Not sure if this has been posted before, but what the heck. I came across gmap-pedometer.com which lets you plot a route and then save it so others can see/share.

Personally, I'm a walker. I don't enjoy jogging for many reasons - uneven pavement, potential damage to knees, etc. Cycling is out of the question due to inner-ear/sinus balance issues. Mostly I like a brisk pace but slow enough that I can enjoy the surroundings, and my neighborhood is perfect for it. Lots of old school mansions and apartment buildings and a nice amount of people out and about. For example, I went for a walk tonight and I plotted my favorite way (though I vary it every so often).

All you have to do is press "record", and double-click for each "point" you want to make and it will draw the line for you. The numbers that pop up along the route are your mileage. Then, hit "save route" and it will give you a URL and that's your route! :-)

awesome site!

What's cool is tracing my steps for typical daily activities - going to the bus stop is a quarter-mile. If I'm doing errands at lunch (or going from East 9th to Waterstreet Grille like I did today), I end up walking anywhere from 1 to 1.5 miles. Maybe I can indulge (or imbimbe) a little more!  :drunk:

Two favorites for cycling....

Olentangy River Bike Path.... runs from downtown to about a mile north of I-270.  Very scenic and a few twists, turns and small hills to make it challenging.

Kokosing Gap Trail .... a rail trail that runs from Mount Vernon to the Northeast, through Gambier and on to Danville in Knox County.  Incredible in the Spring and Fall.... very gradual hills (the railroads knew how to engineer their rights of way), but you know you've had a workout if you do the whole trail.

Here's a cycling route that I've really enjoyed lately: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=374275 (warning: it's a little messy, as I take pretty much the same route out and back, so lots of overlapping trip leg numbers). This route gives you a great intro to Chinatown, jaunts through several of the East Side lakefront parks and a stark comparison between Bratenahl and Collinwood.

cool find mayday. this was fun to play around with.

my fav route is 4 miles. we walk so its not really a workout. it goes downtown in manhattan via the new riverfront hudson river park to battery park at the bottom of the island. then it goes up the east side of downtown via old stone street. it ends at the south street seaport where i get a giant styrofoam container of murphy's stout on draft and maybe some fried clams at jeremy's ale house  :drunk: :

usually we walk home too so that about doubles it.

cool site...

I used to run 2 to 3 loops around State College, PA's downtown every day up until about last August... but unfortunately I've been a shut-in since moving to Wooster... many people I know always preferred running in isolated places... but I like running "where the action is"... seeing all the people and buildings and urban activity takes my mind off the running... and in fact, is inspiring (especially when running past all the pretty college girls lol)

Here's the map... it would usually be 3-5 miles: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=383952

I've been telling myself that I'm going to start going to the YMCA before work to get back in shape... but every time that alarm clock goes off at 5AM, I sleep for another 2 hours... bah.

  • 8 months later...

Not sure if this really belongs here, but I didn't feel like it warranted a new thread (plus, this thread deserves a bump ).

Someone recently turned me on to www.bikejournal.com. It's a really cool site where you can keep track of everything from distance traveled to average speed to calories burned to descriptions of the rides. The most prominent use is to track distance traveled by bike over months and, for many users, years. You are ranked against all users in terms of bicycle distance traveled in 2007 (e.g. my piddley 59 miles in the last few weeks earned me a ranking of 4,591 of 5,445). And for those of you who take spinning classes, the data can be broken down so that you can see all riding or only your "real" road riding. Definitely worth checking out if you're even a novice cyclist.

Now, has anyone come up with new favorite recreational routes?  :-)
