Ohio State cracks top 20 among nation's public universities

University moves up two spots in U.S. News & World Report rankings

 

 

COLUMBUS - According to the U.S. News & World Report 2007 edition of America's Best Colleges released today, The Ohio State University has been named 19th among the nation's top 50 public universities, up from 21st in 2005, 22nd in 2004 and 2003, and 24th in 2002.

Congrats to Columbus and all of Ohio!! Great news! I love when OSU looks like more than a football factory. 

 

On the liberal arts college front, Oberlin and Kenyon continue to make Ohio proud as well.

Best experience? That's highly subjective, but I would think that it would be cool to go to such a large university with a great football program. Secondly, while OSU has some very reputable graduate programs, is the undergraduate experience very difficult? I always assumed that it would be a pretty lax academic environment (large state schools often are branded with such stereotypes).

 

Bang for your buck?  How much does Miami cost?

Miami is certainly noticably more expensive than OSU.  For social aspect combined with academics, I'd put OSU tops, sure.  I'm not saying it's the best for academics nor social (though it might be for the latter) but it definately blends the two together (then again, it better; it's a state school).

 

The undergraduate experience is difficult if you make it difficult.  There are thousands of courses (some are bound to be hard; some are bound to be a cakewalk).  If you challenge yourself in the undergrad dept., then yes, OSU can be very difficult.  Of course if you don't challenge yourself at all and just drink beer, play beer pong, and fart in class, then sure, you can do that as well at OSU.

Since we're on the topic of colleges a lot lately, can I just say something a little unrelated? Why would anyone go to Miami or Xavier? If you're from Cincinnati and go to Xavier, it's basically the 13th grade. If its a state school it's understandable beause it's cheap but the only way I would pay private college tuition is if it was a completely remarkable school, none of which are in Ohio. I guess you could say Case. I just don't see how it's worth it when Ohio's state schools stand out so much more (Cincinnati's DAAP, OSU's Engineering and Fisher college of Business, etc give our state schools a good reputation). I also don't get why Universities like Bowling Green exist. I don't get why some people like going somewhere that's like cornfield->soybeanfield->university->cornfield.

i know my friend visited bg, hated it, didnt want to go there, then found out how much money they were giving him and decided to go there.  so i think those kind sof schools tend to give more scholarship money than other schools.  i remember uc offered me quite a bit of aid and osu offered less.  i ended up choosing osu to get away from home and the better programs but the point is i think the 'worse' schools obviously tend to give more money to kids and that keeps them alive.  xavier.....dont they have a killer business program?  i dunno....id never go to x.  go cats and bucks. 

I think i'm going to transfer to OSU's engineering school next year if possible.

 

P.S. I'd never go to X either. Norwood BLOWS and I hate everyone that I know at X. Their business school is suppose to be good but it's probably not as good as Fisher; yet guess what! Costs more than double.

well osu is a great place and i recommend transferring here but imo, the city of cincy is better than cbus.  if i could put osu in cincy, i would be happy.  just my opinion though.

I think that you are over-simplifying this discussion. C'mon, there are many valid reasons to go to other universities or colleges.

well obviously many of us urban ohioans wouldnt want to go to miami, but miami is the best school is southwest ohio and before the flat rate decision, it was well priced, so I can totally understand why people would want to go there.  today, with the flat rate, i think it is something like 21,000 for everyone and thats pretty redic. so osu is deff. more bang for your buck than miami anyways. 

^Its only a short, free bus ride away from downtown Hamilton, so you can get you dose of urbanism as much as you like. ;)

 

Why do you think the flat rate has made Miami more expensive? Ohio residents get a discount of at least something like 9-11,000. I think mine is 10,500. Miami has continually been rated as a Best Value by Forbes.

I also don't get why Universities like Bowling Green exist.By defintion, a college town will almost always feel "cut off." Athens actually has a far more secluded, cut-off feeling than Bowling Green. Unlike Athens or Oxford, Bowling Green at least has a decent-sized permanent population. AND, it has the Brathaus...

You need to visit the western half of US to see how cut off some universities can be.

 

One thing ive found out about America, particularly as you go west, is that most of it is BORING. I would hate to live out there and sure wouldn't want my college experience to be out there :[

But it always has been...the flat rate didn't do anything to change the cost of Miami to the average Ohio resident.  It's just a better model for giving needier students more financial aid.

That is the Miami attitude that I can't stand. They try everything to make it seem like they're such an exclusive, expensive old school. If the kids who buy into that image are really that smart and really that rich and really that elitist, why are they going to an in-state public university Ivy League knock-off? Go to the real thing.

^Because Miami has/creates a quality, elite reputation, thus its not seen as settling. And don't think Miami only has a reputation in Ohio as Chicago and New York also represent a large pool of students/alumni.
