January 5, 200916 yr Woah, I'm so glad I found this thread. I love it when bridges are made totally out of concrete. It's amazing and it's almost an art form. It's awesome when you see those giant yellow forms come off and reveal beautiful concrete work. It's nice that they are designing the bridge the way they are, it looks like it's going to be gorgeous.
January 7, 200916 yr Sheesh, does I gots ta do everythang?!?! __________________ http://www.cleveland.com/brooklynsun/news/index.ssf?/base/news-0/1230741486156280.xml&coll=4 Fickle weather could delay work on Fulton bridge Thursday, January 01, 2009 By Ken Prendergast [email protected] Brooklyn Sun Journal CLEVELAND - When working on a project as large and as complicated as the Fulton Road bridge, there will be surprises and challenges. The first came when the old bridge was to be demolished in the spring of 2007. It took two attempts for explosives expert Duane Houkom Inc. of Blue Springs, Mo. to bring down the entire, 75-year-old bridge. Originally, project planners hoped to have the $50 million bridge construction project finished by June 2009. But the discovery and removal of asbestos within the old bridge's concrete pushed the completion date back to Nov. 26, 2009, said Ray Bencivengo, project engineer for the Ohio Department of Transportation. That date may be pushed back again, this time possibly to spring 2010, he said. The reason is the unseasonably cold autumn weather. Connecting the pre-cast concrete arches are steel tension cables, dubbed tendons, and grout. But those cannot be worked on in temperatures below 40 degrees. ........... September 1, 201212 yr BTW, this bridge has reopened. Quite a while ago! I'm surprised no one has posted in this thread for three years! Anyone use the bike path that winds its way down the hill? Reviews? Comments on the final product regarding bridge design? "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 1, 201212 yr The bridge itself is beautiful and I assume looks nearly as good as the old bridge did in its heyday. Based on my experience the bridge has become a memorable attraction for the zoo; every new person walks under it, stops, and stares up for a few moments with a wow-huh?! look on their face. I have to give the city props as well, because every time some lame tagger leaves his mark on the nice white painted concrete, it's gone within a few days. When the W25th bridge a half mile away gets rebuilt in the distant future I would love to see it built in the same style. The trail is nice, I've only gone up and down it a few times, but it would not look out of place in Rocky River Reservation. There is the group Friends of Big Creek that is trying to restore Big Creek to a more natural setting. They are trying to add trails essentially connecting the Zoo to Big Creek Reservation on the other side of Brookpark Rd. www.friendsofbigcreek.org
September 1, 201212 yr Thanks. I believe the county has the responsibility for maintaining this bridge. But they could not afford to replace the bridge with their own funds, so they turned the project over to ODOT to manage. Here's some info on the bridge: http://www.kokosing.biz/Company/NewsReleases/NewsRelease/tabid/228/smid/903/ArticleID/15/reftab/71/t/Ohio-Fulton-Road-Bridge-Replacement---Spring-2009/Default.aspx More.... New Fulton Road Bridge over the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo reopens Posted: 07/09/2010 By: Colin McDermott, newsnet5.com CLEVELAND - The bridge that spans over the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo reopens Friday, July 9. The City of Cleveland, the Ohio Department of Transportation, and Cuyahoga County’s Engineer’s Office completed construction on the Fulton Road Bridge. The bridge closed in October 2006 for repair, but it was cheaper for crews to replace the bridge than try to rehabilitate it. The Fulton Road Bridge initially opened in August 1932.
