*** i hope you enjoyed a trip to billyburg brooklyn ***

Those mansard roofs on those new apartments look awful, like the 70's apartments with the shingles covering the second floor.

Anyway, I enjoyed both your tours, its a neat area.

Ah,  Williamsburg.

Utter trash.

Though it does have a neat coffee shop on Driggs with fishbowls used for coffee mugs.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

Wow, I was in Williamsburg a couple weeks back and I couldn't believe the amount of new construction around McCarren Park!  Considering that the development along the waterfront hasn't even started yet and will put this McCarren stuff to shame within the next ten years, it's pretty scary to think of how over-burdened this 'hood will be with new residents without any planned infrastructure improvements (that I know of).  The system will be tested!

so wait, you were there attracted by the utter trash then?

btw you can get you some more of that style of coffee at any respectable french cafe that serves breakfast coffee.

well the mta keeps threatening to turn the L train into a robot train. is that an improvement? heh. oh wait, they do have the ferry service. gee that'll be so great for the wall streeters or ex-hipsters who go live on the water there, eh? (new construction on the park and water is $1000+/sqft).

As lovely as the area is, I couldn't possibly live there. I lack the unkempt hair and the faded/shredded/stained/ill-fitted clothes. If I could only bring myself to stop doing laundry, shaving and getting haircuts every 3 weeks.

And give me a break - either ya tranny out or you don't. It's one thing to have a man-bag, it's entirely ANOTHER to have a BEDAZZLED man-bag!!!  :-P

^ Too funny MayDay.

Loved the threads mrnyc!

mayday you are soooo chelsea!

What I don't understand is why hipsters have been mocked for so long but are somehow stronger than ever.  I don't even understand what it apparently means to be a hipster, what it is they're fighting for or rebelling against or what the damn deal is.  Watching obscure movies?  Listening to obscure bands?  Trying to look like you're in a band?

^Actually I followed some links, apparently there are something like 28 hi-rises on the drawing board in that immediate area.  Even if just 10 get built, that's still a big deal, still beyond anything happening in the Midwest.  It's hilarious how in the responses someone still managed to blame President Bush for this -- "in the Bush Economy it's cheaper to build vertical...".  Okay, so these people are as stupid as they look.

"mayday you are soooo chelsea!"

No, just hygenic ;-)

Trust me, about 15 years ago I looked even more absurd than Ms. Bedazzlebag. I mean seriously - if you're going glam, glam it up. The plaid shirt and the bag are just not cutting it!

Lately, I've had a lot of fun meeting a few hipsters who've sneered at me because I'm clean-cut. I love telling them "one day, you'll be just like me"

yeah, it's typical clueless to reality rich kid blather. par for the course in the burg.

all the construction around there is pretty wild tho. impossible housing costs are fueling this kind of rapid development on both the queens/brooklyn and new jersey waterfront sides of manhattan. south bronx too. for example, i have a new rehabbed mid-block building going up across the street from us on 14th st, it's shamelessly called 'the prime,' it's i think only 9 lofts and the sign says the apts 'start' at $3M. so no wonder most people have to look elsewhere to buy. crazyness.

lol! -- that last part is what i meant: maybe one day he'll get it together, clean it up & make his move to chelsea in the city where generally your peeps are much more clean cut than they are in grungy billyburg. we can only hope!

They enjoy being different. People mocking them probably just fuels the fire. Throughout history we've always had groups of people that rebelled against the conservative preppy norms. If it's gotten more popular its probably becasue of the commercialization of it with stores like Hot Topic. Unfortunately it gets to a point where you realize you're not really unique, you're still conforming to some subset of society. What I don't understand is this new phenomenon that began a year or two ago where all these guys are wearing women's jeans. It looks completely stupid--I mean...jeans are cut differently by gender for a reason.

^It all started with the resurfacing of the late 70s/early 80s punk/glam looks, some of the more mainstream acts like the White Stripes and Scissor Sisters wore the "skinny" jeans and the crowds followed. I personally think the reason they're so popular is that so many younger white guys have such flat arses. It's the one style that doesn't give them the "diaper butt" look. All they need to do is hit a stairstepper once in a while but I guess that going to a gym isn't in the hipster handbook.

Well then someome should definitely add a chapter to the hpster handbook about weightlifting with emphasis on squats and deadlifts. :] It's key to any workout routine anyway.

P.S. Isn't Wicker Park in Chicago suppose to be like Williamsburg? Hipster wise. I'd rather live in Brooklyn and commute than pay Manhattan prices :] Probably the same reason all of this development is going on in BK.

I remember proto-hipsters appearing around 1995, at roughly the time Weezer got big.  I knew a lot of people in art school dressing basically like how hipsters dress now around 1998, and yes, they were actually revealed to be totally rich (as the majority of people, or at least the jerks in art schools seem to be).  I remember in 1992 my high school history teacher staged a 1970's leisure suit contest for extra credit, and here we are 15 years later with people still going to thrift stores getting stupid Tshirts and dressing like their grandparents.

As this forum's southern correspondant, I can report that there is this bizarre Nashville Hipster look brewing, where college aged dudes who probably have little country credibility are patronizing the "real" honky-tonks in Nashville and combining the urban hipster look with a corny classic country look.  It's related to the rockabilly look, which in itself is ridiculous, but it's usually festooned with some actually expensive sunglasses and a particular temperment.  I saw one of these dudes walking down the street about a month ago with his shiny belt buckle and aviator glasses and faux swagger and almost yelled something at him, he looked like such a clown.

^^^

You cats are crazy. It's all about the babes, son! They're doing it cuz the girls they like like it. Don't overthink it!
