You and your excursions!  What am I going to do with you?!

Me thinks MTS has the record for most posts on this thread without a single photo of him/herself.

..and your photo is where??  My photo is here, ProkNo5 used it to stalk me.

Here's a hint. Look for lots of hats!

I've been cranking out MTS pillows and T-Shirts on Ebay for over a year.  They're a big hit in Thailand ;)

Don't forget all the ones I bought.  Especially the pillows.

Love it, but don't you hate it when you're trivialized as being a "cheerleader" for the city?

Meh... I've been called worse things. ;)

ACK!!!  That picture is creepy.  This thread is called "Show a Pic of Yourself" not "Show a Pic of your Mother."  I hope she put the ugly stick down before she fed you breakfast.

That's an awesome picture, Seth.  Have you ever been to the fox hunt in Indian Hill (might be called Camargo fox hunt or something)? I've always wanted to go, but never had the opportunity.

I've chased with them but never in IH itself.  I think they hunt more and more in KY b/c of sprawl.  Great people and plenty of preservationists there.

That picture reminds me.  I need new pair of riding boots and breeches.

Put one of the rug rats on ebay or craigslist and see what you can get?

You don't have to be rich to ride or hunt.  I'm wouldn't call myself rich but that term is relative so who knows.  As with everything, it comes down to priorities.  I only have basic tv and a basic cellphone (I want a jitterbug), own my cars outright, don't have student loan debt, don't take vacations, work for myself, etc.

I find balance in my life.  I travel but never just for "vacation."  The best vacation to me is free time at home.

Dolly Sods Wilderness, January 23, 2010

I managed to drive 1/2 up FS 75 to a pull-off, and we hiked the remainder 2 miles to the top at Bear Rocks. We hit the interior and crossed Red Creek, climbed up to an overlook, and did some exploration to the north and back along some plains along Red Creek. 2 feet of snow, crusted with ice, made for an interesting hike of around 6 miles for that day.

For today, we hiked to the North Mountain Trail and hiked over to Chimney Rocks. The photos below were taken 1/2 mile south.

Seems like a pretty rewarding hike.  Great photos!!

There's Sherman, keeping this thread straighter than the Greece thread. Though a few more posts from others may turn it back.

Those shots are cool! That rock you guys are sitting on must be at an extremely high altitude.

Sherman you ever go rock climbing?

Dolly Sods is at 3,734 feet, and Chimney Rocks is at 3,012 feet, and are only a few miles from each other, separated by a wide valley. So while it wasn't the highest, it was interesting to observe the difference in climate between both.

Dolly Sods is marked by bogs and highland plains, featuring vegetation that is unique to the U.S. -- many species are derived from Canada, and it is very windy in certain areas, such as by Bear Rocks. Dolly Sods features a weather system that is unique to the state, and a lot of weather systems often stop or degrade after crossing the top. While Canaan Valley (3,200 feet) to the west was 40F that day , it was about 30F at the top of Dolly Sods and 45F at Chimney Top, which is to the east of Dolly Sods.

And while it rained in Canaan Valley Sunday, it snowed and iced at Dolly Sods and sprinkled and iced at Chimney Top. Canaan Valley receives a LOT more snow than Chimney Top, despite being 20 miles from each other.

It was fun hiking through 2 feet of snow and ice at Dolly Sods, but it was even better walking through several inches at Chimney Rocks. And less painful.

No, I don't like rock climbing for the reason that I hate sheer heights. Climbing on that rock was enough for me!

Rock climbing is a good workout. You don't even have to climb that high if you don't want to.

  • 3 weeks later...

It definitely is.  I used to do indoor rock climbing and would come home extremely sore.  I wish I could get back into it.

To be honest, I think the most fun part of rock climbing is doing those walls close to the ground, in caves. I like climbing on the ceiling. If you fall, you only have 5-6 feet of a drop.
