy new ones.

Savings came from decreased landfill/disposal costs for garbage, and profit made on recycled materials. Also, remember that with the bigger carts, recycling frequency was reduced from weekly to biweekly, saving fuel and labor costs. I don't know if the cost of the new trucks is accounted for here.
April 10, 201213 yr Delusions of grandeur http://coast-usa.blogspot.com/2012/04/love-us-or-hate-us-coast-serves.html COA T explains just how important they are (and acknowledges a few detractors)

April 24, 201213 yr Quite hilarious... the tea party cries out, "no one is listening to us! The left-wing Cincinnati Enquirer didn't put us on the front page!" The Enquirer responds with a photo of the front page, with the tea party story at the top of page 1.
April 27, 201213 yr Is it really a scandal if only a handful of nuts say it is? "Conflict of interest? SORTA Board member Jim Tarbell buys two properties right next to Streetcar stop. Hmmmm." July 9, 201212 yr Things COAST/Chris Smitherman/700wlw Considers a 'Boondoggle': The Banks Project Fountain Square Redevelopment City's Recycling Program http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/coast?before=1318520990 In August 2009, anti-city group COAST claimed the city’s expanded recycling program would be a boondoggle and said Cincinnati had the “stupidest city council ever”: A majority of the nine fine fools voted to spend $3.5 million to lease high-tech recycling carts with radio transmitters. We are not kidding. We could not make this stuff up if we tried. The “radio transmitters” they are referring to are actually RFID chips that are used for the RecycleBank rewards program. Now that RecycleBank has been up and running for a year, what are the results so far? “We had a great first year,” said Larry Falkin, director of the Office of Environmental Quality. “We were able to grow participation in the recycling program by nearly 75 percent, increase the amount of recyclables collected curbside by nearly 50 percent, and save the City nearly $1 million through decreased landfill disposal costs and increased revenues from the sale of recyclables.” Things NOT considered a Boondoggle by COAST/Chris Smitherman/700wlw:
July 9, 201212 yr If it were just defense spending I could understand, but specifically calling out the F35 trillion dollar boondoggle is comical.

July 26, 201212 yr I don't think the other members of COAST pay attention to Mark Miller's online activities. The guy really is pathetic, lonely and sad. The other day he made a blog post about some political activist being jailed for a tweet halfway round the world, said it could've been him (written in the third person) and then went on Twitter thanking "COAST," which is actually him, for writing it. I was working on my website till 4:30 AM last night and by the time I woke up at 7:30 I had multiple comments of his to delete. His latest thing is making fun of homosexuals.
July 26, 201212 yr ^Are you absolutely sure that it is him? It's possible someone is just using the COAST or Mark Miller name to give a bad name for them. Someone did that on UrbanCincy a few months ago. Most likely though: :drunk:  :whip:
July 26, 201212 yr ^That coud be the case, but I've been dealing with Miller all week and his comments conveniently appear right after he posts something on Twitter. This morning's happened right around the time that a fresh COAST blog post went up.
July 26, 201212 yr Do comments on your site display an ip address or anything that you can track? If it consistently comes from the same address and you get a "genuine" comment from him from the same address then you would know it's really him. Also, how likely do you think it is that he reads these threads? I bet he does.
July 26, 201212 yr ^Unfortunately no IP adresses like a forum, just the usual names he uses on his blog. I bet he's already read this. Remember how he used to show up from time to time on here just to drop insults?

August 8, 201212 yr Apparently Chris Finney is making quite a scene today at some hearing. Anyone know whats going on with the Jehovah's Witnesses case he's representing? Sherry Coolidge @Moxiegirl10 Coast's Chris Finney representing Jehovah's Witnesses: promises economic development will pop up around assembly hall. Sherry Coolidge @Moxiegirl10 Testimony: Jehovah's Witness paid for economic study shows Assembly Hall would have almost $31.6 million total annual economic impact. What hypocrites in every sense of the word. I don't think there's any member of that organization capable of even telling the truth about anything
August 8, 201212 yr ^ You have to remember that Finney is first and foremost a lawyer; of course he'll sell out his beliefs to win a case, it's expected of him. Lawyers get paid to be professional hypocrites. I've also seen some people around town that work at the Finney firm, and I don't think all the partners there nor the other lawyers and paralegals share his same hatred for the city. I'm pretty sure there's at least one or two that live in OTR.

He is doing what he is required by law to do - which is to zealously represent his client. Calling him a hypocrite in this circumstance is really no different than calling a cop who gives you a speeding ticket a "pig".... the only purpose it serves is to make you feel a little better inside

If one is going to attempt to be a political activist as a lawyer, then they need to be selective with their clients (it’s not like he’s a public defender). I’m not going to let someone as active in politics as he is leave his work at his desk when he comes home, lawyer or not. You seemed to take that pretty personally, are you a lawyer or something?
August 8, 201212 yr Yes, I am a lawyer or something. No, I didn't take it personally. Here's to hoping you never need the services of a hypocrite. FWIW, I don't know what Finney is all about, but the point was that a lawyer's personal views or arguments he/she might have made in previous cases involving other clients, should absolutely not be used to the prejudice of his/her current client(s). That is a tactic COAST would use and you are never going to win a fight with an organization like that by stooping to their level.

I take it you're not from Cincy, so you're not aware that he constantly puts himself in the limelight as a political activist. Because he does, the public absolutely reserves the right to judge him based on who he represents and how he does it. No one gets a free pass for their professional actions, and in this case someones professional actions are directly opposite their personal beliefs; that is the definition of hypocritical. a lawyer's personal views or arguments he/she might have made in previous cases involving other clients, should absolutely not be used to the prejudice of his/her current client(s) You've got it backwards, I'm talking about him, not his clients.
August 9, 201212 yr oh man, was just watching Finney's presentation to Hamilton County for the Jehovah's Witness center. He is promising all sorts of fantastic financial windfalls but it's all based on results in similar cities & words like probably, expected, hopefully & predicted come up over & over again. hmmmmm.........
August 9, 201212 yr Is he making it sound like there's going to be windfall (ie, lots of new businesses popping up around the Assembly Hall)? Just curious.
August 9, 201212 yr As a JW myself, I am super, super split on this... I attend the Corapolis Assembly hall outside of Pittsburgh and went to the Willoughby Assembly Hall as a child. I can definately attest that after programs restaurants are packed in those areas, and hotels are busier (because in our area, most people do in fact commute) but not booked. It. seems that this assembly hall will pull from a larger area, maybe that will fill more rooms...We build (IMHO) beautiful buildings that complement the surroundings. However, I can completely see the city's side on this. Because its a religious organization, they wont get taxes on it. Because its not in fact used during the week it won't get a ton of flow toward the local businesses (what's that area of Hamilton County like, anyway?) So I can see why they want to hold out for something that fits the zoning law for that area....
August 9, 201212 yr I am familiar with this area since I have had several old relatives stay at the nursing home that is part of this development. It appears that the city built these industrial roads to attract tax paying businesses. There is still at least 25 acres available and it's a disaster for the city to have prime space taken by a property owner who will not pay taxes to recoup the cost of these improvements.
August 9, 201212 yr I find it interesting he is convinced a transportation project through the urban core has 0 economic impact but putting a religious facility in an industrial park will be perfect.
August 9, 201212 yr I find it interesting he is convinced a transportation project through the urban core has 0 economic impact but putting a religious facility in an industrial park will be perfect. That's exactly what I was trying to say earlier. This is much more eloquent
August 10, 201212 yr ^That's what I was getting at. As far as the JW's & the industrial park - they should have zoned out non-profits & churches from the outset. At this point I don't think they have a case. Would love to HamCo Neocons get hit with a religious discrimination suit, tho.....
August 10, 201212 yr Here's something I wrote on the COAST circus in Blue Ash last night: http://www.urbancincy.com/2012/08/blue-ash-city-council-spurns-coast-during-airport-vote/

August 26, 201212 yr Has Finney followed the lead of the great master Chabot & taken to living in his office, which, I'm still thinking isn't in Cincinnati....
August 27, 201212 yr Finney's seething hatred for the City of Cincinnati, Mayor Mallory and the streetcar is palpable in that video. Thanks for posting it. Also, as Jake posted in another thread, it appears that COAST is not going to circulate a petition in Blue Ash after all: http://cincinnati.com/blogs/northeastnotes/2012/08/15/blue-ash-airport-park-proceeds-referendum-threat-fades/
