Cool dog. You're in the Army? What do you do? I'm in the beginning stages of enlisting in the USAF. I just met wtih an Air Force Recruiter and took the practice ASVAB test. It was so easy! I want some more excitement in my life.

^^ Beautiful dog! Both of you look pretty serious.

I enlisted in the USAF going on fifty years ago; some of the memories remain so vivid that it's somewhat jarring to think of those years in terms of how much time has passed. The experience was interesting and at the end of my four years active duty I was glad I had done it and and eager to be done with it. People's experience depends on a lot of variables, including luck, timing, and individual personality. Getting through basic training mostly involved putting individuality aside while maintaining focus and personal integrity. Some people didn't make it because they couldn't take orders and/or freaked out at being yelled at, and some lacked personal integrity from the start.

My recruiter was honest with me; I took the tests and signed the papers and got on the bus without any promises. I met some guys whose recruiters guaranteed them a particular tech school or assignment just to get them signed up, when the recruiters had no authority to make those promises. When they found out the guarantees were worthless, and ended up doing something other than what they expected (i.e., promised electronics and ending up as a cook), most were pissed about it. I don't know if the procedures are different now, but unless it's a legal contract on an official AF form, it's worthless. Verbal promises mean nothing.

Graduated Honor Graduate, United States Army Infantry OSUT Ft. Benning Ga.  Sent to 2nd Battalion 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division "Rock of the Marne".  I was selected after Expert Infantry Badge training to be my Command Sergeant Major's Personal Security Detail for our upcoming tour to Afghanistan... however I just beat out my competition during a grueling two week try-out to go to Army Sniper school back at Ft. Benning Ga "Home of the Infantry" where I will be turned from an Expert Marksman that I am now to a lethal killing machine able to infiltrate, stalk and kill in any weather, any time, any where.  I have respect for all my brothers and sisters in arms past, present and future... however as our Drill Sgts made it clear to us... "If you ain't Infantry, you ain't sh!t".  All in good fun though of course.  Best of luck in deciding upon a future, if you want to chat feel free to message me, I can give you my cell and would be happy to answer any questions you might have about military life, as limited as my experience has been.

p.s. be ready to make major lifestyle changes... you won't be doing 6 week field problems in the swamp like I do since only about 7% of the Army is actually combat oriented and that number shrinks to nearly 1% of the Air Force (Air Force PJs are BAD ASS though, make no mistake).  What I mean is, look at my signature... Ferrari before 25 do or die... well my friend I am almost 24 now and I drive a 1992 Ford Bronco.  If you don't LOVE Uncle Sam, it ain't for you.  Nuff said.

What color is your '92 Bronco?

Hell yeah, a few mods, no emissions in the state of Georgia so I took some liberties here and there.  Train horn too.  It is an XLT not a Bauer so its a true bad ass.

Oh boy, a train horn. They'll get out of your way for sure.

Looks like a fun truck.

Me with my belated Christmas present. I haven't seriously indulged myself in a few years, and I deserve it.

I've been without a truck since 2006, and there are times when that has seriously impaired my productivity on some projects. I remedied that situation yesterday.

Great color ;)

Not so bad, actually; it has the 4.3L V6 and it's rated 17/21, and I'm a conservative driver and usually can beat those highway mileage estimates by a little bit. Besides, I'm keeping my Focus station wagon (30mpg overall and 34mpg highway) as my primary driver. It's just difficult or impossible to bring home sheets of drywall or plywood or haul a 200-pound engine part with the Focus, and pulling a 4,500-pound tractor on a trailer is just out of the question, even for a few miles. I need to do all these things from time to time, and I can't always count on finding someone to do them for me.

Actually, it's used. It's a 2001 model with 88,000 miles, built at the GM plant in Fort Wayne. The dealer provides a Carfax button for each vehicle on his web site, so I checked it and it doesn't show any evidence of damage or of going to an auction or rebuilder. It's had three owners, all in the Columbus, Ohio area, but I don't think it's ever been driven in winter; it's not Ziebarted, and there's no evidence of corrosion on the frame or in the fender wells.

Exterior and interior are pristine except for a small dent at the bottom of the tailgate and some scuffing on the driver's arm rest, and at first I suspected a repaint but I can't find any evidence of that. At that mileage, I expect some minor issues that will need attention, but for the overall value I can afford to take care of them as they arise.

I've been looking for this truck for almost a year; I wanted a Chevy, GMC, or Ford half-ton, regular cab, 8-foot bed, towing package, auto, air, minimum gadgets (basic am/fm radio, maybe a cd) and no power windows or locks (those are maintenance liabilities on work trucks). At the bottom of the priorities list was, "It would be nice if it was red." I haven't even  come close; all the ones I saw with specs like those were beaten-down shop trucks or stanky farm trucks. The used-truck market is saturated with 4X4s, big V8s, crew cabs, fiberglas add-ons, high-tech audio, etc. and all that stuff makes them harder to handle, harder on gas, and more expensive. I saw this one in Sunday morning's paper, and after lunch I drove up to look. As I was leaving, someone else pulled into the lot to look at it, and when I went back first thing Monday morning, as I was getting ready to take a test drive a couple more guys showed up who were interested in it. I knew if I tried to stall and lowball the price it would be sold while I was waiting, so I jumped on it and brought it home that day.

Nice truck, Rob! Hey Rob ol' buddy, ol' pal. Wanna help me move?!

Ha! You know THAT is coming...  :-D

Ha! That's why I bought a truck; in the six years since I traded in my last truck, my "friends" started dropping out of sight. I consider some of my friends on UO almost as family, and often with fewer issues. I need some more of the local flesh-and-blood kind, though.

In all the years that I owned trucks, I got so many new friends. I never minded pitching in for a few hours on a Saturday if they were prepared when I arrived, and especially if they returned the favor with food, or on occasion that other primal desire. Most, though, were utterly unprepared when I arrived, still shuffling around in a bathrobe or pajamas, nursing a cup of coffee, and asking me where they could get some boxes.

I soon learned to filter between the established friends and the "Oh-you-have-a-truck" friends. As soon as a quoted a five-dollar per hour rate for the latter group, with a dollar off for each additional helper they provided, the deadbeat slackers took offense and dropped it.

Wow very nice. That's my favorite body style for the Silvarado/Sierra. I cannot warm up to the new ones at all. And a 2001 with only 88,000 miles?? That's amazing. I got my 2001 Nissan Altima in 2005 and it had 83,000 then. Very good find. And gorgeous truck. Enjoy it!

You bought same same truck my dad just bought...only he got the club cab. He decided to indulge after the '89 Suburban finally died last year. 22 years he had that beast.

My what a big truck you have!

The better to give you a ride with, my dear!

Grrr.  Sounds hot!  >:D

I guess one good thing about having gone to high school in Pickaway County is that all my friends have trucks of their own, keeping me from having to be the Guy With the Truck.

I don't think you ever posted a pic of yourself, man.

I always pictured you with long hair and a black AC/DC t-shirt on.

Nah, I got burned out on AC/DC by age 15.

I just always pictured you as having that Metal-Head look.

There is a pic of me (or a link to one) lurking on this site somewhere. Hint: it's in a Columbus thread, not a photo one.

I haven't posted any pics on here, facebook or elsewhere in over a year I think. This is me today at Nationwide Children's hospital with Lizzy (little half brother's half sister - how are we related? Ha!)
