Errors force BGSU to redo work on Sebo athletic site

By JENNIFER FEEHAN

BOWLING GREEN - When some of the walls of Bowling Green State University's new Sebo Athletic Center began cracking weeks after the concrete block was placed, officials knew something was wrong.

The masonry subcontractor had failed to fill in the walls in some places with grout, had not put all the required reinforcement bars into place, and had not properly overlapped those bars in some areas.

Renters in B.G. in demand after building surge

Landlords offering incentives

BOWLING GREEN - Not too many years ago, Bowling Green State University students who hadn't lined up a place to live before school started were out of luck.  Not so this year.  While BGSU has seen some increases in enrollment in recent years, the city has experienced an explosion in apartment construction. Since 2000, 536 apartments with a total of 1,752 bedrooms have been built, according to records on file with the city planning department.

Among those, the 200-unit Copper Beech Townhomes opened last year at Dunbridge and Napoleon roads, and College Park Enclave at Klotz and Napoleon roads opened 120 units in 2001 and 144 more this summer. Each of the 264 apartments at the Enclave has four bedrooms.

Plan being put into place, needs financial backing

By: Chris Voloschuk

Issue date: 1/18/07 Section: Sports

What will the University's athletic facilities look like in 2027? It is a question that an increasing number of people are asking these days, and one that the University is looking to answer.

Currently, the buildings housing the University's four major sports are a mix of good, bad and especially old parts.

A BGSU press release:

Goal for Sebo Athletic Center reached

BOWLING GREEN, O. — Bowling Green State University's major fund-raising effort, “Building Dreams: The Centennial Campaign for BGSU” has reached $110 million and significant milestones with two of its priority projects.

BGSU Director of Athletics Greg Christopher recently announced the department has achieved its fund-raising goal of $7.7 million for the Sebo Athletic Center, one of the major capital projects for the Building Dreams Campaign.  The Sebo Athletic Center is the first building constructed exclusively for intercollegiate athletics since Doyt L. Perry Stadium was opened in 1966.

“Successful completion of fund raising for the Sebo Athletic Center is evidence of what the Bowling Green family can accomplish,” said Christopher.  “It's also a credit to the vision and support of many people—first and foremost, to Bob Sebo for his leadership and tremendous generosity, and here on campus, President Ribeau and (former Athletic Director) Paul Krebs pushed the facility forward.”

J. Robert “Bob” Sebo of Salem, Ohio, pledged $4.45 million over five years as his commitment to the Building Dreams Campaign.  In addition to his $3.5 million gift to the Sebo Athletic Center, he also supported several additional University initiatives, including expansion of the Sebo Entrepreneurship Lecture Series, a jazz studies scholarship, a spring musical concert in the College of Musical Arts and a WBGU-PBS documentary about successful regional entrepreneurs.

The Sebo Athletic Center will be completed this spring, and the official dedication will take place at the first home football game next season.

“I think this is a tremendous first step in providing the necessary resources to our athletic program in helping our student athletes learn about leadership, action and strategy,” said Sebo.  “Excellent athletic teams unite the student body so they can enjoy, love and support the University.  This creates enthusiasm and engages both our students and alumni who support the University.”

The privately funded center, located in the north end zone of Perry Stadium, will become the stadium's new front entrance.  At approximately 33,500 square feet, the new two-story building will feature an expanded and state-of-the-art sports medicine and rehabilitation facility and a strength and conditioning area for all University student athletes.

Football coaches' offices, a video equipment and viewing room, team meeting rooms and conference rooms will enhance currently available facilities.  A heritage room and an outdoor pavilion overlooking the playing field also are part of the project.

“To sustain excellence throughout the Department of Athletics, it is essential that we address several pressing facility needs,” said BGSU President Sidney A. Ribeau.  “We have outgrown our sports medicine/rehabilitation and strength/training facilities.  Our teaching, meeting and coaching space must be expanded and technologically upgraded.  The addition of the Sebo Athletic Center will meet both of these needs and all programs will benefit.”

In addition to reaching the $110 million mark in its $120 million overall campaign goal, the University also recently surpassed by $300,000 its $40 million goal for the campaign initiative targeted at sustaining the University.  These funds help ensure the future growth and success of BGSU, funding distinctive classroom, research and extracurricular programs; enhancing student life; and providing students opportunities.  The Building Dream Campaign runs through December 2008.

Findlay pair give $750,000 to BGSU for theater plans

BOWLING GREEN — A Findlay couple is giving $750,000 to Bowling Green State University that will provide for the main theater in the planned Wolfe Center for the Arts.  Thomas and Kathleen Donnell, who announced their gift yesterday, said they are particularly excited about the university’s collaborative plans to incorporate theater, film, music, and digital art into the center.

In addition to the theater, the arts center will have classrooms and production and studio spaces.  In February, 2005, Frederic and Mary Wolfe of Perrysburg donated $1.5 million for the arts building that will bear their name.

University halts progress on Dunbridge

By: Tim Sampson

Issue date: 6/27/07 Section: Campus

Following criticism from a number of campus and community groups, the University on Friday told the Board of Trustees it wouldn't proceed with the proposed Dunbridge learning community.

Many opposed the project due to environmental concerns and fears that its location, east of Interstate 75 on Dunbridge Road near the Copper Beach Townhomes, would fracture the campus community.

At Friday's meeting, Thomas Trimboli, University general counsel, recommended against going forward with any plans at this time after a feasibility study for the project had been conducted.

BGSU Unveils Design Of The Stroh Center

Bowling Green basketball and volleyball will have a new home in 2011-12.

Dec. 3, 2008

Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green State University revealed the design of its new, 5,000-seat arena, The Stroh Center.  Construction of the state-of-the-art center is slated to begin in Fall 2009 and be completed in late 2011.

The Stroh center will serve as the new home for Falcon basketball and volleyball and be used for graduation and other campus and public events.  Rossetti Associates Inc., a Southfield, Mich. Architectural firm and URS Group, Inc., a Cleveland engineering firm, are designing the center.

The $36 million dollar arena will be funded through a combination of private gift support and debt service.  To date, the University has raised $12.8 million of the $14 million private fund-raising goal.

I've been saying the same thing to my friends about the capacity! I read that this was going to be very similar to gonzagas "kennel" which is a nice venue for a private school that has an enrollement of about 4500. A little different than a state school with an enrollment of about 22,500. They need to bump up the capacity to about 8,000 if they are really interested in playing with the big boys.

Aww what a cute little arena for bowling green

The Wolfe Center ever being built = JOKE.

What do you know, BGSU epic fails again. Great! Good thing I left that school.

Wow, that arena looks great!  I've never been to a BB game at BGSU, but I hear the current arena is pretty small.  MAC schools are really throwing some cash at the athletic facilities right now.  Rumor has it that Akron will be building a new BB arena downtown in the future.  Lebron and Nike may be involved, but right now there are only renderings of the building, nothing official.

i encourage you to go see the zips at bg at memorial hall while you can. its a wonderful bb arena. being small and old school styled, its a very energetic place to see the game.

Eh!  Nothing beats the Glass Bowl or Savage Hall...GO ROCKETS!  :wink2:

at first i thought oh cool good eye c-dawg, everybody came to their senses about this hideous arena.

.....but then i read the article and my heart sunk:

"Many Stroh Center opponents take issue with the $60 per-semester fees that students would be charged beginning in 2011 when the arena is scheduled to be finished. The fees would last until the project's debt is paid off."

so it turns out they are just cheapskates! nobody has any issue at all with the new arena being a butt ugly tin shack.

your assumptions may or may not be correct, but the facts is all they said outright was they didn't want to pay the fee.

now i'd like for you to be right, because it would restore my good faith in the architectural taste of the bg students, but going on that article and the looks of the rest of the campus, i think thats hoping for too much don't you?

also, even though they are rivals in sports, it's much more likely that bgsu would compare itself to its ugly twin sister school kent state than it ever would to toledo's ut or tu or whatever-they-are-calling-it-this-year college.

That is one pimped out Neon!

BGSU says mess means it's building for the future

BOWLING GREEN — When students return to Bowling Green State University for the first day of classes Monday, they'll be greeted by hundreds of construction workers, heavy equipment, and fenced-off building areas.  The university is in the largest building blitz in its history — about $200 million in projects are under way.  Under construction are:

• Two residence halls — South Central and Northwest residence halls — that together add 1,300 beds at a combined cost of nearly $66 million.  They are expected to be open by fall, 2011.

• The 700-seat McDonald dining center, which will cost about $10 million and will open in the fall, 2011.  A second dining center that will replace the Commons dining hall is expected to be built and completed by early 2012.

• The Wolfe Center for the Arts, a $41 million performance and academic building for theater, music, film, digital arts, design, sound, and dance that's to be finished by fall, 2011.

• The $36 million Stroh Center, a sports complex and arena for men's and women's basketball, women's volleyball, and gymnastics that will be ready to use in July.

I was very impressed by the residence halls till I found the construction map and it reveals that they demo'd Rogers Hall to make room for the South Central Residence Hall.  That's where I lived so it has sentimental value to me.  But also kinda lame because those dorm rooms were enormous compared to nearly all other options on campus.

http://www.bgsu.edu/downloads/finance/file65484.pdf

^ oh no, really? well i guess i figured something would have to go. you are right those rooms were unusually large for college dorm rooms. too bad i am sure that attractive amenity will be lost in the new versions.

They were designed and originally used to house 4 people per room (double bunk beds).  My sister's father in law dormed there in the 60s and since they only brought clothes, a clock/radio and a lamp it wasn't that bad.

Stroh Center: Hitting the homestretch

The main court is ready to go with a giant BG Falcon logo painted right at center court.  The chairback seats around the court are installed.  The retractable bleacher seats which will surround the floor and include seating for students and the band will start being installed at the end of this month.  Rest rooms, concessions stands, locker rooms and coaches' offices are framed and work can be done to get them ready for everyday usage.

It all adds up to the construction of the Stroh Center being in the "homestretch," according to Jim Elsasser, the associate athletics director at Bowling Green State University.
